Those who know me already know that Amélie Nothomb is one of my favourite authors.

What's more, she is Belgian, like me.

On an island off the coast of Cherbourg, an old man and a young girl live in isolation, surrounded by servants and bodyguards, shielded from any reflection; under no circumstances must Hazel see her own face.

Hired to care for the young girl, Françoise, a nurse, discovers the strange mysteries that bind these two characters. She learns why Hazel resigns herself, night after night, to the caresses of the old man. Amélie Nothomb's books are rarely thick, and she has a style all her own, which you either like or you don't. So even though the summary didn't particularly appeal to me, I decided to read this book, which is barely 189 pages long.
It's a pocket-sized book, but the print is quite large. My copy is starting to fall apart, as some of the pages are coming loose in places. I think I'll try to stick them back together so I don't lose any pieces.

Les livres écrits par Amélie Nothomb sont rarement épais et elle a un style bien à elle, qu'on apprécie ou pas. Donc, même si le résumé ne m'attirait pas outre mesure, j'ai décidé de lire ce livre d'à peine 189 pages.
C'est un livre au format poche, mais c'est écrit assez grand. Mon exemplaire commence à s'abîmer puisque certaines pages se détachent par endroits. Je pense que je vais essayer de les recoller pour ne pas perdre des morceaux.

The story is well written, with literary references, but that's not all.

L'histoire est bien écrite, avec des références littéraires, mais pas seulement.

We are not Hazel, the young girl at the centre of the story, and so even if we do not understand her reactions and feelings, we cannot judge her. We have not lived every moment of her life as she has; we only see it from the outside.

Many people judge another person's behaviour simply based on what they see or hear, but this is a mistake. They may try to understand, but their experience will never be the same as that of the person they are judging.

As you will have understood, reading this book leads us to reflect on many things, particularly our prejudices.

Nous ne sommes pas Hazel, la jeune fille au centre de l'histoire et, donc, même si nous ne comprenons pas ses réactions et son ressenti, nous ne pouvons pas la juger, nous n'avons pas vécu chaque instant de sa vie comme elle l'a vécu, nous ne voyons tout cela que de l'extérieur.

Nombreuses sont les personnes qui jugent le comportement d'une autre personne, simplement à travers ce qu'ils en voient ou ce qu'ils en entendent, mais c'est une erreur, ils peuvent essayer de comprendre, mais leur vécu ne sera jamais le même que celui de la personne qu'ils jugent.

Vous l'aurez compris, la lecture de ce livre amène à réfléchir sur plein de choses et notamment sur nos préjugés.

It was an enriching read, for me at least.

I've just chosen my next read, which will be a short crime novel by an Italian author I'm not yet familiar with.
