Stop Genocide Now

I created this digital artwork called “Stop Genocide Now” the other day. I used an AI generator to create the human figure, added some hand-drawn elements, inserted digital images, and applied digital processing.

Let me explain why I decided to create this piece. I usually focus on themes like nature, humanity, health, animals, and life in my artwork. I’ve never depicted direct images of war, such as battlefields, bombs, weapons, or fighter jets, before. However, I felt that, as a person who is originally from a country that was damaged by nuclear weapons and lost the war, I should express something about war.

My grandparents experienced the war when they were young. On my father’s side, they never shared their stories with me, but my maternal grandparents did.

Actually, my grandfather didn’t want to talk about it much. When I was learning about the war, I read many books and comics, and I watched documentaries. Still, I wanted to hear about it directly from my grandparents because I realized they were born before the war. My grandmother shared details, how her neighbour died after being shot by an airplane, and how she worked in a military factory. But my grandfather stayed mostly silent.

One day, though, he finally opened up and told me how he survived and how he lost his friends. It was a powerful and heartbreaking story. I couldn’t ask many questions because I was in shock. I’ve never forgotten the expression on his face when he told me.

I’ve never experienced war on the battlefield, but how many wars has the world seen since World War II? I used to believe we should never, ever have war anywhere on this planet, but that belief has been shaken.

I’m not here to talk about history, race, culture, or the complex issues behind wars. What I can’t stand is witnessing children, the elderly, soldiers, and civilians dying every day. On top of that, there's a lack of food and clean water to sustain life. Through this artwork, I wanted to express the urgent message that we must stop genocide.

The central figure in the piece is an unknown being visiting from space, accompanied by others. Their hearts ache as they watch us from above.

Finally, they come down to Earth during an attack, as jets fly overhead, and they deliver a powerful message.
“Stop Genocide Now!”
Despite the violence and weapons, they are never defeated. Their message reaches us with great force.

On the battlefield, there are small children and babies held in their mothers’ arms, looking up at the visitors.

It may sound like a science fiction story, but sadly, this is our reality. Brave people around the world are trying to stop this tragedy, but for some reason, we rarely hear about them in mainstream media.

That’s why I want to use blogs and social media to share artwork like this. I truly want to stop the harm being done to people and our Earth, any further.

ストップ・ジェノサイド・ナウ

先日、このデジタルアートを創りました。タイトルは「 ストップ・ジェノサイド・ナウ」です。AIで人間の形をいくつか形成して、手書きで絵を加え、デジタル画像を加え、全体にデジタル加工を施しました。

なぜこのアートをつくろうと考えたか…。日頃は自然界、人間性、健康、動物、人生などをテーマにしたアートをつくっています。こんなふうに直接的な戦地、爆弾、武器、戦闘機などを描いた戦争アートをつくったことはこれまでにありません。ところが、世界で唯一原爆被害を受けた国で生まれた者として、戦争に関するアートを作ろうと決めました。

わたしの祖父母たちは全員戦争経験者です。父方の祖父母に戦争の具体的な話を聞いたことはありませんでした。母方の祖父母の戦争経験は聞いたことがあります。

しかし、祖父はあまり戦争の具体的な話をしたがりませんでした。戦争について学んでいる時、わたしはたくさんの本や漫画を読み、戦争のドキュメンタリーなどを観ました。でも、やはり直接祖父母の経験を聞きたいと思いました。祖父母は戦争の少し前に生まれました。祖母はいかにして近所の人が戦闘機に打たれて亡くなったか、祖母が軍事工場で義務として働かされたかなど、かなり詳細な経験を語ってくれました。ところが、祖父は沈黙を破ることはありませんでした。

ある日、祖父がはじめてわたしに戦争経験を語ってくれました。どんなふうに生き延び、どのように仲間を失ったか…。たいへん重みのある悲しい話でした。あまりにショックで、たくさん質問ができませんでした。その時の祖父の顔を忘れることはできません。

わたし自身は戦地で直接戦争を経験したことがありませんが、第二次世界大戦以降、これまでに何度世界の戦争を目撃してきたことでしょう。幼い頃は、戦争は２度としてはいけないと信じていましたが、そんな願いはまったく届いていないようです。

今回は、歴史、人種、文化やその他の戦争問題について語るためにこのブログを書いているのではありません。もうこれ以上、子どもたち、老人、兵隊や市民が戦争で亡くなっていくのを目撃するのは耐えられません。さらに、食糧不足や生活水の汚染問題まで浮き彫りになっています。一刻も早く大量虐殺を止めるべきだと思います。

アートの真ん中に宇宙からやってきた未確認生物がいます。それは、仲間とやってきました。彼らは上の世界から地球の世界の様子を見て、心を痛めていました。

ついに、彼らは戦時中の戦闘機が飛び交う最中にやってきて、我々に力強いメッセージを送ります。

「大量虐殺を今すぐやめなさい！」
武器による残虐な攻撃にも関わらず、決して負けない姿勢を示しています。彼らのメッセージは大きな力とともに我々に届きました。

戦地では、小さな子どもたちや赤ちゃんを抱いた母親たちが彼らの姿を見上げています。

SF映画の１コマのように聞こえてしまうかもしれませんが、これがわたしたちの現実です。世界中で勇敢な方たちが戦争と虐殺を止めようと必死になってくれています。ところが、そんな様子が主なメィディアで報道されることは滅多にないのです。

ですから、ブログやSNSを通して少しでも共有していきたいと思います。人々や地球のためにも、これ以上傷つけるのは終わりにしていただきたいです。
