Security has been the theme lately for me, and honestly, I think it’s one of those topics we should never get tired of talking about. Splinterlands runs on Hive, and that means our in-game assets are tied to our Hive accounts. If something goes wrong with your keys or account, you could lose everything.
Last week I shared a post about locking down your Splinterlands assets and enabling security notifications.
If you missed it, you can find it here: Let’s Talk Security: Locking Down Your Splinterlands Assets.
After that post, @bamlolx reached out to me and asked if I was aware of the recovery account notification. I wasn’t, to be honest. But the moment I heard about it, I went and enabled it right away. And today, I want to share why you should too.
What’s a Recovery Account Anyway?
On Hive, a recovery account is a backup option that helps you regain access to your account if your keys are lost or compromised. It’s basically your “safety net.”
Here’s the kicker though: many Hive users never bother to check who their recovery account is. If you created your account through an exchange, or bought it from someone, your recovery account might not even be secure, or worse, still set to the seller.
That’s a big deal, because the recovery account has the power to reset your keys and give control of the account back. If you don’t manage this properly, you could wake up one day to find your account, and your Splinterlands cards gone. Note changing recovery account will take 30 days to have effect.
You can check you account easily via https://hivehub.dev/@beaker007
As always you can check this for every account for you self, love the open blockchain data.

Why Recovery Notifications Matter
Just like with sps/card/land un-stake notifications, @bamlolx offers a notification service for recovery account changes. Once enabled, you’ll get a message if your recovery account is altered.
Why does this matter? Because if you didn’t make the change, then it means someone else did, and that’s a red flag. Getting an alert quickly could save your account, giving you time to act before it’s too late.
Setting it up is simple: just DM the notifier bot with:
!hive recovery <playername>
And BAM, you’re covered (at least for the notification be aware is one step).
Extra Reading from Splinterlands Support
When I started digging into this topic, I found that the Splinterlands support pages already have some excellent write-ups. Here’s a quick summary of the most useful ones:
How to Change Your Recovery Account
This guide walks you through how to change your recovery account to something secure. By default, your account might be linked to the wrong recovery (like an exchange or inactive account). Changing it ensures you actually control your own safety net.
Account Recovery Function
https://support.splinterlands.com/hc/en-us/articles/9838836926868-Account-Recovery-Function
This explains how the recovery function works if you lose your keys. With the help of your recovery account, you can reset your keys and regain access. Of course, this only works if you’ve set up a trusted recovery account beforehand.
Safety Recommendations for Buying Accounts
If you buy a Hive account (which includes Splinterlands accounts), make sure you immediately change the recovery account. Otherwise, the seller could simply recover it later and take everything back. The Splinterlands team strongly warns to be careful with account trading.
Final Thoughts
I’ll say it again: I’m not a Hive expert (learning as we go). I’m just a Splinterlands player who wants to keep my assets as safe as possible. That’s why I’m enabling security layers where I can, from unstake notifications to recovery account alerts.
So here’s my advice:
- Check who your recovery account is.
- If needed, change it to someone or something you trust.
- Enable notifications so you know if anything changes without your consent.
It takes only a few minutes, but it could save you thousands in cards, tokens, and time.
Big thanks to @bamlolx for bringing this up. Even if he was too "lazy" to make his own post about it 😉, i take that as he to busy expanding his services 😉. Also if i missed something let me know down in the comments.
And thanks to the Splinterlands support team for keeping the community informed with their guides.
Stay safe out there, and lock down your Hive security before it’s too late.
See you all on the battlefield

Very nice and important article – in my experience, most people in Splinterlands don’t know enough about their Hive account—what to do in case of unwanted access, and what really matters.
Through your guides, people get important information that could be crucial in a worst-case scenario!
Great work!
Thanks for this @beaker007
Thanks @bamlolx
Thanks for the tips @beaker007 , @bamlolx by the way, can you get a new discord link? Your post about the tool has a broken link.
