I used to get mad while playing online multiplayer games, broken controllers, throwing a fit, generally being a destructive person towards my possessions. I think the turning point that made me realize 'Getting mad and destroying stuff is dumb' was the fact that I would have to clean up the mess afterwards and pay for anything I had broken. Getting angry and destructive was expensive, especially when controllers were $60.
Dealing with toxicity was another thing to deal with and it was the idea that somebody 'got the last word' on me that would start the typing match, eventually coming to a closing point where we would just type 'umad' to each other until the match ended. I had acquired the talent for getting under peoples skins though but when news reports started coming out that people were tracking down the troll player and either beating them or straight up killing them I realized how serious a situation could turn if I messed with the wrong person, I was playing with strangers after all!
I still get upset while playing a intense game and failing to meet my goal but it only lasts for that moment in the match, afterwards I am fine, the moment has passed. So I think it's about not staying in that moment of anger or perhaps viewing how you conducted yourself and laughing at how silly it was to get mad over something so trivial.
I don't think Video Games cause people to be violent but perhaps it gives them better ideas on how to be a violent person and others may recognize the similarity to what the person did and a game characters actions.
Thank you for posting about this topic, testing if violence and gaming connect is quite a cycle with many variables that haven't even been included in tests.
Good that you are over that stage, as I said to another user, it's just video games. I think the best way to calm down is to not play competitive games for a while and just play a chill game, like stardew valley. Thanks for commenting and sharing your experience, it really makes me happy.
