Why I love the Hive Garden Community

in HiveGarden8 days ago

I thought I'd better have a go at this question from the Hive Garden community Question of the Week - it's a group I've been faciliating these last few years so I guess I'm in a unique position to talk about it!

A Very Brief History of the Hive Garden Community

I used to run another group on Hive which kinda got bigger than I could handle, and I learnt a lot about the importance of the Hive communities there and their function in the larger Hive ecosystem. I took over the #gardenjournal challenge from a old school hiver @simplymike, whose real life committments meant they couldn't spend as much time here as they would have like. It felt like a responsibility to keep it going, as I knew I had the skills to do it and wasn't about to abandon the platform anytime soon. It's quite a big ask to have a challenge running for this long so I'm pretty proud that I've kept the ball rolling.

I actually didn't expect to like it a much as I did, and taking over the @gardenhive keys from another Hive user so that I could run the Hive Garden community felt like a real honour. With the help of @minismallholding and @owasco the foundations of the community were laid, and though they've also had real life commitments, they still help out when I'm desperate! The thing is, this is a community that almost runs itself through the engagement of the users and the dedication of many gardeners to writing their monthly #gardenjournals without promise of reward and now the #hivegardenqotw where people can have a writing prompt every Saturday for inspiration.

So Why Is the Community So Awesome?

I get a lot of warm and fuzzies from the Hive Garden community. It's a really supportive social environment - not only are people talking about plants, but they are talking about their gardens and gardening journeys which give us a glimpse into people's lives all over the world. Sure, people are showing off their tomatoes or bonsai but they're also sharing their cultural backgrounds, family life, philosophies, world views, personal highs and lows, and more.

image.png

I think we all love it in some way as we feel a shared connection and shared learning - I mean, Hive is already a social interaction model that rewards us not just with crypto but with a feeeling of being heard and valued. I've tried to foster that sense of people's contributions being recognised and valued, and I love it when people say that feel this way. It means a lot. It really feels like a supportive gardening club than a typical social media site. There's no animosity, bitching, trolling here either - I can count the dramas I've had in this group on one hand, so it feels super safe and supportive.

You can't help but be inspired by people's gardens here either. There's so much to be inspired by - how people use recycled materials, unique methods, recipes for organic fertilisers or pesticides, or trying new things. I've experimented with a lot more in my own garden because I've seen someone do it on Hive.

image.png

It's also been such a good thing since COVID too - so many people have started a garden because they had always wanted to, and their stories about how it's influenced their family budget or their mental health is really heart warming. There's a lot of negative stories in the world and this isn't one of them. I always feel such a sense of hope here. Hive gardeners are living proof that there are good people caring about nature and the environment.

image.png

Sometimes - often - I'm so busy in real life I have no time to comment and sometimes days go by and I haven't even voted or reblogged, which I feel guilty about, but I'm just a human doing their best. I have to say though it's not me that makes this community - it's all the incredible gardeners sharing their knowledge and their passion and coming back each month, each week, sometimes every day, to share their gardening journeys with others.

image.png

It's so good to contribute something to Hive through the Hive Garden community, and I hope that I can continue doing so into the future. I've still got some gardening life in me yet, both on chain and off.

With Love,

Hive Garden has now become my most favourite ( is that a term?) community on Hive. Partly because I have started gardening a couple of years ago, and mainly because there's very little abuse here, and where there is, it's very easy to spot.

I have learnt a lot from other gardeners here, both in terms of gardening techniques and culture. Like this morning I just learnt about Viljamovka, where you grow a pear inside a bottle and then pour brandy inside when the pear matures. How cool is that!

I love reading about other peoples garden, admiring their success hoping I can emulate it one day, learning from their failures so I can avoid or remedy in the same way, to see the creative recipes from around the world using produce they've grown, and how much happiness a garden brings to them and us on Hive.

Great work in taking on the baton, I couldn't think of a better team to do it!!

Thanks so much! This comment warms my heart!

Omfg that is incredible! Whose post was that!!!! I am always inspired here. There is a little bit of AI every now and then but we nip that in the bud asap. Try my best to keep it sweet!

I'm loving seeing your garden skills progress, and your frequent posts! It's actually really cool watching people get into gardening and develop over the years. I'm quite privileged to be part of it!!

Thank you for taking care of the Hive Garden Community! Community leaders, like yourself, are crucial at HIVE... You are leading by example, inspiring, and motivating others to be better and create even better posts (see them in @ourpick collections often)! And not just that, but you are making new community leaders who are engaging with others, sharing creative ideas, and implementing them...

In the case of Hive Garden, the results are visible! Plants are healthier, produce more fruits, and Hive gardeners are living better, in sync with nature!

Thanks for all your work! It is appreciated!

This is the community I miss the most with my time being so limited here now. I also miss having the time to spend in my own garden. 😔

I think it should also be said that while the Natural Medicine community got too much for you, it was the starting point for some communities which continue to thrive, like Holos & Lotus and Plant Power. So you could say that they are part of your legacy.

Aw, that's a lovely thing to say. I do think a lot of good sprouted from NM. Such a different time on Hive wasn't it, and then the pandemic too! It was a shame no one took the reins, but I'm certainly glad to be part of this little garden.

This is really great to share about gardening, or some plants that we harvest, planted or anything that's about garden. And this post really catches my attention, glad that I stopped by to read this. I also use recyclable materials like flower pot especially when I do not have flower container that is available. Likewise, i use compost from food scraps, vegetables, and fruits peelings.

I'll keep an eye out for your posts.

Wow! The tomatoes look so fresh and healthy. What a nice harvest! Love to see the photos, too.

Excellent.

You said it all.
I wouldn't add anything more except I agree.

Hi, I couldn't understand your post. Could you please explain to me just a little bit what your post is about so I don't have to type so much?

Can you use translator? What font you understand? This is a strange request.

This reminds me of the first time I grow pumpkins, it was a huge emotion to see them. I congratulate you for it!

Yes, I agree, Hive Garden is a nice community. I tried posting there and it turned out great.

Good to hear!

I'm grateful I found this kind of community here as I'm really a person who loves gardening, way back I just go gardening without sharing it online I'm still happy doing it, but now is different, I'm glad that I could share my garden and its journey too, I feel satisfied that all my hard work in making my garden finally I can share it here❤️

Yay! Glad you are sharing x

Even though I’m still young, I’ve always wanted to have my own garden one day. It’s inspiring to see how many people share their gardening stories here and how everyone supports each other.

I started gardening at 16 I think, in pots..

That's what I've called gardening ☺️. All hardship can be replaced with that beautiful fresh vegetables.

Thank you for all the hard work you've done for the Hive Garden community. It's amazing how this group brings gardeners together from all over the world. I really enjoy stories, gardens and learning new things. You've made this a kind and inspiring place. 😍
