I am excited to share my entry for Week 27 of the @gardenhive Question – What’s your favorite garden herb? Here’s my story about lemongrass and how it helps in our garden and daily life.

In our small home garden, there’s one herb that has become very important to me, the lemongrass. I didn’t realize how much I would appreciate it until I started planting it. Now, It’s not just a plant in my garden, it has become part of my everyday life.

We live near a river, and that means we always have a lot of mosquitoes. Before, I would always worry about my child getting bitten, but when I started growing lemongrass, I noticed a big change. It’s strong, fresh smell keeps the mosquitoes away naturally. Sometimes, I cut a few leaves and place them near the doors and windows to keep the insects out. It feels good to use something natural instead of relying on chemical sprays.

But what really made me love lemongrass is how it helps my health. I have a thyroid condition and there are times when I feel tired and stressed, especially because I used to work the graveyard shift. On those nights, instead of drinking coffee or soda, I would boil lemongrass and drink it war,. It heled me feel calm, less bloated and more energized. For me, this is proof that lemongrass is very effective, its not just a home remedy but a natural way to take care of my body.

Here’s how I make it:

  • I wash the stalks of fresh lemongrass
  • Then I boil about 1 to 2 cups and add the lemongrass and let it simmer for 10 minutes.
  • After straining it, I drink it warm.

Sometimes I add a little honey or calamansi if I want extra flavor. This tea is not only good for relaxing but also helps with colds, coughs, mild fever and even digestion. Its one of my favorite drinks when I don’t feel well.

Lemongrass also helps us earn a little extra income. Many people in our community buy lemongrass for cooking especially for lechon. Since we always have plenty growing in the garden, we sell some to neighbors and friends. It feels good knowing we are sharing something fresh and organic with them.

Growing lemongrass is very easy. It just needs sunlight, water and a little care, and it grows back even after you cut it.

This simple plant has given me so much: Protection from mosquitoes, better health, extra income and peace of mind. If you don’t have lemongrass in your garden yet, I highly recommend planting it. You might be surprised how such a simple herb can make a big difference in your daily life. 😍

Wow! I love lemongrass too! We have a lot of them in our garden and they're resilient to typhoons as well. That lemongrass tea is so powerful! My uncle actually used to boil stalks often for blood pressure regulation. Nature is really amazing, knowing that natural remedies are just around us and we can even cultivate them for more supplies. I enjoyed the visit and your story. Happy gardening! 💚

I love hearing that sis! It's amazing how lemongrass thrives even through typhoons, such one of the strong plant in our garden. Same with your uncle nature really gives us the best remedies of our health condition. Happy gardening too. 🌱

Wow. I heard it too that lemon grass is a good mosquito repellant. Before i also used lemon grass as an organic pesticide. I mixed the lemon grass extract with vinegar and ground chillies.

That's interesting! I didn't know you could mix lemongrass with vinegar and chilies. I will try it sometime, Do you just spray it directly to the plants?

I wanted to try it for a tea. This is interesting but I'm not sure I can get over the smell. It has a strong smell

Yes, it really does have a strong smell at first! But once it boiled, the scent becomes lighter and more soothing, fore me perfect for tea. maybe start with small amount so its not too strong the first time you try it.

I see. I'll try this one

My hubby planted some of it, but I don't know if it'll grow healthy. I hope so. Using it as a mosquito repellent is new to me. We're using oregano leaves as of now, and it's also effective. I think that's what lemongrass is for us. Lol.

Realmente me encanta el limoncillo aquí se le dice malojillo

That's amazing! We have lots of mosquito here but it's not so easy to grow lemongrass sadly. Many lemon plants are good for the nervous system though .. we grow lemon balm which makes a lovely tea too. It makes me happy hearing about how lemongrass helps you x
