Los desafíos del pelo rizo (Es-En)

La iniciativa de @charjaim me ha permitido reflexionar con ustedes sobre cómo las personas a nuestro alrededor a veces nos presionan para Encajar en sociedad desde la apariencia personal.

El pelo rizo, rizado o afro es tendencia en el mundo. La industria de la belleza ha encontrado un nicho importante y periódicamente sale al mercado un nuevo producto para hidratar, definir, o cuantos fines decidan que son necesarios.

Las pasarelas también identificaron un espacio bajo los códigos de la inclusividad para personas con texturas de pelo y colores de piel que antes encontraban cerradas las puertas de las principales casas de la moda.

Durante décadas no fue así. Los estándares de lo estéticamente aceptado eran rígidos e imponían parámetros, entre los cuales resaltaba un cabello liso, sedoso, brillante como el único legítimo.

Por eso no fue casual, ni solo en determinados países, que a las niñas de pelos no lacios se les aplicaran cremas y técnicas –en muchos casos dolorosas- para lograr “encajar” en esos patrones que se generalizaban por las películas, los videos clips y las revistas.

Y ahí llegué yo y casi todas las muchachas de mi familia. Durante los primeros años de vida lucíamos trenzas y peinados tensados con ligas y cintas para dominar el cabello con que nos dotó la naturaleza.
En la adolescencia era un mandato sucumbir a los procesos de alisamientos, máxime cuando se acercaban las fotos tradicionales de celebración de los 15 años. Mirando en retrospectiva esas imágenes mías puedo asegurar que lucía más mayor que en los años siguientes cuando cambié mi peinado.

Quienes decidimos en determinado momento de nuestras vidas renunciar a la tiranía del pelo laciado, llegamos por caminos y razones diversas y muy personales; pero reconozco que en un gesto tan individual –y para algunos solo estético- encontramos un acto de libertad y hasta de rebeldía.
Insisto en que décadas atrás no existían productos como hoy día para cuidar el pelo afro, tampoco información sobre cómo peinarlo y de las diferentes maneras de lucirlo, incluso que resulte funcional el peinado en determinadas labores.

Para un reportaje periodístico conté con el testimonio de la amiga @iriswrite y su sobrina Lisy. Ambas pasaron el proceso de alisados, hasta terminar en su pelo natural. Lisy, luego de superar muchos procesos de autoestima, porque la sociedad juzgaba su abundante pelo rizo, se ha convertido en una experta defensora y peinadora de este tipo de cabello.

Mientras tuve el pelo alisado fui cada semana a la peluquería y dediqué más tiempo del que me gustaba disponer para ello a conservar un peinado "lacio". Cada noche debía colocar rolos (o rulos) para conservar el molde al día siguiente. Fue en la Universidad cuando decidí dejarme mis rizos.
Al llegar a residir a Las Tunas, época en que había decidido llevar mi cabello de forma natural, algunas mujeres de mi entorno de trabajo, solían preguntarme: "¿Y por qué no te arreglas el pelo?". Yo respondía que lo tenía arreglado para mi gusto. Y me replicaban: "No, no. ¿Por qué no te lo desrizas, y te das un color claro...?". Parecía una exigencia para “encajar” en mi nuevo entorno.

También soporté invariablemente la insistencia de las peluqueras, y de otras clientas asombradas, instándome a aplicar productos para alisar mi pelo. Era una manera de ejercer presión social. Y a cada una respondía, sin opción para la réplica: "A mí me gusta así".
Enfrentarse a esos esquemas dependía, sobre todo, de la valentía para andar por la vida o la aceptación que cada persona tenga de sí misma. Mire, usted, todo esto solo por tener un pelo "diferente" a los ojos de los estándares y la moda.

Mis hijas nacieron con el pelo rizado. Pertenecen a la denominada Generación Z, y este detalle significa, por ejemplo, que tienen formas de pensar, acceso a la información y hasta disponibilidad de productos, ajenos totalmente al siglo pasado. Pero, sobre todo los y las jóvenes de hoy suelen llevar la apariencia física más alejada de esquemas.
De cualquier modo, ellas eligieron individualmente cómo lucir su cabello: una lo tiene natural y la otra decidió mostrarlo lacio. Mientras les guste de esa forma, afirman.

The challenges of curly hair

Greetings, @holos-lotus community.

@charjaim's initiative has allowed me to reflect with you on how the people around us sometimes pressure us to Fit into society based on our personal appearance.

Curly, coiled, or afro hair is trending in the world. The beauty industry has found an important niche and periodically a new product hits the market to moisturize, define, or for whatever purposes they decide are necessary.

Fashion runways have also identified a space under the codes of inclusivity for people with hair textures and skin colors who previously found the doors of major fashion houses closed.

For decades, this was not the case. The standards of what was aesthetically acceptable were rigid and imposed parameters, among which straight, silky, shiny hair stood out as the only legitimate one.

That's why it was not coincidental, nor limited to certain countries, that girls with non-straight hair had creams and techniques applied – often painful ones – to make them "fit" into those patterns that were generalized through movies, music videos, and magazines.

And that's where I came in, and almost all the girls in my family. During the first years of life, we wore braids and hairstyles tightly pulled with elastics and ribbons to tame the hair with which nature endowed us.
In adolescence,succumbing to straightening processes was a mandate, especially when the traditional 15th birthday celebration photos were approaching. Looking back at those images of myself, I can assure you that I looked older than in the following years when I changed my hairstyle.

Those of us who decided at a certain point in our lives to renounce the tyranny of straight hair arrived at that decision through diverse and very personal paths and reasons; but I recognize that in such an individual gesture –and for some, merely aesthetic– we find an act of freedom and even rebellion.
I insist that decades ago,products like those today for caring for afro hair did not exist, nor was there information on how to style it and the different ways to wear it, even making the hairstyle functional for certain jobs.

For a journalistic report, I had the testimony of my friend @iriswrite and her niece Lisy. Both went through the process of straightening, until they ended up with their natural hair. Lisy, after overcoming many self-esteem processes, because society judged her abundant curly hair, has become an expert defender and stylist of this type of hair.

While I had my hair straightened, I went to the hair salon every week and dedicated more time than I would have liked to spend on maintaining a "straight" hairstyle. Every night I had to put in rollers to preserve the set for the next day. It was at University when I decided to let my curls be.
When I moved to live in Las Tunas,a time when I had decided to wear my hair naturally, some women in my work environment used to ask me: "And why don't you fix your hair?". I would respond that it was fixed to my liking. And they would retort: "No, no. Why don't you straighten it, and give it a light color...?". It seemed like a requirement to "fit in" to my new environment.

I also invariably had to endure the insistence of hairdressers, and other surprised clients, urging me to apply products to straighten my hair. It was a way of exerting social pressure. And to each one I responded, with no option for a reply: "I like it this way".
Confronting those schemes depended,above all, on the courage to go through life or the acceptance that each person has of themselves. Look at all this, just for having hair "different" in the eyes of standards and fashion.

My daughters were born with curly hair. They belong to the so-called Generation Z, and this detail means, for example, that they have ways of thinking, access to information, and even availability of products, totally foreign to the last century. But, above all, today's youth tend to keep their physical appearance further away from set schemes.
In any case,they individually chose how to wear their hair: one has it natural and the other decided to wear it straight. As long as they like it that way, they affirm.
