My country is blessed with intelligent minds who make an impact all over the world in every industry, from finance and medicine to sports and beyond. Aside from being blessed with intelligent minds, my country is also blessed with abundant natural resources; it has rich deposits of many minerals, which contribute to the country's wealth. The country has a beautiful cultural heritage, hosting over 250 ethnic groups with beautiful cultural practices like their foods, style of dressing, dance and festivals.
One of the things I love about my country, Nigeria, is the unity we show when we are called to be united. I can remember many occasions when it might seem as if we are a divided people, but as soon as a world competition comes up, we all come together to support and cheer our country’s representative. We are always good at standing as a nation. Even on social media banters, where you will find a united Nigerian stand the most, we are ever ready to defend the country’s pride any day and at any time.
The people of Nigeria are a bunch of happy people; even in the midst of chaos, they always find humour in everything. Because of how religious we are, we are a hopeful people, always believing that there is a better tomorrow, despite the everyday hardship, an average Nigerian will always show up to work or the religious place with a heart filled with gratitude, believing that their tomorrow will be greater than their today. Hope is what keeps us as a country, and hope is what unites us even more.
The thing I don’t fancy about my country is the corrupt state of the nation, corruption started gradually at the grass root but has corrupted the hearts of most people in the nation, if you meet a young person today and ask about corruption some will tell you that it is only corruption when you are not in the benefiting side, but for as long as you get your own slice of it, it is no longer corruption. People who have longed to be in power to fight corruption tend to get corrupted so easily, as if to say it was all a propaganda to be allowed to serve, and instead of serving the majority, they tend to serve their beliefs when they get there, its like the seat of power is the problem correcting every individual or all along, it was what they have had in mind.
A major road leading to the capital city of my country is usually congested due to having a large population of workers who work in the capital city (Abuja) residing in that area. People have lamented and have gotten tired of complaining to the government to increase the width of the road or to just do something that will reduce the traffic congestion. This is serious because the traffic congestion created an avenue for thieves to rob others on the traffic. Just recently, the government has decided to build a better road in order to solve the traffic situation, making the journey to and from the city less exhausting and safer for the commuters. This is the current happening in my country that has my attention. Here in my country, it takes the grace of God for the ruling class to affect the lives of the poor. Most times, they put effort only because elections are coming, and once they are elected, it is back to normal business.
As much as we are united, we are sometimes divided by religion or ethnicity, which is the enemy of the progress of my country. My country is a great place, no doubt, but the greed of a few individuals is reflecting on the many; people go for my religion or my ethnicity even when it comes to politics, rather than going for the best candidate.
