Cine con Instintos

Hola amigos, espero que estén teniendo un lindo día, no quería perder la oportunidad de participar en la iniciativa propuesta por @damarysvibra bajo el título Reconectar con los Instintos. Les propongo analizar el tema desde mis experiencias personales pero tomando como hilo conductor y como reflejo de instintos distintos materiales audiovisuales que han marcado época, traté de hacer la selección lo más reconocible posible.

La sociedad, la ética y la cultura nos ha permitido domesticar nuestros instintos y adaptarlos a la vida en sociedad, pero ¿qué pasa cuando relegar instintos nos aleja de nuestra esencia? ¿Bajo qué condiciones estos instintos pueden salir a flote y mostrarnos lo que ocultamos? El cine es espejo de nuestra condición y tiene la capacidad de ponernos en esas situaciones extremas a través de la pantalla, surgiendo en nosotros la identificación necesaria con los actores como para preguntarnos ¿Qué hubiésemos hecho nosotros? Tomémonos un segundo para pensar cuántas tramas se rigen desde el detonante de dejar fluir un instinto primario, ya sea bueno o malo o simplemente distinto. Los instintos siempre están ahí, solo están ocultos.

Acompáñame a explorar cómo abordaron cuatro icónicas películas el tema de dejar salir instintos primarios (instinto de supervivencia, instinto gregario, agresividad y seducción).

Náufrago (2000): El Instinto de Supervivencia

Si hay algún instinto primario conocido y que todos sabemos que tenemos presente es el instinto de supervivencia. Se ha escrito mucho y de diversas formas, un instinto que no es exclusivo de los animales. Viene ahora a mi mente El llamado de la selva, pero también una buena cantidad de material audiovisual. Pero creo que el reflejo más simple y visceral y que más fresco tenemos como espectadores es Náufrago, del año 2000. A la actualidad, ha marcado un antes y un después y dejado huella en todos los que ven el filme.

En esta película vemos a Chuck Noland, interpretado de forma genial por Tom Hanks, enfrentarse a las limitaciones de su cuerpo y un escenario extremo que lo pone al límite. Quedar atrapado en la isla desierta hace que salga solo una necesidad primaria: sobrevivir, sobrevivir a toda costa aunque no sea la opción más fácil. La película anterior nos mostró los problemas que conllevan el aislamiento y dejar de vivir en sociedad. Los seres humanos no solo necesitamos lo básico para alcanzar nuestro potencial, también necesitamos una vida de conexiones profundas y emocionales para prosperar, está en nuestro instinto vivir en sociedad.

Forrest Gump, del año 1994, nos muestra a un protagonista que aunque no comprende del todo la sociedad en la que vive, sí se esfuerza por encajar al máximo en ella, creando a lo largo de la vida conexiones profundas y significativas. ¿Hasta dónde estamos dispuestos a llegar cuando lo que amamos es puesto en peligro? ¿Matarías por quien amas o por lo que amas? Amar es hacer todo por proteger, y para proteger muchas veces recurrimos a la agresividad como parte de un instinto mayor: el instinto de protección.

La agresividad es quizás el instinto primario que más nos aterra de la naturaleza y que muchas veces olvidamos que está presente en nosotros, oculto pero dispuesto a salir cuando nos sentimos en peligro o incluso con más fuerza cuando quienes amamos están en peligro. En Gladiador vemos cómo Máximo se enfrenta al sistema y su corrupción, luchando por la justicia. Es un reflejo de cómo, aunque la agresividad se ve como un defecto, hay situaciones en nuestra vida donde ser agresivos y la fuerza física son la única salida posible. La agresividad defiende su dignidad, sus valores más intrínsecos y a quienes ama.

Atraer, atraer... pareja, amigos, contactos. Estamos diseñados y queremos atraer a los demás, de cualquier forma posible. Nos vestimos con lo que nos queda mejor para atraer, compramos joyas, casas, autos para atraer. La necesidad de exhibirnos y atraer a las demás personas es, aunque lo neguemos, extremadamente primario. Mostrarnos al mundo es una parte esencial de nuestra naturaleza.

Escogí para la última película The Wolf of Wall Street porque creo que refleja ese punto de quiebre entre instinto de seducción y la ambición y exceso. Vemos en el protagonista una búsqueda constante de aprobación, una necesidad de seducir, de hacer que todos se vuelvan hacia él, dejando incluso a un lado sus propios principios. Ya sea luchando por sobrevivir, viviendo en sociedad, protegiendo a quienes queremos o deseando ser reconocidos y tener poder, nuestros instintos nos moldean y nos forman. Explorarlos a través del cine y el arte en general es una expresión de nosotros mismos.

Cinema is a mirror of our condition and has the ability to place us in extreme situations through the screen, creating the necessary identification with the actors for us to ask: What would we have done? Let’s take a moment to think about how many plots are driven by the trigger of letting a primary instinct flow—whether good, bad, or simply different. Instincts are always there; they’re just hidden.

Join me in exploring how four iconic films tackled the theme of letting primary instincts emerge (the instinct of survival, the instinct of social belonging, aggression, and seduction).

Cast Away (2000): The Survival Instinct

If there's any primary instinct we all recognize and know we possess, it's the survival instinct. Much has been written about it in various ways—an instinct not exclusive to animals. The Call of the Wild comes to mind, along with a good amount of audiovisual material. But I believe the simplest and most visceral reflection, the freshest one for audiences, is Cast Away from the year 2000. How far are we willing to go when what we love is at risk? Would you kill for those you love or for what you cherish? Loving means doing everything to protect, and often, we resort to aggression as part of a greater instinct—the instinct of protection.

Aggression is perhaps the primary instinct that frightens us most about nature, one we often forget exists within us—hidden but ready to emerge when we feel threatened, or even more powerfully when our loved ones are in danger. In Gladiator, we watch Maximus take on a corrupt system, fighting for justice. It reflects how, although aggression is often seen as a flaw, there are situations where being aggressive and using physical strength are the only possible solutions. Aggression defends dignity, intrinsic values, and loved ones.

Exploring them through cinema and art in general is an expression of who we are.
