Lemon Cake and Latte at Moca Coffe - Barquisimeto [En-Es]

On April 18, I visited the Moca Café branch located in Nueva Segovia, Barquisimeto, Lara, Venezuela. The reason was to have a conversation with my former thesis advisor and the director of the Urbanism program at the university where I studied. Our conversation would revolve around a soil study analysis and some complementary topics related to a postgraduate degree in urban design that I plan to pursue.

I had never been to this particular branch before. Moca Café has several locations throughout Barquisimeto and the city of Cabudare. The café’s style is generally very pleasant and immersive. I know this branch opened recently. The façade design is elegant and sophisticated.

Unlike the main branch, this one is smaller and has a cozy outdoor seating area at the entrance. There’s even a table with two chairs right at the door. Personally, I prefer air-conditioned spaces—mornings in Venezuela are extremely hot.

I arrived at the café a little late, although the professor assured me I was still on time. I had an issue with my motorcycle; the brake failed, so my brother had to go back, and I had to take a taxi.

Upon arrival, the waiter and manager of the location handed me the menu right away. He was very polite and courteous. This happened as I greeted the professor and began our discussion about the two main topics I mentioned earlier. The menu at this branch was different—I really liked the quality of the print and the refined paper it was printed on.

I took the opportunity to photograph a top-down view of the back area, where a beautifully crafted cup of coffee was displayed. What I appreciate most about Moca Café is the subtlety with which they prepare each of their products—the same quality they advertise is exactly what they deliver.

I asked the professor what he wanted to eat and told him to order freely, no restrictions (laughs). As for me, I asked the waiter if they had an Oreo cake I had seen on their Instagram page—I couldn’t remember the name—but he told me it wasn’t available. I saw a lemon tart in the display case and decided to order that instead. My professor and colleague chose a chocolate cake (I didn’t take a picture—I felt it would be intrusive. I’m a respectful person).

This time, I ordered a cinnamon latte. Lately, I’ve felt the urge to drink coffee that way—it’s delicious. The professor ordered a regular latte (both of us asked for large sizes). Our order took no more than five minutes. Everything was very fast.

I must highlight that the tart was delicious. I liked how it was presented and plated. The coffee’s latte art was basic, but the flavor was incredible, and that’s what matters most. I believe the taste of a good coffee is the most important thing.

The professor felt very comfortable and said he would bring his wife there next time. He works hard and has dedicated many years of his life to the university. Now, he wants to spend the rest of his life enjoying his career, not overloading himself with responsibilities.

During our talk, the professor explained that he wants to leave the university and the Urbanism program in the hands of others (a new generation). It’s no longer feasible for him to keep teaching; that time could be better spent working as an advisor or real estate manager.

I understood his point of view. He offered me a teaching opportunity, but I told him I wasn’t interested due to the low pay: 5 USD wouldn’t be useful to me. I told him I admire everyone’s dedication, but I see it as something done just to build a résumé. Well, although they receive bonuses, I find it degrading that they have to log into a government platform to access them (that’s just my opinion).

Obviously, the professor doesn’t live off that salary, but he offers his service because he loves urbanism—just like I do. However, we’re adults, and we know our responsibilities. The conversation was very fluid and enjoyable; I liked having coffee with him. That day, I understood which path I needed to take. It was time to close one chapter and begin writing a new one.

The café has won several awards and serves specialty coffee. Inside, there’s a very comfortable space for discussing work and projects. It’s a wonderful place to work—too bad the infrastructure, construction, and building sectors are currently stalled in Venezuela.

We finished talking at 1:00 p.m., Venezuelan time, and I paid the bill, which came to about 30 USD (or HBD). I found it reasonable, considering the professor ordered another coffee, and I ordered a bottle of water and a takeaway coffee for my brother. The Moca Café branch in Nueva Segovia is perfect for connecting and having a pleasant conversation. It’s a peaceful space where you can truly enjoy the magic and flavor of coffee in its finest form.

The coffee and lemon cake look amazing, I loved the size of the cup, it's the right one for me, it's a reasonable size.
I'm glad you enjoyed your stay there, which, despite not being that big, is cozy. I agree with what you say about preferring air-conditioned environments, in Venezuela the heat is unbearable.
Much success in your projects, greetings 🤗☕

I've noticed some cafes don't really bother with proper menus, since they don't have that much on offer - I appreciate them when I find them too! It adds something to the experience. Although talking with someone who genuinely excites you late into the night is in itself a fantastic experience :) Thank you for sharing it with us.

I agree with that detail, it is very difficult to find a coffee shop with a formal and elegant menu. It is a charm to be able to find a place with it, you feel very good, I think it is very good to be able to talk with a person who shares similar tastes, time passes quickly, more if it is having a coffee.
