Hace un mes vivimos un momento muy triste en casa. Nuestra perrita Niña, una salchicha que fue parte de la familia durante años, nos dejó. Para mi mamá fue especialmente duro… Niña era su sombra, su compañera inseparable. El silencio que dejó en casa fue demasiado grande.

Después de eso, decidimos que en algún momento adoptaríamos otra perrita, no para reemplazar a Niña, porque eso es imposible, sino para llenar un poquito ese vacío con nuevos ladridos, patitas suaves y amor perruno. Pero teníamos claro algo: queríamos una cachorrita. Así que esperamos. Con paciencia, revisando publicaciones de la Sociedad Protectora de Animales de Holguín, hasta que un día… la vimos.

Pequeñita, con orejas grandes y cara de “llévame contigo”. En su hogar temporal le habían puesto “Pulgarcita” por lo diminuta que era. Pero para nosotros, en cuanto la vimos, supimos que se llamaría Chiqui.

La historia de Chiqui nos tocó el alma. Fue abandonada en la clínica veterinaria cuando apenas era una recién nacida. Al ser destetada tan temprano, presentó anemia y algunos otros problemitas de salud. Pero gracias al amor y esfuerzo de los voluntarios y veterinarios, logró salir adelante. Y hoy… hoy por fin llegó a casa.

Tan chiquita que parece de juguete, tan frágil que da miedo alzarla, pero con una energía tan viva que nos robó el corazón desde el primer segundo. Ya se nos cuela entre los pies, ya tiene su rinconcito favorito en la cocina, es muy golosa, y ya logró algo muy especial: volver a hacer sonreír a mi mamá.

Chiqui no viene a ocupar el lugar de nadie. Ella está escribiendo su propia historia con nosotros, ladrido a ladrido, pasito a pasito. Y aunque aún nos asusta lo pequeña y delicada que es, estamos seguros de algo: llegó a donde siempre debió estar.

A month ago we lived a very sad moment at home. Our little dog Niña, a dachshund that was part of the family for years, left us. For my mom it was especially hard... Niña was her shadow, her inseparable companion. The silence she left at home was too great.

After that, we decided that at some point we would adopt another dog, not to replace Niña, because that's impossible, but to fill that void a little bit with new barks, soft paws and doggy love. But one thing was clear to us: we wanted a puppy. So we waited. Patiently, reviewing publications of the Sociedad Protectora de Animales de Holguín, until one day... we saw her.

Small, with big ears and a "take me with you" face. In her temporary home she had been called "Pulgarcita" because she was so tiny. But for us, as soon as we saw her, we knew her name would be Chiqui.

Chiqui's story touched our hearts. She was abandoned at the vet clinic when she was just a newborn. Because she was weaned so early, she had anemia and some other health problems. But thanks to the love and effort of the volunteers and veterinarians, she made it through. And today... today she finally arrived home.

So small that she looks like a toy, so fragile that it is scary to lift her, but with such a lively energy that she stole our hearts from the first second. She already slips between our feet, she already has her favorite corner in the kitchen, she has a sweet tooth, and she has already achieved something very special: she made my mom smile again.

Chiqui is not here to take anyone's place. She is writing her own story with us, bark by bark, step by step. And although it still scares us how small and delicate she is, we are sure of one thing: She has arrived where she was always meant to be.
