Imagine a place where fire brigades live in constant rivalry, competing to be the first to reach the blaze, plant their flag upon it, and claim the glory of having halted the ravenous tongues of flame, always eager to consume everything in their path. Picture a city where its inhabitants even keep a tally of the fires extinguished by each brigade, misfortunes that etched upon the urban map traces of ashen darkness, sorrow and, of course, a dampness that did not exclude weeping. Imagine… that you are in Havana, in the year 1890.

You are standing at the corner of Mercaderes Street and Lamparilla in Old Havana. Through a large glass panel you can discover this room. You will notice that it is small, but history is inscribed on its walls—in drawings, framed documents, objects, costumes, and photographs. You have stepped back in time.

This walk took place a few days ago, when we still did not know, nor could we have imagined, the fire that today, June 4th, 2025, consumes our hearts

Este paseo ocurrió hace unos días cuando todavía no sabíamos, ni nos imáginábamos, acerca del incendio que hoy, cuatro de junio de 2025, nos consume los corazones.

I took the photos with my phone and edited them in Lightroom. Although they are all, or almost all, in color, I wanted to give them that texture by adding grain to the image.

The Tribute Hall to the Firefighters of Havana sits on a corner, and from another glass panel as you turn, you can see that it is small. It was closed, as it was 5:10 in the afternoon when I passed by.

La Sala de Homenaje a los Bomberos de La Habana hace esquina y desde otro panel de vidrio al doblar puedes observar que es pequeña. Estaba cerrada ya que eran las 5:10 de la tarde cuando la visité.

And now, let's pause here for a moment to tell you what happened on May 17th, 1890, at the old Isasi Hardware Store. There is hardly any space—it's narrow, and I'm holding my bicycle, backpack, and phone. They’ve placed these zinc sheets to mark off a construction zone next door, leaving very little room to stop and peer through the glass. But as long as no one comes by...

Give me a few minutes to search through my Hive posts and show you the monument also dedicated to the fire brigade at the Colón Necropolis. There’s a photo on the wall—if you look closely—but I imagine I must have captured it myself.

Back then, there were two fire brigades in the city—the Comercio Brigade and the Ayuntamiento Brigade—and they had their rivalries. When news of the fire broke after 10:30 at night, the Comercio firefighters were the first to arrive, followed later by those of the Ayuntamiento. Locals gathered to witness the spectacle, while the owner of the hardware store did not appear until several hours later.

Then, two explosions of great magnitude shook the area. It is said to have been apocalyptic—a blazing glow in the sky, surrounding buildings collapsing, and firefighters caught in their efforts, ultimately buried under the ruins.

Of the 38 recorded deaths, 25 were volunteer firefighters from both brigades. The fire was extinguished, but Havana was draped in mourning. Isasi had stored explosives in his warehouse—something he was not permitted to keep there.

Y ahora vamos a detenernos un poco aquí para contarte lo que sucedió un 17 de mayo de 1890 en la antigua Ferretería Isasi. Casi no hay espacio, es estrecho y estoy sosteniendo la bicicleta, la mochila y el móvil. Han puesto estas tejas de zinc para delimitar un área de obras constructivas al lado y dejaron muy poco espacio para detenerse y mirar por los cristales, pero mientras no venga nadie...

Dame unos minutos para buscar entre mis publicaciones de Hive y mostrarte el monumento que también se hizo en honor del cuerpo de bomberos en la Necrópolis de Colón. Está allí en la pared una foto, si te fijas bien, pero imagino que yo lo haya retratado. Espera... es un viaje temporal más corto, lo que demorado. Ya sabes como son las comunicaciones aquí...

Lo que sucedió fue que por aquella época la ciudad contaba con dos cuerpos de bomberos, el del Comercio y el del Ayuntamiento, y ambos tenían sus rivalidades. Cuando llegó la noticia del incendio pasadas las 10:30 de la noche, los primeros en llegar fueron los del Comercio, luego los del Ayuntamiento, y los vecinos de la zona acudieron también a observar el espectáculo. El dueño de la ferretería no se apareció por allí hasta después de varias horas... Ocurrieron dos explosiones de gran magnitud. Cuentan que aquello era apoteósico, un gran resplandor en el cielo, los edificios alrededor colapsando, los bomberos en sus faenas quedaron sepultados. De las 38 muertes contabilizadas ese día, 25 eran voluntarios de ambos Cuerpos. El incendio fue sofocado, pero la Habana se vistió de luto. Isasi guardaba explosivos en su almacén y no tenía permisos para eso.

In that cemetery post, I felt a little lost. You see, nothing is coincidence. Fate led me to search through my things, hoping to find what I wrote on November 27th, 2023, thinking I might come across the photo of the Monument to the Firefighters. It’s not there; however, today, I am overwhelmed by a similar feeling.

The fire burning these days is the restriction placed on Internet access for Cubans. How? By raising prices to unbearable levels. Imagine that the brilliant minds at the only telecom company we have—one that’s falling apart—conducted a study (so they claim), which supposedly found that 50% of customers consume 6 GB of data per month (a figure that is not even accurate in official documents). Then came the price hike, justified by their need for infrastructure funds… They declared on their official channels that the networks are on the verge of collapse.

To put it simply: we can purchase 6 GB of data per month for 360 CUP, and when that runs out, the only option is to buy extra plans. Alternatively, we can receive top-ups from abroad to buy as many 6 GB plans as we want. They are literally forcing our family members abroad to pay for their poor service.

Tell me, sincerely—does this make sense to you? Because to me, it doesn’t.

Vamos a salir de este lugar estrecho. Vienen personas que necesitan pasar. Y así te cuento un poco de lo que me pasa, de lo que nos pasa...

En aquel post del cementerio me sentía un poco perdida. Ya ves que nada es coincidencia. Quiso el destino que yo buscara entre mis cosas para mostrar lo que escribí el 27 de noviembre de 2023, pensando en hallar allí la foto del Monumento a los Bomberos. No está; sin embargo, un sentimiento parecido me embarga hoy.

El incendio por estos días es que nos limitaron (a los cubanos) el acceso a Internet. ¿Como? Encareciéndolo a más no poder. Imagina que los sesudos de la única compañía telefónica que tenemos, que se está cayendo a pedazos, hicieron un estudio -dicen ellos- que arrojó que el 50% de los clientes gastan 6 GB de datos al mes (un dato que no es correcto en documentos oficiales). Metieron un tarifazo alegando que ellos necesitan dinero para infraestructura... que las redes están casi colapsadas, dijeron en sus medios oficiales.

... sencillo para que entiendas. Tenemos posibilidad de comprar 6 GB de datos para un mes a 360 CUP. Y cuando se acaben sólo tienes la opción de comprar los planes "extra". O también puedes recibir recargas del extranjero para comprar todos los planes de 6 GB que quieras. Ellos están obligando "literalmente" a nuestros familiares en el exterior a pagar por su mal servicio. Dime, sinceramente, ¿esto te cabe en tu cabeza? Porque a mí no.

Many people are already going to bed without food... yet our beloved leaders are busy taking care of our mental health because, as you know, too much time online is bad. It’s an addiction. 😃

Now, 3 GB + 300 MB of national browsing costs 3,360 CUP, the first of the "extra" packages. You can see them in the screenshot above... Who can afford that? We will have to limit our presence online, whether for work, study or entertainment—which is also legitimate and a right, isn’t it?

But I’ll be able to address this later—before my 6 GB package runs out, obviously.

A small detail: I’ve already set up two firewalls—one on my phone and another on my laptop—and I’m burning through more than 500 MB per day. 😁 Without watching videos, downloading anything, or uploading photos over 1 MB… just opening and commenting on a few Hive posts. Encouraging!

Cómo se atreven a hacer esto en un país donde el salario mínimo es de 2100 CUP y el medio es de 4648, en un país que ya está dolarizado y los precios de todo se fijan a partir del mercado informal de divisas. Hoy el cambio está sobre los 374 CUP por 1 USD. _{Calculadora de la web elTOQUE} Ya mucha gente se acuesta sin comer... así que nuestros amados dirigentes están ocupados en cuidarnos la salud mental porque tú sabes que tanto tiempo en Internet es malo. Es una adicción. 😃

3 GB + 300 mb de navegación nacional por 3360 CUP es el primero de los paquetes "extra", puedes verlo en la captura de pantalla de arriba. ¿Quién puede pagar eso? Tendremos que reducir nuestra presencia en las redes, ya sea trabajo, estudio o entretenimiento que también es legítimo y un derecho, ¿verdad?

Allí en la página https://www.etecsa.cu/ puedes mirar los nuevos planes. Una joya. Si haces una búsqueda en Google vas a ver que Cuba está que arde con esta nueva movida en la que subyacen muchos más factores, por supuesto...

Pero esto lo podré abordar más adelante, antes de que se me acabe el paquete de 6 GB, obvio.

Un pequeño dato: ya puse dos cortafuegos, uno en el móvil y otro en la laptop y gasto más de 500 Mb por día. 😁 Sin ver videos, ni descargar, nada, ni subir fotos de más de 1 MB... sólo abriendo y comentando algunas publicaciones de Hive. ¡Alentador!

I just wrote this post and haven't done anything else on Hive... 🤐 and there are other little details there in the picture like the connection speed and my data signal.
