A while ago, to celebrate the global release of the new Pokémon game, the official Pokémon team held a huge themed event. It was another limited-time special event. Honestly, I’m not very familiar with Pokémon myself, but my friend’s elementary school son is absolutely obsessed with it. All the kids around his age think Pokémon is super cool and super cute. His favorite Pokémon is the super-popular Pikachu, because it can shoot electricity, which he thinks is super strong. Some of my other friends also play the Pokémon card game and enjoy it so much that they basically never get tired of it. It’s clear that Pokémon’s charm really appeals to all ages, so I figured this event would definitely be packed.
And sure enough, when I arrived, I could hear kids laughing and cheering from far away. Lots of parents had brought their children to check out the event. The six-meter-tall giant Pikachu statue was definitely the main photo spot. Trying to find a moment when no one was taking pictures there was basically impossible. I also heard that at night, the lighting effects make it look even cooler. Besides that, there were other photo areas where fans could take pictures with life-size Pokémon standees.
The most popular attraction was the game demo area, where players could try out Pokémon Legends: Z-A. Luckily, when I lined up, the crowd wasn’t too big yet, so I got to try the game. It was actually pretty fun! But since so many people were waiting behind me, I didn’t want to take up too much time. I only played for a few minutes before letting the next person try. After the demo, you could also get a Pokémon paper sun visor. But, uh… given my age, I figured walking around wearing a paper visor might look a bit silly, so I chose not to take one.
Because the event was called a “Night Market Festival”, there were also lots of night-market-style games, like mini basketball shooting, a tic-tac-toe toss, ring toss, and so on. Each time you completed a game, you’d get a stamp, and collecting three stamps let you redeem a special souvenir. The line of fans waiting to collect stamps was so long that the whole area was completely packed. There were also Pikachu mascots wandering around, interacting with fans and taking photos. I realized that there were way more kids than adults, and the moment children saw so many Pokémon characters, they practically went crazy—jumping, screaming, yelling “Pikachu!” at the top of their lungs. You could really feel just how powerful the Pokémon craze still is.
