Recently I was thinking a lot about oppositions — rational and irrational, thoughts and feelings, mind and heart. So, I made a palindromic drawing.
It flips between brain and heart depending on how you look. But more than that, it’s about how those opposites aren’t really opposite. The mind might just be the heart turned upside down. Feeling can be a kind of deep thought, and thinking — a way to survive emotion.
The drawing also circles around another idea I keep coming back to: that what looks dead might not be. That inside us, even when we feel empty, there are still rivers: still movement, roots, connection. From that place, something can grow again. Even skeleton trees.
Inner life eventually spills outward. The grief, in time, becomes something else: a tree, a flower, something unnamed but alive.
Maybe this image isn’t really a heart or a brain. Maybe it’s a seed. And something new is just starting to grow.
