Pokemon TCG - The Solrock + Lunatone Duo Engine

in Hive Gaming6 days ago

Hi everyone. In this Pokemon TCG post, I provide an overview of the Solrock & Lunatone duo.

Solrock & Lunatone Cards

Solrock

Solrock is a tanky 110 HP Basic Fighting Pokemon with one retreat cost and Grass weakness. The Cosmic Beam attack only works when you have Lunatone on your Bench. This attack does 70 damage without any gain from Weakness or decrease in attack from resistance. Hitting for 70 damage is really good as many Basic Pokemon are 70 HP or less and with the abundance of Buddy Buddy Poffin. You can add 30 more damage if you play one copy of Premium Power Pro.

Lunatone

Lunatone is not great as an attacker but the Lunar Cycle ability provides good drawing power. If you have Solrock in play then you can use this ability. Discard one Basic Fighting Energy from your hand in order to draw 3 cards. You cannot use more than 1 Lunar Cycle ability each turn.

Drawing 3 cards is as powerful as the not so used Supporter Nemona/Cheren. Three cards is also comparable to Fezandipiti ex's Flip The Script ability which is dependent on a Knocked Out Pokemon from your side. This Lunatone is similar to Radiant Greninja from a year ago. Radiant Greninja was really popular for many decks as a draw engine where you discard 1 Energy card to draw 2 cards.

The downsides for Solrock & Lunatone is they take up 2 Bench space spots. As good as these 2 cards are, they are not for every deck. You need Fighting Energy in the deck.

Searching For Solrock & Lunatone In Decks

There is a good amount of search cards that can retrieve Solrock and Lunatone from your deck. Nest Ball is a staple card in almost every deck and Ultra Ball is fairly popular.

Fighting Gong is a new card from the recent Mega Evolution set back in September 2025. It is a very good Item card that lets you search for any Basic Fighting Pokemon or 1 Basic Fighting Energy.

There are many ways to get Solrock and Lunatone in play. Decks with Nest Ball, Ultra Ball and Fighting Gong should be fairly consistent in finding Solrock & Lunatone.

Solrock + Lunatone As Draw Engine For Gholdengo ex, Ceruledge ex and Mega Lucario ex Decks

Solrock and Lunatone serve as good support for Gholdengo ex decks, Ceruledge ex decks and Mega Lucario ex decks. Most of these decks run 2 copies of Solrock and 2 copies of Lunatone with 2 to 4 copies of Fighting Gong. There may be an odd deck variation that runs 3 copies of Solrock as Solrock is a good early game attacker.

Gholdengo ex With Solrock & Lunatone

Gholdengo ex is a draw engine by itself and a good attacker. The Make It Rain attack requires one Metal Energy but you can discard any amount of Basic Energy from hand to deal 50 damage for each Basic Energy discarded in this way.

A big attack from Gholdengo ex is related to a large hand size. Gholdengo ex and Lunatone provide really good draw power.

Ceruledge ex

Ceruledge ex's first attack is dependent on the number of Energy cards in your discard pile. This deck is fairly aggressive in drawing cards from your deck to power up Ceruledge ex. Be careful as you don't want to deck yourself out.

Solrock can serve as an alternate attacker. Lunatone has a dual purpose in a Ceruledge ex deck. It discards Fighting Energy from hand to draw 3 cards. This deck usually has 3 to 4 copies of Carmine and Professor's Research to draw cards fast.

Mega Lucario ex Deck

The previous 2 decks are top tier decks that don't really feature Fighting Pokemon attackers. Mega Lucario ex with Solrock, Lunatone and Hariyama are all Fighting types in this deck.

Solrock and Lunatone provide a draw engine for Mega Lucario ex decks. Fighting Energy in the discard helps with Mega Lucario ex's first attack. This first attack allows you to attach up to 3 Basic Fighting Energy from the discard pile to your Benched Pokemon. Mega Lucario ex decks also run 3 to 4 copies of Premium Power Pro for more damage if needed.

Mega Lucario ex is an okay deck but it is gatekept by many Gardevoir ex decks.

Other Possible Decks with Solrock & Lunatone

There are other possible decks that benefit from the Solrock & Lunatone combo. Right now I am testing this duo with Raging Bolt ex and Professor Sada's Vitality. Solrock serves as a good alternate attacker.

A lesser known archetype is a rogue deck that features Bloodmoon Ursaluna with the Solrock and Lunatone engine. It looks okay and the cards are affordable. I cannot comment much on if it's top tier or not.
