A fact of life that cannot be contested by anyone and no advanced technology of the now and the future can make this possible, you cannot see your own face directly with your own eyes. Other people will see it in a way you'll never know.
It's pretty obvious, your eyes are part of your face, so you cannot look at yourself fully, that is, including your face.
There are some that have actually been curious about seeing their own face. Thousands of years ago, ancient mirrors like a very polished metal is what was used only to see reflections. People in those times tried to see themselves in water or shiny surfaces before the mirrors were invented.
There have been philosophical debates as to whether a human being could ever truly see themselves.
You could try deep imaginations but it'll only give you perceptions of your face not a view of your real face directly as you could see other people.
Mirrors only show a reflected image of your face and the thing about mirrors is that mirror image reverse left and right, so they are not exactly the real view.
We use phones and cameras to take photos, selfies and videos but they only show recorded versions of our face. The photos can also flip or distort your face slightly so it's still not hundred percent the same thing.
There have been some studies on the human brains which showed that people actually recognize their own faces faster than unknown faces. Researchers have also used eye tracking experiments which revealed unique patterns when a person is looking at their face. Your pupil reactions and the small eye movements change when you see your own self.
A subliminal studies also proves that your brain notices your face even without conscious thought.
But that's as far as the research and discoveries go, no one has a way of see their face with their own eye balls directly without the use of a mirror or camera or reflective surface.
People usually prefer mirror images because that is what they are used to seeing. Some argue that they look better in mirror images than camera, so are more comfortable with the mirror images.
Does a mirror or photo of yourself count as real seeing?
We've had a couple of philosophers like Plato and Descartes who had their own views with regards to self perception in their writings. They agreed the mind and self image are separate from direct sight. Self perception is biased and you see yourself differently than others do.
Your mental image of your face and yourself is only built from mirrors, photos and memory. So even in dreams, if you see yourself, the face you see is imagined, not a true direct view of who you really are.
It's a fact and regardless of the argument, it always remains a fact. You would think that future technology could do something about this but theoretically speaking, it's not possible.
Unless perhaps, a technology can take your eyes out of the socket and keep your vision on, and direct your own eyes to your face. Even if that happens, it still gives you a direct image of your face without eyeballs.
So it is a universal truth, no one, in history or today, has ever truly seen their face directly with their own eyes and no one will get to see it.
Stumbled on this interesting YouTube Video though, I'll leave you with the same question.
- Is a mirror image the same as how others see you?
