May 23, I visited the exhibition “Yayoi Kusama: World of Prints - Repetition and Proliferation” at the Kyoto Kyocera Museum of Art and wrote about my impressions.
Yayoi Kusama was born in Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture, in 1929, and even now, at the age of 96, she continues to create vigorously. That alone is impressive, but I have seen two exhibitions of Yayoi Kusama's work, and once again, it was an amazing display.
I particularly liked the series of flowers and the fish works. As for the flowers, Yayoi's family had a large seed farm, so she spent all day drawing flowers with her sketchbook. There was a time when I also went to the Kyoto Botanical Garden to sketch flowers and tried to remember the names of flowers, but now I cannot draw them anymore. The power of Yayoi Kusama's works, not limited to flowers, is not limited to flowers, but lies in the explosive force with which she creates her works.
Her fish works, especially “Tatsu no Otoshishigo” and “Sea,” are beautiful with their colors that stand out against the dark background.
Other works include a lemon squash filled with polka dots, shoes, and, above all, pumpkins. More than a dozen pumpkin works were displayed in one room. These works of art show that pumpkins come in all shapes and sizes. Some are long, some are slightly bent, and no two pumpkins are alike. No two pumpkins are alike.
In terms of prints, Yayoi Kusama uses a wide variety of printmaking techniques, including woodblock prints, etchings, lithographs, and silkscreens. In particular, she collaborated with a woodblock printer to create a seven-color print of Mount Fuji, which was bright and poppy.
Seeing Yayoi Kusama's works made me realize that I must continue to work hard on my artwork.

5/23に京都市京セラ美術館で「草間彌生 版画の世界―反復と増殖―」展を鑑賞してきたので感想を書く。
草間彌生は1929年長野県松本市生まれであり、96歳になる現在でも精力的に創作活動を続けているという。それだけでもすごいのに、私は今まで２回草間彌生の展覧会を鑑賞しているが、またしてもすごい展示だった。
特に私が気にいったのは、一連の花の作品と魚の作品である。花については、生家が広大な採種場を持っていたので、スケッチブックを持って１日中花を描きまくっていたそうで、花の名前もずいぶん覚えていたようだ。私も一時期京都府立植物園に行って花をスケッチしていた時期があるし、花の名前も覚えようとしたが、今では描けなくなった。花に限らず、草間彌生の作品のパワーが桁違いなのは作品を創出するその爆発力にあると思う。
魚の作品、特に「たつのおとしご」や「海」は、暗い背景に浮かび上がる色使いが美しい。
その他、水玉でいっぱいのレモンスカッシュや靴、そして何と言っても南瓜である。一室使って十数点の南瓜の作品が飾られていた。これらの作品は南瓜にも色々あることを表している。縦長だったり、少し曲がっていたり。同じ南瓜はない。
版画ということで言えば、草間彌生は木版、エッチング、リトグラフ、シルクスクリーンなど多種多様な技法で版画作品を創っている。特に木版の摺師と共同で七色の富士山の作品を創っており、それがまた明るくてポップであった。
私も草間彌生の作品たちを見て、これからも絵の制作を頑張らねばいけないなと思った。
