When I was in primary school, I used to sell milky sweet and coffee sweet to my classmates. It was just something I started for fun at first, but later it became a small business for me, and before I knew it, I was saving some money from it. It felt good to make my own money, even though it was little and I didn't even see it as anything but it teach me how to save as a little child.
Fast forward to when I got to higher institution, I wasn’t really involved in any major hustle. I am a shy person and I don’t like marketing or advertising things, so doing businesses that needed me to talk to people or promote something, I won't do it. But one thing I was good at was collecting contributions online. I used to organize small online contributions among friends and classmates, and I earned a little from it. It wasn’t much, but it gave me money to buy data, and sometimes snacks or little things I needed, I don't know if I should call it side hustle too but it earn me little.
I didn’t see it as a big deal then, but now I realize that it was also a side hustle in its own way because it required trust and responsibility. People had to trust me with their money, and I never disappointed them. It taught me how to be accountable and organized. Handling other people’s money isn’t easy, and I learned that honesty keeps you in business. Up till now many of my classmates are still trusting me with their money even after we leave school, we are still doing the contribution together.
In my final year, I got another chance to make some money. Some of my classmates were having trouble with their projects, especially with things like writing questionnaires and compiling data. Since I was good at that, I helped them, and they paid me something small in return. That period made me realize that even our knowledge and skills can be used to earn money. You don’t always need to sell a product; sometimes, what you know is valuable too.
Even though I didn’t have any big hustle or business while in school, I’m proud of those small things I did. Each of them taught me lessons that are still useful today the importance of honesty, saving, helping others, and using your little skills wisely.
I also learned that it’s not about how big the hustle is but about the little efforts that teach us responsibility and independence. I may not have done many side hustles while in school, but the few I did I learned responsibility , accountability, honesty and trust.
