Word Counts, Picture Counts, Rewards, and more Week Ending 7 July 2025

in Hive Statistics2 months ago

The first week of July is now over, and I've refined the process of analysing the posts on HIVE, with some new metrics, and a bit of a new scorecard.

The below research is conducted using my brain, post history, PowerQuery, some light DAX, and a sense of interest in reward outcomes, based on the bits that make up a post's structure - words, pictures, and how they compare to similar posts.

I am also keen to hear from all of you what you think of this data, and how it can be further improved in the future.

For the first week of July, there were $32,266.35 worth of rewards distributed to posts. The average payout was $2.03, and the max was $85.60. The median was $0.63.

The highest word count was 12,168, the average was 413, and the median was 271. The overall trend of shorter posts being the more dominant on the platform continued, with only 37% of posts being longer than average.

image.png

6.5 million words were published in total on HIVE for the period, and here is the distribution of that, by word count:

image.png

Pay per word was down around half a cent per word, since the last set of data was imported, and the majority of the payouts went to posts under 750 words.

image.png

What about the typical post on HIVE? What does that look like? Well, thankfully, here's some stats:

image.png

There isn't much difference between the median and average post, other than the fact that there's significantly more words in the average, and a few more pictures.

How does total, aggregated payout look, compared to the word count? A little bit like the distribution of the posts, it seems, with a steep falloff for longer posts.

image.png

How about when we consider a few more variables, and look at the reward factor? That is to say, the highest payout in a word count group divided by the average? Are these posts 40x (overall) more valuable than the average post on HIVE?

image.png

Only 15.58% of all posts published on Hive were above average word count and above average pay out. 9.55% were below average word count, and above average payout. So, around 25% of posts took the lion's share of awards, - and I really do mean the Lion's share.

There is too high of a reward factor on posts in the category of "below average word count and above average pay out". Again, that's max payout divided by average, presented as a number.

image.png

What about when we look at authors on an individual basis, for the period? (Or at least the top 20 for each category?

image.png

The authors I tend to be interested in are those who post more words, because I enjoy that sort of content. People who get above average payouts, and have an above average word count, are very obviously putting the effort in - users like @galenkp, @tarazkp, @erikah are unsurprising to see in this list. They all also heavily engage with their commentors and stoke the good fires of conversation.

I'm not going to comment on the users with a below average word count and above average payout, because I do not immediately recognise any of the names on the list as it is not content that I currently read. Perhaps (for the content in English) - I might have a look and try to understand why these posts are rewarded for fewer words.

What about those potentially "emerging" authors, with Below Average payouts?

image.png

There are no names in the top 20 on either of these lists that I recognise across the great swathes of content published on HIVE. These are likely some authors to watch for, particularly those with longer word counts. If you're in a mood for taking a deeper look, please, be my guest, and flex some manual curation if you feel these authors deserve some more reward.

Finally, I have put together a view of the key metrics I'm looking into for this data set into a slice by community, sorted by total payouts.

image.png

Are there any other metrics you'd like to see?

So far I have

  • Posts / Authors
  • Total Payouts
  • Pay Per Word
  • Avg, Max, Median Word Count
  • Images Found
  • Avg Words Per Picture
  • Average Images
  • Pay Per Image
  • Total Net Votes
  • Pay Per Vote

What other elements would be useful to compare each communities posts against posts within that same community? Please let me know - and I will build some new features for future iterations of these posts.

Finally, something I've been talking about for a long time.

Who the fuck swears the most in their posts on HIVE? (Not comments, just posts!)

The only words, as an Aussie, that I consider swearing are "shit", "fuck", "cunt" (or variations thereof, so this captures "fucker", "fuckhead", "motherfucker", "shithead", etc

I think to no one's grand surprise, @galenkp continues to be the custodian of Hive's swear jar. Do try to be nicer to them, outside world. :)

image.png

Thanks for taking a look at the data. I'm keen to get more ideas from you all on how this can be improved for future iterations, or whatever other metrics I might be able to extract.

Sort:

Nice breakdown! Love seeing the PowerQuery insights and the focus on post structure. Keep it up! 👍

Thanks, looking forward to further feedback from the community so I can further enrich the reporting and analysis.

Why am I not surprised about Galen's lead! lol

Let's not make it all about the swear jar;)

I live stats. More please! 😆

Well, this data set is repeatable. Is there anything you think can enrich it further?

This is perfect. I was merely being over expressive of how much I love data.

You're not the only one!

I might have a look and try to understand why these posts are rewarded for fewer words.

Oh yeah! knowing that indeed would be truly interesting and valuable for everyone in the Hive ecosystem.

Who the fuck swears the most in their posts on HIVE? (Not comments, just posts!)

Phew! ¡Holy Smokes! I'm very surprised my username is not among the first 23 in that sinners list. LoL

Possibly because this is looking at posts only? This data will take a long time to interrogate further and see what trends and patterns are revealed.

Possibly because this is looking at posts only?

Oh no! I rarely swear in comments. So it has to be only in posts, where I could have some privilege.

I can't stand on a soap box, m'self, I weigh too much. I'll swear wherever I like (respectfully) ;) But there are always other, better adjectives to select.

haha this is cool! love these

Really a shocker to see Galenkp in the swear words... It does include "fucken", right? Because that seems to be one of his favorite variations :-D

Thanks for plotting all that data! Very interesting indeed :-) I always end up above the avg word count, which can be good, but sometimes I just lose myself a little too much in the ideas. Though I'm getting better at it, being more precise in presenting the arguments and hence more concise.

Yes, it picks up that. Top level posts only though, not comments.

Is there a way where I can see my own statistics regarding those metrics in peakD? Average words, average payout and such - with the base metrics I can calculate the rest and see where I stand 🙃

Yes, I can get an extract for you, I'm just doing my tax at the moment, I will reply to the reply of this with a csv like format of your posts in that period after that!

Awesome! Thank you! No rush, I'm just curious. Would be nice to include metrics like that into a summary when I hit the next milestone. You can send it to me via discord as well, same username - beelzael

But probably something more like this?

image.png

I was too damn lazy

Additional remarks: I added replies as that's a data point for every post, so we can see if above or lower than the average for all posts in that period.

While this is only a week's worth of data, I plan to .. uh, keep the data as I get it.

Can only get it seven days after the post is published, as that's how long it takes for the payout to finalise.

I could ramble more, but that will be for the next post.

So cool! Thank you so much! It seems like snaps are included as posts? That is the only way I could explain a 31 word post 😅

And I'm happy to read that I'm above average most of the time 🙂 Is that a tool, or an excel you built? It looks a little like an Excel sheet, but my excel skills are way too low to imagine that to be excel :-D

I can't even remember the last time I swore in a post or a comment.

Oh hang on, yes I fucken can...like one minute ago.

I'm shocked to find foul language in your posts, shocked I must say.

Yes indeed...my dad would be too...I never heard him swear, not once. He was a much better man that I could even imagine being.

Wow. Even I swear from time to time in front of Lily, though I try to avoid it. I do have certain social contacts that I tend to swear more with. Usually with those who do swear, too, as still can't help but adapting to situations all the time, instead of walking my straight line. Still working on that...

Humans have no straight line.

Oh shit, fucken awesome. I mean, some may think I'm a fucken shit cunt, but that's ok, I say fucken fuck off to shit cunts who think that fucken shit. 😵‍💫

These ones don't count, dickhead :)

What the fuck! Lol.

I wonder if I can write an entire post using the words, shit, fuck and cunt.

I reckon I can.

Its only top level posts for those analytical ramblings - there's too many comments for me to extract, and you (and me) are probably to blame for that.

The key is making it coherent. Much like this fine piece of widely cited academic work:

image.png

Lol...That's gold, I may just do a post like that...why not right?

Also, I'm surprised that cunt @meesterboom wasn't on the swearing list! Come on Boomy!

Haha, I do swear a lot but I don't post a lot!

Yeah that's true...More swearing or more posting...or both.

Did you read the abstract on the link? It is absolutely, and actually a published paper. 2008, though, don't think you'd get away with that today.

A published paper...must have been published by a Hive user looking for whale votes for doing fuck all.
