Over the last decade, there has been an explosion of the use of personality tests in recruiting, where applicants fill out online forms and are filtered based on their results. Prior to this, for key positions at least, there were testing companies with trained psychologists interviewing and evaluating results. The reason that most have made the change is of course the cost of having trained people do the testing, but more than that, it is another way to whittle down the pool without having to do much, even if the testing itself is inaccurate, or unvalidated.
Anything to save money.

A "cult of personality" is a situation where a public figure, often a political leader, is glorified through propaganda to appear heroic and admirable, leading to uncritical flattery and unwavering devotion. This is achieved through methods like mass media, art, and rallies to create an idealized and heroic image of the leader. While the term can sometimes be used for celebrities, it most frequently applies to autocratic leaders to reinforce their power and legitimize their rule.
(AI search overview)
While once the domain of public figures, in the last twenty years social media has turned us all into personalities that are encouraged to curate our content in order to build our personal brand. Eight billion cults of personality, driven by the algorithms to fight for space, to be heard, to make an impact, to get attention. And just like the methodology used for supreme leaders, reality doesn't have to play a part in the process, just perception.
Not too long ago, within my memory at least, in order for a public figure to be celebrated, they had to do something worth celebrating. This is how they became a celebrity - someone who is celebrated. Their fame came through achievement and accomplishment, whether that be in business, on the screen, or on a sports field. They had to improve themselves to the point they were able to prove themselves to an audience, who would then celebrate their accomplishments.
That isn't the case today, where "celebrity" is purely about being known, and being known needn't require having done anything worth celebrating at all. The majority of online influencers who earn a living from having followers, don't do anything special, don't have any special talents, haven't done much to improve themselves in comparison to others. They have just played into the hands of the algorithms, and been chosen to be amplified, largely for some gimmick, not an achievement.
And similarly to the "nonsense" personality tests used in the workplace, the audience are using this curated view of personality, driven by the algorithms, to select their candidates of influence. But unlike being influenced by accomplishment, the audience is being influenced by a largely engineered and false view of a personality, that has accomplished very little.
I have written a lot about role models in the past and what many of us are doing now are choosing our role models based on that personality test of "celebrity", even though other than possible fame and fortune, looks and body type, there is nothing practical to follow. We are following dead ends that don't improve us, which means we do not have any way to prove ourselves in the world. We measure ourselves against people who have curated and engineered their cult, without acknowledging that the test is inaccurate and irrelevant to becoming the kind of person we want to be - in reality.
In reality, our personality is influenced by what we do, not who we believe ourselves to be. Someone with the propensity to anger easily who has mastered emotional management, doesn't have an angry personality. Their personality is evidenced, proven, in their behaviour, remaining calm under pressure or insult, thinking through reactions slowly when they are emotionally triggered, and acting based on thoughtful deliberation of the situation. A potentially very violent person, can be the sweetest, kindest, most thoughtful personality.
As I see it, since we are social animals that can learn from others, we should surround ourselves with people who are able to inspire and support us to be the best version of ourselves. The "best version" is difficult to define, but I think we should consider the kind of person we want to be and then go about acting as that person. There is no point in waiting until stars align, we can be that person now. Or at least, we can start shifting to become that person, by doing the things that kind of person does. We might not be great at those things, but as we do them more, we improve ourselves and move continuously toward that unattainable best version of ourselves.
improvement(n.)
mid-15c., enprowment "profitable use, management of something for profit," from Anglo-French emprowement, from emprouwer "turn to profit" (see improve). Meaning "betterment; act of making better, amelioration" is from 1640s. Meaning "production of something better, something better (than something else)" is from 1712. Meaning "buildings, etc. on a piece of property" is from 1773. Related: Improvements.
"Improve" is "for profit" in the sense of adding value. The process of self-improvement is about adding value to ourselves. But from an economic standpoint, value requires demand, which also requires some attachment to reality and the ability to prove the product. And similarly to the way the financial economics is working today, there is very little attachment between the valuation, and the product provided. A company can make an immense amount in stock valuation, and provide nothing of value to society. Similarly, most online influencers who have created their mini cult of personality around themselves, do not offer anything of value to the audience, other than a point to waste a little bit more time, and avoid self-improvement.
As humans, we are constantly running our own personality tests on the people we interact with, filtering them on what we experience. But with so much of our "experience" driven into a world of digital illusion, our natural testing mechanisms are no longer calibrated and can be incredibly inaccurate, especially when what we are feeding are our desires. When we really want something to be true, we will believe anything.
Like a cult member.
We should be far more discerning with the people and content we surround ourselves with, ensuring that the majority of what influences us is leading us toward where we want to go, even if it doesn't always feel good to consume. Yet, most of us curate our own experience with what makes us feel good right now, even if it is leading us away, or holding us back from reaching toward the best version of ourselves. The one that is constantly improving and acting as the kind of person we want to be.
Next time you are scrolling, take note.
If it doesn't inspire and support you to make practical changes to improve yourself to be the kind of person you want to be, it isn't helping you.

I fear I would never make it to the interview phase if things were solely based on a personality test. I have a really hard time separating my work personality from my home personality. I have never really been able to find a way to mix the two.
I am much the same, as I am "me" wherever I am . I tend not to adjust my behaviour too much in the workplace, much to the chagrin of some, but the benefit of many :)
I like consuming content that has opposing views, for example Fox News and CNN and perspectives of both Russian "news" and Ukrainian, etc...
I don't know if consuming that kind of content makes me better, but I do feel that it gives me a more complete picture.
Does having the complete picture change anything for you?
I believe it helps me understand our world a bit better... nothing is black and white...
Back when I was a librarian, at least ore-COVID, we had annual district meetings with some kind of presentation as the main focus. One of the few good ones I recall was a personality type quiz, but the focus was on learning how to work together when personalities conflict, playing to the strengths of yourself and your team, and recognizing pressure points before anything flares up. There was also discussion of how some attributes may be hard-wored, but others are circumstantial and changing. Definitely an outlier, but "I'm a circle" makes a lot more sense than, "I'm INFP" or whatever other type test says.
Talking with a friend today about it, he said the same 8and I agree). These tests can't work in a vacuum, but they can be used as conversation, interaction starters that help people communicate more effectively.
In today's world of digital illusions, many people tend to idolize people who often don't have significant success, which makes us wonder about what we really value in our society.
I get the sense that if anything is to change positively in the world, it is going to take a revaluation of what "real value" is. Then, adjust the incentives accordingly.
Not taking notes, sorry. I took them a long time ago, and reading through your posts is mostly a reminder of sticking to the prior life teachings I adopted (or had to adopt 😅). Which is pretty useful, too, thank you.
I just wrote about something like that this morning. An improvement on myself that I decided. I was a bit uncalibrated myself in my habits, and want to get back to before. That, too, happens a lot. Every little step in a wrong direction by itself is little, but it makes the next little step more likely, and suddenly it's many of them. That works both ways. Going to step back in the right direction.
And I think that if all you get from it is a reminder occasionally to be a little aware and get back on track, then all is good! It is far easier to take the steps in the wrong direction, than in the right.
It is important to me to be reminded to stay vigilant about myself - that's what I wanted to express. Not at all belittling your post, still between my favorites on hive :-)
Few days ago I saw this on youtube. I am shocked. Not so much by how much those young people claim to have. But how willing they are to reveal that. In the past I read maybe your post(?) that some people dislike Hive because here wallets are visible to everyone. But it seems that those people would not have that problem(unless they were lying of course...)
Also I feel sad for the guy who claimed that he inherited 200k but had to pay 60k in tax. That seems like legal robbery/ scam to me.Young people are more comfortable talking about money than older, as they don't carry the same kinds of issues. However, they are also more comfortable lying about it too. And also, they are more likely not to own anything else of value, so "savings" are not a very good indicator, especially as many are still living off their parents :)
It is 35% here, so he would have got 130.
I also saw a comment in that video- they are mistaking savings and credit.😛
:D
Our inward personality, maybe.
Fact still remains that people will often judge based off perception. My Parents knew a Pastor who was highly revered on the Pulpit, but was nothing like his persona behind closed doors. Truthfully, I don't think his followers cared. They judged based off what they saw on the altar and it was enough to them.
Personality is who we are when we are alone.
It's about incentivizing the right the behaviour...
But when we are making our own decisions on what we consume, and what we consume influences us, who is it up to?
Community
Being close to people who inspire us to be the best version of ourselves is a good idea, though in the society today, such people are unfortunately rare and some of them don't have the time for mentorship or to make acquaintances. I have found that I can be closer to people who motivate me to excellence without being physically with them. I achieve that by following their social media pages, watching their videos, reading their books, listening to their podcasts, etc. Otherwise every other person I meet in real life does little to inspire me to excellence.
Why not be that person? Live an inspiring life, be an inspiring person, smile, laugh, and help others. It will raise more.
Real growth, in my opinion, starts when you stop defending your idea of who you are and start observing what you actually do. It s funny how easy it is to see flaws in others and completely miss them in ourselves. Plus, how easy it is to get stuck in that “self-improvement” bubble online, convincing ourselves we are changing just because we are consuming positive stuff. But genuine growth is something else.
Yep. Most of what we do, is not what we want to do! :D
You can't passively consume to improvement.
Yes, you're right. I agree with you that many influencers often get fame without real achievement. Just like they are chasing empty celebrity status all over online.
I love the point that you made, acting like the person you want to be, in order to shape your personality. And when you surround yourself to people or content that makes you to grow and reveal the best part of you,
it makes you feel good.
The thing with surrounding ourselves with people who can help us grow, is that it is uncomfortable and takes effort, and is a reminder that we have to do more. Most people want to do less in life.
I think i am KHLMXQ10VX personality type.. :P I wud most likely fail any online test, unless they are looking for a bipolar, slightly wacko type person..
Doesn't everyone have some mental disorder now?
true. 😉
Social media has turned into a mini cults of personality. People are just chasing likes, followers instead of giving out real value. We should choose a role model that can inspire us and make us act better. It's not just to look good online or to look flashy or expensive.
We really have to put on check the things weconsume things on social media
and focus on things that help us grow.
Although it's not easy to leave the entertainment aspect of it.
Or be our own role model and live the life of the kind of person we want to be.
It's quite surprising now, social media have pushed us to check fake personas instead of engaging in real growth, I think we should pick a role model who inspires us and not just entertain us. The idea that our action share personality hits very hard. And when we are willing to do better, it makes us to feel better.
I'm going to think twice about who I would love to follow online. Instead of just play entertainments, we are supposed to follow someone that we grow with.
So thank you for the reminder to stay guided on self-improvement.
Or become that person who we want to be, rather than looking for someone else to fill the role for us.
in reality our personality is influenced by what we do that’s such a timeless truth..
