To deepen their understanding of cinematography, students of the Communication Studies Program at Malikussaleh University held a group screening of their own short films. The event took place in the auditorium of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (Fisipol) at the Bukit Indah Campus in Lhokseumawe on Wednesday (July 16, 2025).
The film screening was part of the Cinematography course taught by three Communication Studies lecturers: Cindenia Puspasari, M.Soc, Sc; Muchlis, MSos; and Sarrah Kurnia F, MIKom. Guest lecturer Dr. Muhammad Fazil also attended the event, who provided critiques and appreciation for the students' work.
Course coordinator, Cindenia Puspasari, stated that this activity was a concrete manifestation of the Graduate Learning Outcomes (CPL) in the course.
"The focus of learning in this course is on the production of visual works. Through this activity, students not only learn theory but also hone their creativity in conveying ideas through the language of images," she said.
She also added that the success of this activity is the result of collaboration between the lecturer and sixth-semester students taking the Cinematography course.
Meanwhile, Dr. Muhammad Fazil assessed this activity as crucial in fostering a creative spirit among students.
"Film screenings like this provide a much-needed space for appreciation for young filmmakers. In addition to fostering motivation, students' works also reflect a concern for local cultural issues amidst the overwhelming influence of foreign cultures," he said.
A total of 10 short films were screened at this activity. Some of these include Ektrovert Maksa, a horror comedy; Bayang Luka, which explores the realities of poverty experienced by students; Jalan Pintas, which tells the story of a student who manipulates a scholarship for a luxurious lifestyle; and Salah Tiga, a romantic comedy.
The average film is around 15 minutes long and presents a variety of themes and directing styles that demonstrate the potential and creativity of Malikussaleh University Communication Science students in the field of film.[]
