[ITA/ENG] Narcissus Festival – A Carnival on the Mountain

Spring is now in full swing, and the last Sunday of May is a special day for Rocca di Mezzo, a village in Abruzzo located on a plateau about 1,400 meters above sea level, not far from the Gran Sasso. It's known as a ski resort, but to me, it's much more than that.

Those who know me are aware of how much I love this place. It’s my refuge from the sweltering Roman summer — a place where I can recharge among the mountains, a bit like Heidi wanting to escape from Frankfurt... Since I don’t know how to ski, I avoid coming in winter or early spring, when the nights are still very cold and the house is absolutely freezing.

The village has all the charm of a typical mountain town: stone houses nestled closely together as if to protect themselves from earthquakes, narrow alleys that wind up and down through stairs and ancient archways. Walking through it is a calming, joyful experience.

But this year, I made an exception. I really wanted to take part — at least once in my life — in the Narcissus Festival. So we literally escaped from Rome to attend this springtime mountain carnival, which involves not only Rocca di Mezzo but also the neighboring villages.

We had lunch in one of these villages, surrounded by forest. This is bear and wolf country — more specifically, the Marsican brown bear, a symbol of the Abruzzo National Park. In the village, there was a beautiful carved wooden totem, probably dedicated to a mama bear and her cub... or at least, that's how I like to imagine it.

The Marsican bears are a protected species and rarely venture into inhabited areas although it may happen from time to time.

But let’s get back to the festival. For the occasion, papier-mâché floats are built and paraded throughout the village, amidst market stalls, music, laughter, and yes even fabulous prizes and party favors!

The most unique part? All the floats are decorated with real narcissus flowers, hand-picked by the locals. Each flower is placed one by one, by hand, during a long night and the following morning. It’s a true community celebration, with grandparents and grandchildren, moms and kids all joining in.

Creativity and imagination are everywhere.

This year, one of the floats even featured a dinosaur — inspired by a large fossilized footprint discovered on nearby Monte Cagno, perhaps left by a sleeping dinosaur, now forever at rest.

With the marching band and the parades, the afternoon flew by in a heartbeat.

And my favorite float? Of course, the one that made me think of you — the bear float! Why? Because it featured a big jar of honey — a bear's favorite treat — and two little bees peeking out.

And in that moment, I felt like Hive was there too, and all of us with it.

Buonanotte, piccole api operose!

Goodnight, little busy bees!

A warm hug 💛

P.S. This time the photos are mine (unfortunately!), taken with my Oppo Reno Z4, no filters (double unfortunately)... but I hope I still managed to share a bit of the magic of the day with you.

What an awesome post! That looks like so much fun, I would have loved to have been there too! It's fun to go to festivals like that and appreciate all the tradition. I had never heard of Heidi before until I Googled it and found out about the show from back in 1978. You must have been really young when that show was televised, I think we're the same age. Assuming the 72 refers to a birth year!

What a great getaway from the heat of Rome in summer. I prefer Rome in spring or fall personally!

Thanks for stopping by! I'm really happy you enjoyed the vibe of the post. I had such a great time! And I was flying solo that day, no kids in tow... free as a butterfly! 🦋

To me, late autumn is the best time to enjoy Rome, especially October. September still clings to summer a bit too much for my taste.

And about Heidi, naturally I meant the original book from the early 1800s... of course not the anime version from - but just for example - 1972 a certain year that’s very dear to my heart 😇
(Shhh… a lady never tells, and you should never ask! 😜)
