Hello Hive
Happy new month to my HiveDIY community. I hope that the new month meets us well and that we are enjoying some peace and tranquility.
My story is like that of one lady that never wears a skirt all her days. Ever since the African culture and our parents eventually permitted the girl child to wear trousers, otherwise called pants in this part of the world, I lost count of when I last bought a skirt or even wore one.
It has always been a taboo for females to wear trousers here, saying that it is a Western culture and that the scripture forbids a woman to wear a male's clothes and vice versa.
Can we really categorize what form ladies' wear or male wear should be like? If we truly wish to obey that part of the scripture to the letter.
Well, personally, I can't say, but I often wear most clothes for comfort, and other times they serve me a specific purpose. Ans right now I need some skirt to serve me purpose
I love wearing trousers because they protect my legs from the cold, and most times I look much smarter in them than when I wear skirts. You surely need a good body shape to wear a skirt, contrary to my palazzo pants that fit me so well to cover some physique.
Recently I have admired how even a skirt can be sewn really smartly andautifully, besideswe often need to wear skirts now for church activities.
Some churches here still uphold an unacceptance of ladies wearing trousers/pants to church; hence, our uniforms comprise smart skirts and jackets.
Since I do not have any of the needed smart skirts, not even in any color, I decided to try my creativity at sewing some for myself according to how much fabric I am able to get my hands on. I'm so happy that I got the sewing skills, and as long as I can lay my hands on fabrics, I get to see some quality clothes for myself, my family and friends, and some clients who chose to patronize me.
I got this half meter of black fabric and decided to see if it can sew me a skirt.
I folded the fabric into 4, hoping to cut the front and back blocks of the fabric at the same time. It's my first time trying this cut-together method.
After taking out my measurements of waist, hip, and full lengths, plus the zipper allowance, I proceeded to cut the fabric here.
You need to see the confusion I encountered and almost slashed the front block, which is not meant to be so.
It's good to practice new methods, and while doing so, I learned a few things. Here are the front and back blocks.
Next I cut the waistband to 3" and then added hairstay to it using the steam iron.
Next, I have only tiny pieces of the fabric left, which I decided to maximally utilize for the design of the skirt.
Should I make a flair?
Or an overlap on the skirt
The challenge is that there isn't much fabric. I would have played along with it to create all the ideas flooding my head, but the height of creativity now would be how well I can manage the fabric to make me a nice design.
I kept wondering, then went ahead to cut the linings for the skirt and continued sewing.
Having stitched the necessary parts of the front and back with the band, I decided to work on the tiny fabric piece left, and here is what I came up with m the skirt eventually.

In the end I have a beautiful and functional skirt, and because I was conscious of the process, I ended up sewing a smart skirt for me contrary to the thought I had nursed that skirts don't fit me like pants, maybe because I haven't seen some quality ones before.

I'm also a trouser lady 😅 I easily get bruised when walking due to friction when I put In just a skirt, so I prefer comfort always, thankfully my church accepts wearing of trousers, still, a good skirt is needed like this one you made right here is so beautiful and can't be looked past.
It looks so charming and beautiful. It is fashionable and elegant. A dress says a lot about your and your personality. Nice work! Thanks!
