Conoce la mejor universidad de Margarita: La UDO - [Esp/Eng]

Primeramente, saludo fraternal a toda la comunidad de @hivermargarita

Más que playas y centro comerciales fancys, una de las cosas que puedes hacer en la Isla de Margarita es estudiar una carrera universitaria en una de las mejores universidades del país, la Universidad de Oriente, o mejor conocida como La UDO .... Si, suena bastante fuera de tono según la naturaleza de los posts de la comunidad, sin embargo, hay pocas cosas tan representativas de la juventud margariteña como la Udo Nueva Esparta.

Fundada en 1958 en la Ciudad de Cumaná, estado Sucre, la "casa más alta de Oriente", ha llenado de luces y oportunidades de estudio a la región oriental de Venezuela, pero no sería hasta 1969 cuando se habilitaría una extensión de núcleo universitario en la Isla de Margarita, Estado Nueva Esparta, y desde entonces, ha brindado calidad educativa a los jóvenes de la isla.

Entrar a la UDO, no es fácil. La universidad posee sus propios meticulosos métodos para seleccionar a sus estudiantes, por lo cual, entrar a la universidad implica llevar tus papeles y esperar el milagro de que te acepten. En mi caso, soy estudiante de la escuela de ciencias del 2do semestre apenas. Estoy comenzandito apenas. Al salir del bachillerato pasé casi un año esperando para entrar a la universidad debido a que a la carrera que quería entrar tiene mucha demanda y únicamente se puede entrar por procesos de selección interna de la universidad, fue toda una odisea poder inscribirme, pero aquí estamos. Lo díficil ya pasó, que fue entrar, ahora viene lo peor, terminar la carrera.

Importante mencionar que la UDO no se maneja por facultades o departamentos como otras universidades. Se utiliza el término "Escuela" para referirse a estas.
En términos de infraestructuras, tenemos 6 edificios (uno para cada escuela o facultad) y 3 complejos de unidades de investigación, además de una cancha de usos múltiples, un auditorio, unos cuantos cafetines, y una plaza común que debes atravesar para llegar al edificio donde tengas clases. Este espacio común, conocido como "la plaza de las ideas", o más correctamente "la plaza del truco"; es el sitio donde interactúan los estudiantes de diferentes escuelas. Se le conoce como plaza del truco, debido a que tiene un par de mesitas donde los estudiantes suelen jugar truco (un juego de cartas de envite y azar muy característico de la región); y los profesores conscientes de eso, buscan luchar contra ese concepto de la plaza, y por eso la bautizaron como "plaza de las ideas", lugar donde dan charlas 2 días a la semana, donde incluso yo he tenido el placer de participar dando charlas por ser estudiante mala conducta.

La udo reune gente de todo tipo, es probablemente el ambiente más diverso de toda la isla de Margarita. Existe el estereotipo de que la mayoría de los estudiantes son pobres o de clases sociales marginadas, pues es la universidad pública de mayor calidad, pero no es así. La gente de la udo es tan variada que podrías perfectamente encontrar gays, prostitutas, sifrinos, negros, y árabes, conviviendo todos en la misma plaza común de estudiantes. El ambiente es tan diverso, que siendo francos, no tengo muy en claro el concepto de "ser normal" dentro de la universidad, después de todo, es la universidad, el lugar donde te desarrollas y te descubres a ti mismo.

Sin embargo, es gracias a esta pluriculturalidad que tenemos una vida estudiantil tan activa. Gracias a los movimientos estudiantiles, existen materias extra académicas de todo tipo, y por eso todas las semanas se realizan actividades dentro del campus universitario; por ejemplo, todos los viernes se juega la Udo Cup, que es el torneo de fútbol sala interno de la universidad, y el ganador nos representa contra otras universidades al final del semestre (spoiler: siempre ganamos). Si el fútbol no es lo tuyo, puedes alistarte en el equipo de softbol, o en las clases de danza, o en la Coral universitaria, o incluso puedes inscribirte en clases de teatro.

Por su parte, la udo tiene un oferta académica algo corta, pero bastante práctica, pues responde a las necesidades de la región ofreciendo al estudiante Margariteño licenciaturas en Turismo, planificación del turismo, ciencias aplicadas al mar y administración turística.... Sonará trillado pero estamos muy orgullosos de tener la mejor Escuela universitaria de turismo del país, lógicamente vivimos en una isla y debemos ser expertos en ello para subsistir. Además de ofrecer carreras más complejas y diversificadas, como informática, enfermería, biología, educación, tecnología alimenticia, estadística, y recientemente medicina.

Por otra parte, en la udo ocurren tantas cosas curiosas, que el estudiante no toma en serio la universidad como institución, pues podría ser un martes cualquiera y puede haber suelta una docena de chivos y vacas por el campus, y en la udone pasan cosas tan descabelladas que esto sería considerado normal.
La semana pasada había una multitud de gente reunida en la plaza del truco, y cuando nos acercamos, descubrimos que había una batalla de freestyle con los mejores raperos de la isla.... Fue muy divertido.

A decir verdad, me gusta mucho mi universidad. La mayoría de mis amigos provienen de acá, y mi vida gira entorno a la udo. Tuve la fortuna de encontrarle en un estado de recuperación, pues la crisis socioeconómica del país azotó muy fuerte a la universidad, y lo que hay de la udo, es apenas la sombra de lo que solía ser hace 20 años. Un ejemplo de esto es el comedor universitario, el cual solía ofrecer desayuno, almuerzo, merienda y cena a 5.000 estudiantes; y que ahora, solo abre 3 días por semana para repartir panes de azúcar con jugo de naranja.
A día de hoy se tiene data de más de 3.500 estudiantes activos, lo cual enorgullece mucho luego de los 800 estudiantes que se mantuvieron activos durante la época de crisis. Y es gracias a los movimientos estudiantiles que la universidad se está recuperando de la crisis.

Siendo francos, ver clases en las condiciones que vemos clases, nos clasifica directamente como tercermundistas: pocos son los salones con aire acondicionado, las paredes están por caerse, no hay seguridad, no hay proyectores para ver las clases, y la universidad no le provee nada al estudiante para que este pueda apoyarse durante sus estudios, inclusive, no hay suficientes pupitres para que todos los estudiantes puedan ver clases sentados, por lo cual debes estar antes de que comience la clase para que puedas asegurarte de conseguir un puesto donde sentarte y ver la clase, y si tenés suerte, conseguirás puesto cerca de la ventana y no morirás de calor.

Sin embargo, es por esto que estudiamos, una encuesta reveló que el 94% de los estudiantes que estudiamos actualmente en la udone, queremos dejar la universidad en mejores condiciones a como la encontramos, y es por esto que estudiamos, para ser profesionales y hacer de nuestra isla un lugar mejor.

First of all, I would like to extend a warm greeting to the entire @hivermargarita community.

More than beaches and fancy shopping malls, one of the things you can do on Margarita Island is study for a university degree at one of the best universities in the country, the Universidad de Oriente, better known as La UDO.... Yes, it sounds quite out of place given the nature of the community's posts, but there are few things as representative of Margarita's youth as the Udo Nueva Esparta.

Founded in 1958 in the city of Cumaná, Sucre state, the "tallest house in the East" has filled the eastern region of Venezuela with light and educational opportunities, but it wasn't until 1969 that a university extension was established on Margarita Island, Nueva Esparta state, and since then, it has provided quality education to the island's youth.

Getting into UDO is not easy. The university has its own meticulous methods for selecting its students, so getting into the university means bringing your papers and hoping for the miracle of being accepted. In my case, I am a second-semester student in the school of sciences. I'm just getting started. After graduating from high school, I spent almost a year waiting to enter the university because the degree program I wanted to enter is in high demand and can only be entered through the university's internal selection process. It was quite an odyssey to enroll, but here we are. The hard part is over, which was getting in. Now comes the worst part: finishing the degree.

It's important to mention that UDO is not organized into faculties or departments like other universities. The term "school" is used to refer to them.
In terms of infrastructure, we have six buildings (one for each school or faculty) and three research complexes, as well as a multipurpose court, an auditorium, a few cafeterias, and a common plaza that you must cross to get to the building where you have classes. This common space, known as "the plaza of ideas," or more correctly "the plaza of truco," is where students from different schools interact. It is known as the plaza of truco because it has a couple of small tables where students often play truco (a card game of chance and betting that is very characteristic of the region). and the professors, aware of this, seek to combat that concept of the plaza, and that is why they christened it "plaza de las ideas," a place where they give talks two days a week, where even I have had the pleasure of participating by giving talks as a misbehaving student.

The UDO brings together all kinds of people; it is probably the most diverse environment on the entire island of Margarita. There is a stereotype that most students are poor or from marginalized social classes, as it is the highest-quality public university, but this is not the case. The people at UDO are so varied that you could easily find gay people, prostitutes, posh people, black people, and Arabs all living together in the same student plaza. The environment is so diverse that, to be honest, I'm not very clear on the concept of "being normal" within the university. After all, it's a university, a place where you develop and discover yourself.

However, it is thanks to this multiculturalism that we have such an active student life. Thanks to student movements, there are all kinds of extracurricular activities, and that's why there are activities on campus every week. For example, every Friday we play the Udo Cup, which is the university's internal indoor soccer tournament, and the winner represents us against other universities at the end of the semester (spoiler: we always win). If soccer isn't your thing, you can join the softball team, dance classes, the university choir, or even sign up for theater classes.

For its part, the UDO has a somewhat limited academic offering, but it is quite practical, as it responds to the needs of the region by offering Margariteño students degrees in tourism, tourism planning, marine sciences, and tourism administration.... It may sound trite, but we are very proud to have the best tourism university in the country. Logically, we live on an island and must be experts in this field in order to survive. In addition to offering more complex and diversified degrees, such as computer science, nursing, biology, education, food technology, statistics, and recently medicine.

On the other hand, so many curious things happen at the UDO that students don't take the university seriously as an institution. It could be any given Tuesday, and a dozen goats and cows could be roaming around campus, and at the UDO, such crazy things happen that this would be considered normal.
Last week, there was a crowd of people gathered in the plaza, and when we got closer, we discovered that there was a freestyle battle with the best rappers on the island.... It was a lot of fun.

To tell you the truth, I really like my university. Most of my friends are from here, and my life revolves around the UDO. I was fortunate to find it in a state of recovery, as the country's socioeconomic crisis hit the university very hard, and what remains of the UDO is a mere shadow of what it used to be 20 years ago. An example of this is the university cafeteria, which used to offer breakfast, lunch, snacks, and dinner to 5,000 students; now, it only opens three days a week to distribute sugar bread and orange juice.
Today, there are more than 3,500 active students, which is a source of great pride after the 800 students who remained active during the crisis. And it is thanks to the student movements that the university is recovering from the crisis.

To be honest, seeing classes in the conditions we see them in classifies us directly as third world: few classrooms have air conditioning, the walls are falling down, there is no security, there are no projectors to watch the classes, and the university does not provide students with anything to support them during their studies. There are not even enough desks for all students to sit and watch classes, so you have to be there before class starts to make sure you get a seat to watch the class, and if you are lucky, you will get a seat near the window and not die of heat.

However, this is why we study. A survey revealed that 94% of students currently studying at UDONE want to leave the university in better condition than we found it, and this is why we study, to become professionals and make our island a better place.
