I admit it, I am arriving late to using earbuds. It appears EVERYBODY is using them nowadays, but I refrained from trying them because of hearing concerns. You see, there are hearing health issues in my family, and as a dentist, I am exposed to constant sound contamination at work. On top of that, I am quite sensitive to sounds to the point of avoiding loud parties and concerts, or playing videogames at a quite low volume. Even piano practices were held without using sound-enhancing pedals unless necessary. So yeah, this represents a little issue for me, and introducing anything new in that department, I do it with caution. That being said, let me talk about my experience with these little black beans.

Lo admito, llego tarde a usar auriculares. Parece que TODO EL MUNDO los usa hoy en día, pero me abstuve de probarlos por problemas de audición. Verán, en mi familia hay problemas de audición y, como dentista, estoy expuesto a una contaminación acústica constante en el trabajo. Además, soy bastante sensible a los ruidos, hasta el punto de evitar fiestas y conciertos ruidosos, o jugar videojuegos a un volumen muy bajo. Incluso los ensayos de piano se hacían sin usar pedales de amplificación de sonido a menos que fuera necesario. Así que sí, esto representa un pequeño problema para mí, y al introducir cualquier novedad en ese sentido, lo hago con precaución. Dicho esto, permítanme hablarles de mi experiencia con estos pequeños frijoles negros.

Package Content & Instructions

The package comes with the charging case and buds, three sizes of tips, and the instruction manual. The charger case features a USB-C connection. Each bud is identified with Left and Right Lettercases. The instructions manual is overly simple, as the device itself is. It explains, almost in "Razor" language, how to activate them for broadcasting the Bluetooth signal, how to charge the case, and the most interesting feature: how to control reproduction using the earbuds' tactile surface.

Explica, casi en lenguaje de "Razor", cómo activarlos para transmitir la señal Bluetooth, cómo cargar el estuche y, lo más interesante, cómo controlar la reproducción mediante la superficie táctil de los auriculares.

When I saw how thick these buds actually were, I started to feel some regret and worried they might not fit well in my ears. As usual, different tip sizes came with the buds, and I tried each one to find the best fit possible.

Cuando vi lo gruesos que eran estos auriculares, empecé a arrepentirme y me preocupé de que no me quedaran bien en los oídos. Como siempre, los auriculares venían con diferentes tamaños de punta, y las probé todas para encontrar la que mejor se ajustara.

The charging case has only one LED light to indicate it is connected. This light also turns on when the case is opened and closed. However, there is no indicator of the case or the earbuds' respective batteries. To assess this, one must use the phone's app while the earbuds are connected or enter the Bluetooth menu on the computer to see an actual battery percentage. Aside from this, the buds signal low battery with a repetitive sound, and they can last around five to ten minutes more after this.

El estuche de carga solo tiene una luz LED para indicar que está conectado. Esta luz también se enciende al abrir y cerrar el estuche. Sin embargo, no hay indicador de batería del estuche ni de los auriculares. Para comprobarlo, hay que usar la aplicación del teléfono con los auriculares conectados o acceder al menú de Bluetooth del ordenador para ver el porcentaje de batería. Además, los auriculares avisan de batería baja con un sonido repetitivo, y pueden durar entre cinco y diez minutos más después de esto.

User Experience

After understanding how the device works, it was time to try it out. First, I adjusted each tip size to find the best fit. Almost immediately, my ears started rejecting the buds, and they would fall off seconds or minutes after placing them in. No tip size was good enough, and the biggest were the ones that ensured a little better grip and permanence on my ears. No matter what I did, though, they would just fall off!!

I forced myself to keep them in my ears for a couple of hours, only to end up with some pain. I kept trying to use them the following day, and it was the same result; the pain persisted. On top of that, constant adjustments were necessary to ensure they were in place; a situation that also led to constant "pause" and "play" of whatever I was listening to or watching at the moment. Thus, the experience was not pleasant at all.

Después de entender cómo funciona el dispositivo, llegó el momento de probarlo. Primero, ajusté cada tamaño de almohadilla para encontrar el que mejor se ajustara. Casi de inmediato, mis oídos empezaron a rechazar los auriculares y se caían segundos o minutos después de colocármelos. Ningún tamaño de almohadilla era lo suficientemente bueno, y los más grandes eran los que aseguraban un mejor agarre y permanencia en mis oídos. Sin embargo, hiciera lo que hiciera, ¡simplemente se caían! Me obligué a mantenerlos puestos durante un par de horas, solo para terminar con algo de dolor.

Seguí intentándolos al día siguiente, y el resultado fue el mismo: el dolor persistía. Además, era necesario ajustarlos constantemente para asegurarme de que estuvieran en su lugar; una situación que también me obligaba a pausar y reproducir constantemente lo que estuviera escuchando o viendo. Por lo tanto, la experiencia no fue nada agradable.

I was finally thinking about giving them away to my family when I tried this little hack. The ejection of the buds is mainly because they don't fit properly inside my ears, but I discovered that I could use them without inserting the tips. All I had to do was place the tip at the entrance of my ear canal and support the body against the antihelix (ear's internal curve). That way, they feel increasingly more supported, and they didn't fall off! Yes, I don't enjoy the noise cancellation completely using this method, but at least I can continue using the earbuds.

The recommendation out of this experience would be to always buy the "active" versions of earbuds. Those come with a stabilizing stick, which is supposed to grant better anchoring for doing exercise and sports. Another option is to buy buds without that tedious tip, which is somewhat like old earphones that will reach only the entrance of your middle ear canal. These options combined do exist, and it will surely be my next pick for earbuds.

In terms of sound and battery duration, these were great. Xiaomi claims they last up to 7.5 hours, but in my experience, that is actually around 5 hours. Sound capacity was good enough for me, but again, I do have hearing sensitivity, so I don't overdo it with volume.

Finalmente estaba pensando en regalárselos a mi familia cuando probé este pequeño truco. La expulsión de los auriculares se debe principalmente a que no encajan bien en mis oídos, pero descubrí que podía usarlos sin necesidad de insertar las almohadillas. Solo tenía que colocar la almohadilla en la entrada del canal auditivo y apoyar el cuerpo contra el antihélix (la curva interna del oído). Así, se sentían cada vez más sujetos y no se caían. Sí, no disfruto del todo de la cancelación de ruido con este método, pero al menos puedo seguir usando los auriculares.

La recomendación tras esta experiencia sería comprar siempre las versiones "activas" de los auriculares. Estas vienen con un estabilizador, que supuestamente proporciona un mejor anclaje para hacer ejercicio y deportes. Otra opción es comprar auriculares sin esa molesta almohadilla, que es como los auriculares antiguos que solo llegan a la entrada del canal auditivo medio. Estas opciones combinadas existen, y sin duda serán mi próxima elección de auriculares.

En cuanto a sonido y duración de la batería, estos fueron geniales. Xiaomi afirma que duran hasta 7,5 horas, pero en mi experiencia, en realidad son unas 5 horas. La capacidad de sonido me pareció suficiente, pero, como tengo sensibilidad auditiva, no exagero con el volumen.
