Everything to(get)her | Short story

The moment I pressed 'send' I knew I had made a terrible mistake.

But I didn't care.

I mean, I did, but I pretended not to.

Do I regret everything now? I have no idea. Because on the one hand, I feel like I have made the best decision. On the other hand, the worst.

I have known Kayla since we were kids. I don't remember any part of my life before I met her. She is the best thing that has ever happened to me, and I know that she feels the same about me.

She has had problems with her parents since forever. Her father, a well-known lawyer, yet an awful person. A kind of person who knows that holding power allows you to manipulate others as if they were your marionettes or pawns in a game. Her mother, a lovely woman, but without her own opinion, entirely under his husband's control.

I used to be jealous of Kayla's life. I was sitting by the window of the orphanage, looking at her going to the church with her parents every Sunday. She was always neatly dressed and seemed happy. I imagined them eating ice cream right after the mass and wandering around the park together.

When I got to know Kayla, everything changed. I didn't perceive her as a happy kid anymore. She had her demons. Even more then I did, an orphan.

I have loved Kayla since the moment I saw her for the first time. When she told me about how she had been feeling at her own home, a place where she should be safe, I cried for three days and three nights straight. I wanted to help her. Be her guardian angel. I guess at that moment I just changed my assumptions about her so quickly it terrified me. Always neatly dressed. Always happy. Always pretending...

That is why I didn't hesitate pressing 'send' on my phone. I knew that if she had agreed, that would have changed her life forever. A message 'Run away with me' was marked 'sent'.

And here we are. Holding our phones for the last time before destroying them. Our train to France is in 45 minutes. We will start a new life together and she can finaly be happy. Years ago I promised that I would help her. I would do anything for her. So here we are, accomplishing my mission. Drinking cheap wine on the roof of a high building in our town. Celebrating new start and the start of freedom. Looking at tall buildings. Taking another sip of wine. Staring at the sky. Dancing. Laughing. Crying. Together.

Beautiful love story. I wanted to read the ending before reading from the beginning, hahahaha, because I wanted to see the twist you were going to give it taking into account that first sentence in which every story has to start. Long live love!

Thank you 😁
