Frida Kahlo in Japan

I created this digital collage artwork titled Frida Kahlo in Japan. It was so much fun to make!

At first, I dreamed about designing a piece using Frida’s motif. In my dream, it wasn’t like this. It was just a typical image of her. She wasn’t wearing a kimono. However, once I started creating the piece, the image of her in a traditional Japanese kimono felt so natural and suited her so well!

I chose a background that looks like ancient Japanese art because she is in Japan in this piece. I wanted to use a nature-inspired background, but nothing too distracting, so I decided on a simple design.

I created the female figure with the help of AI, but I also did a lot of drawing myself. I used the outline of the lady’s shape, erased the original image, and redrew her to resemble Frida. This process was so interesting! It was really fun to draw her iconic hairstyle, makeup, and eyelashes, collaborating with the original AI image. I added some digital tattoo images on her neck and hand. The butterfly flying around her also became a tattoo on her neck. The "OM" tattoo on her hand is actually a henna design I once had on my shoulder.

Usually, I place my signature on the left or right side of my artwork, but this time I added it as an extra tattoo on her arm.

Next, I drew and colored the kimono dress. This part was especially enjoyable! The design is based on my own kimono, which was a gift from my father for my coming-of-age day. It was his last gift to me. I also wore it to my wedding. Traditionally, the long sleeves of a kimono are cut after marriage, but I didn’t want to alter such a beautiful piece, so I kept them as they were.

I wanted to incorporate the design of my kimono into the artwork. I drew a similar style of sash (obi), sash cord (obijime), and an accessory above the obi band called an obiage.

For the kimono itself, I combined elements of my kimono’s pattern with a Ryukyu (Okinawa)-style kimono. Since Frida is originally from Mexico, I found a connection between Mexican and Okinawan cultures, both are from warm climates and are very colourful, and women from both cultures often wear similar hairstyles. I thought Frida would look stunning in a Japanese kimono. Yes! She looks so cool in one!

I also added a peacock pattern on the collar, which wasn’t part of my original kimono. The earrings and headband I drew also have a slightly Japanese style. I didn’t want to change Frida’s fashion image too much, but I think a blend of Asian influence looks very cool on her. The butterflies flying around her eventually became part of her obi band. Flowers are also an important motif in this artwork.

It was a joy to draw and add the digital elements like her kimono and tattoo patterns, and to create this digital collage. I used some digital processing techniques, but not too much. I wanted to keep the handmade parts' texture in the drawing.
I'm also thinking about making an NFT version of it in the near future.

###　フリーダ・カーロ、日本にて

「フリーダ・カーロ、日本にて」というタイトルのデジタル・コラージュアートを作りました。

まず、フリーダ・カーロをモチーフにしたアートのデザインの夢をみたことから始まりました。夢の中の絵はこのアートとは違い、普段見たことのあるフリーダ・カーロのイメージで、着物はきていませんでした。ところが、いざデザインを初めて見ると、伝統的な着物を彼女に着せてみたらどうかなと思ったところ、しっくりきました！

背景も日本の昔ながらの美術的な背景にしたいと思いました。自然をモチーフにした感じで、うるさすぎず、シンプルな背景にしたかったのです。

まずはAIを使って女性のイメージを作り出しました。ただ、実際には自分で手書きで描かなければいけない部分が多かったです。女性の輪郭を利用して、詳細を消してフリーダ・カーロ風に描き直しました。この過程がとても楽しかったです！そのままだとあまり似ていなかったので、彼女のシンボルである髪型、メイク、お馴染みのつながった眉毛を元々のAIの画像に描き加えました。これは本人とは違う部分ですが、首と手の甲にデジタル画像でタトゥーを入れました。後ろに飛んでいる蝶々がこちらに飛んできて彼女の首のタトゥーになりました。手の甲の「オーム」のタトゥーは、実際に以前自分が肩に入れたことのあるヘナタトゥーです。

普段は自分のロゴサインを右下か左下に入れていますが、今回は彼女の腕に入れてタトゥー風にしました。

次に、着物を描いて色塗りをしました。この部分もまた楽しかったです。着物のデザインのベースとなったのは、父からの贈り物である成人式のときの着物です。この着物は父からの最後のプレゼントとなりました。結婚した時もこの着物を着ました。既婚者の女性は振袖着物の袖を短くするのが伝統ですが、わたしはどうしてもこの綺麗な着物の袖を着ることができず、そのままにして保管してあります。

自分の着物の要素をできるだけアートに取り入れました。帯と帯締めはなるべく自分のものに近づけるように描きました。帯揚げの素材も自分のに似せました。

着物のデザインは通常の伝統的な着物の形に加え、琉球着物的な要素も加えました。メキシコと沖縄の文化は似ているところがあるように感じます。両方とも温かい気候で、とても色鮮やかで伝統衣装を着る時の髪型が似ているような気がします。ですから、フリーダ・カーロが着物を着たら似合うのではないかと思ったのです。やっぱり！とっても似合っています。

わたしの着物にはそのような柄が入っていませんが、彼女感を出すために、着物の襟に孔雀柄を描き足しました。イヤリングと髪飾りは彼女のスタイルを崩さないようにしながらも、和風の飾りです。アジアのオリエンタルな感じがとてもしっくりきます。後ろを飛んでいる蝶々が着物の柄にもなりました。花もまた、とても重要なモチーフです。

デジタル画像で着物の柄をいくつか加え、手書きの部分と合わせてコラージュしました。いつも使用するような派手な色合いのデジタル加工はせずに、シンプルに手書きの部分の感じを活かせるような色合いに仕上げました。

そのうち、同じデザインでNFTバージョンも作りたいと考えています。
