Two Tunes Tuesday

in Music5 days ago

Welcome back to this week's edition of my new Two Tunes Tuesday post initiative!

This week I want to highlight a couple of tunes with a <cough> similar beat. One was originally released in 1970, and the other in 2009. I will admit, I early found out about the earlier recording because of the later, but finding music is a journey and sometimes you need to go the "long way around"...

Anyhow, the first track for this week is Trevor Dandy's "Is There Any Love". Even though I had the roundabout way of discovering this song, I was so enamored with the way the song grows and progresses over it's four-and-a-half minute runtime. My personal favorite part is the Rhodes line that shows up since that's pretty much my favorite instrument to listen to, especially when incorporated so expertly. I hope you all enjoy it as much as I do:

For our second track this week, we have "Dear God" by Monsters of Folk. I can't even remember how I discovered this super group, but it was most likely during a phase of looking for as much M. Ward music as possible. Alongside M. Ward, we have Connor Oberst known for his solo work and Bright Eyes as well as other projects, Mike Mogis also from Bright Eyes, Jim James of My Morning Jacket, and Will Johnson who has appeared in a number of successful projects (though, to be honest, I am not personally familiar with any of them).

It's clear from the start where a lot of the inspiration for this song comes, and learning the history of the beat, helps give deeper meaning to the lyrics. While "Dear God" doesn't experience the same kind of dynamic, but the same questioning longing can be felt just the same. Without further ado, "Dear God" by Monsters of Folk:

Has anyone else ever discovered an old song through a connection to a newer one? I'd love to hear about it in the comments!
