Chit Chat Friday - Hive Garden Journal #5

in HiveGarden4 months ago

First of all, I can't wait to show off my new garden. I had it done a few weeks ago, digging up all the crap and clay, and replaced it with fresh soil and new turf. Now I have a very nice garden again!1000040131.jpg

1000039255.jpg

Then I did a bit of cosmetic tidying up. The area at the back of the garden doesn't get much sunlight, so I've converted that into a bedding. I've planted a marigold in there for the time being to give it a bit of colour. After summer I will replant my lavender here to let it grow.
1000040142.jpg

And in the rest of my garden...

At it's peak, I had 9 courgettes growing, but a few of them started to turn yellow and rot at the end. Apparently that was due to lack of calcium. Luckily I've been saving all my eggshells, and I quickly grind them down to powder and fed it to my courgette plant. Then I cut off a lot of leaves to improve air circulation. And hey presto! Now I have less courgettes but they're all nice and healthy.

1000040352.jpg

My tomato plants still aren't growing as well as I would like. There are quite a few trusses of tomato but most are still green. Either they're not going to grow, or I'm suddenly going to get a massive harvest of tomato soon. We shall see.
1000040356.jpg

1000040129.jpg

I've grown some Chinese mustard in front of the tomatoes. It's the first time I've grown them, and they're doing well so far. The annoying thing is that despite netting them, some bugs have still been nibbling at the them. Luckily the situation seems to have stabilised now and not worsened.
1000040351.jpg

In my last garden journal I showed you my lettuce. They are really so easy to grow and tonight I harvested a lot to make a salad. It was so tender and smooth, the best salad I've had!!! With many more to come.
1000040350.jpg

My bitter gourd is still plotting along, but not grown much. I found out recently bitter gourd is best grown in greenhouses in UK. No wonder. I don't think mine will be going very far, but it seems it is trying. There's even grown a tiny fruit. How cute!!
1000040355.jpg

The other month I read from @anggreklestari that water spinach was very easy to grow and can be harvested in 30 days. And I liked the sound of that. Mine are already a month old now, and they're still a long way away from harvest. The weather here is a lot colder than Indonesia, but I hope they'll still get there soon.
1000040360.jpg

Last and not the least, my gladioli from my mum's patch. They have come in full bloom in the past couple of weeks and are absolutely beautiful. It's sad to see them reach the end of their life already, but I know they'll be back again next year.

Before I go, I want to remind everyone of my Hive PPP Index. I'm looking for people to tell me the price of a basket of goods in your country and it would be great if you can help. You can find more information here. Thanks.

I'm writing this as a Chit Chat Friday series of post with the objective of driving up engagement and communication on Hive. The content will evolve around daily life things making it easy for everyone to take part to engage with one another. Hopefully it will interest you to make genuine engagement instead of two word spams like "Nice photos" "Very beautiful" or calling bots. I will be muting those comments.

This is taking quite a serious turn… I remember when you first started gardening. Sometimes you'd feel down, but you've really gained mastery, and now you're even handling heavy machinery! Haha, just kidding... but I’m not joking about how lovely and healthy everything looks. Well done!

Thanks! It's very satisfying to see even a small plant grow, like the bitter gourd, even though I know it will never mature.

At this rate, I'm going to need tractors in my garden farm 😁

Sometimes the plants we expect to do well turn out disappointing us and the ones we don’t expect to really do well surprises us.

Your marigold flower is beautiful and I love where it is situated. Makes it really colorful and beautiful.

I guess the weather condition is what is stopping your water spinach from growing as fast as hers’ but let’s see how it goes, hehe.

We've been lucky with a few bouts of heat wave, I think that's definitely helped a lot. Now just need for nature to do its work

Let’s see how it goes. I hope I don’t miss when you share the update on your next garden post.

Such a lovely garden update! It’s always inspiring to see the beauty and growth in every little corner—nature really brings joy. 🌿🌼🪴

Hive Garden is a great community, it's always nice to see what's happening in other people's garden around the world

Always best to let someone do that kind of jobs for you , they have the right tools and takes them a fraction of the time it would take you to do it .

keep the grass wet unless it's raining there .

Congratulations you have been curated and upvoted by @ecency

The landscapers have done a good job. I just hope the grass will last because previously the soil had a lot of leatherjackets.

I've been watering it every day, and the roots are growing nicely. We've had a few heat waves, and there's a hosepipe ban in other parts of the country, luckily it didn't effect me

ahh the may , june bug larva awesome bugs for photography . but to manny can be disaster

The Mother Thing likes to grow glads and marigolds. Her tomatoes are also all still green, but have plenty of time to ripen before frost threatens. Have you considered bleeding heart for that shady corner?

Just Googled bleeding heart , it's so pretty!! A little like the hotlips salvia I have. I'm going to see if I can fit some in the corner because the orange crocosmia are blooming now, then the pink nerines in front of them will bloom at the end of the year. It would be nice to have some spring to summer flower in the patch to have some colour all year round

Yuhuuuuu your lettuce looks really fluffy ❤️
Your marigold this time looks better.

My tomato plant even dried up, no rain for up to 2 months. I start thinking to add black net in upside

Let's see if your water spinach can be bigger. In Indonesia, indeed really sunny and hot. Different temperature will create different results.

Good luck on your garden.

The lettuce was so nice, soft and tender, I never realise lettuce can taste so silky smooth 😄

Tomato needs a lot of water and sun, it's a pity you have a lot of one but not the others. But the rest of your garden looks so effortless.

I've moved my water spinach out to catch the sun everyday and back to my greenhouse at night to give it a bit more warmth, hopefully that will help a bit

Wow - your garden is so neat and lovely! The gladioli is beautiful.

Eggshells - I pop an egg and a banana skin into the hole of tomato plants when I plant them. I probably don't need to as I put so many eggshells in the compost but it does seem to work...

Thats a good idea, sticking the nutrients in right at the beginning. My compost is generally pretty healthy, got loads of wiggly worms because I do bokashi compost (must write about that in the winter), I think otherwise my plants might not get this far

You have a beautiful garden, and each plants are thriving as I see it. Soon some of them will be ready to harvest. Having a good land and wide space is really a good thing as you can plant a variety of plants and even flowers. We also have a few veggies on our yard too. We already harvested some bitter gourd last week, hoping to harvest more soonest. 💃✨

I don't think I'd be harvesting any bitter gourd, but it's very nice to see that mini one growing, it's very satisfying.

Sometimes I wished I had more space to grow different things, maybe next year I should just sow a few seeds of one plant so I can get more variety in the garden

I wanted to see you in this "vehicle" (not sure about its name in English haha, but looks like fun hahaha)

The gladioli are beautiful 😍

It's called a digger. I was very tempted to ask the landscapers to let me go on it, but I was worried I may have an accident 🤣

It is a pleasure to see the crops in your garden that are still growing. Living in a South Asian country, the climate of my island is completely different (more cold) and I can see courgettes and bitter gourds in your garden. Sunlight is usually essential for the harvest of a crop. Therefore, if some plants have small plants covered with leaves, you can expose the small plants to sunlight by cutting off the leaves. Adding crushed eggshells to the courgettes to change the color of the fruit brings beneficial results.

In the past, tomatoes have not grown well in my garden either. So, a month ago, I added compost fertilizer mixed with cow dung to each tomato plant. The tomato plants have grown very quickly and are now producing fruit. I will show you that in my next gardening activity. Several gourd vines in our garden grew well and over a period of three months, we obtained large gourd pods for consumption. After three months, the gourd vines marked the end of their life, but they produced enough fruit, albeit in a melancholy manner. If you can provide more sunlight to the fruits and leaves, you too will be able to obtain a good gourd harvest.

Thanks for the tips. And it's good to hear you have had a good harvest!

Such a lovely and relaxing garden update! It’s always a joy to see nature growing and blooming—thanks for sharing your green space! 🌿🌼

Since the started gardening, I've come to appreciate nature a lot more

Your new garden is so amazing, @livinguktaiwan! 💖 It's cool how you fixed the courgettes, and your lettuce harvest sounds delicious ✨ Good luck with the tomatoes, and it's nice your gladioli bloomed so well! 🙏💖

Thanks @wanderelle.

I like how you added marigold for color and kept trying different plants. gardening really takes time and patience. I hope your tomatoes and spinach will grow well soon.

The marigold has been the best plant in my garden this year, it's so nice to look at and helps to keep bugs at bay

It’s a pretty flower. That’s a great idea to use eggshells for your courgette plant. I didn’t know they turn yellow when they don’t get enough calcium, good job using eggshells. Cutting the leaves was also a good. Fresh lettuce from the garden is always the best.

There's a lot to learn in the garden and I'm learning every day, I feel it's a life long thing, but very enjoyable.

I see you have just joined Hive, so welcome. I have a pinned post on my blog with tips for newbies, please check it out as the tips come from over 100 experienced users on Hive who know a lot between them. One of them is to create your blog header, it will make your blog look more professional

Thanks for the welcome and advice. I didn’t know about the blog header, but I’ll try to make one soon. I’m glad there’s a garden community on Hive because I’m also a farmer. I’m happy to be here.

Your gardening plans are very well-structured and maintain proper guidelines. From which I can learn a lot. Gardening is also a passion of mine. Best wishes to you.

That's looking good. We have lots of green tomatoes that could ripen any time soon. We have black ones that look to be almost ready. I am waiting for the last of the green to go on them. They are a new one for us (black opal variety). The potatoes have been good. Our courgettes are a bit puny, so maybe we have the same issue.

Seriously speechless about how far on your garden has matured and bloomed in just 12 months.
Well worth showing off and those gladioli...
