Peregrinación a San Pablo Extramuros - Pilgrimage to St. Saint Paul Outside the Walls (ENG-ESP)

Como parte del Jubileo, visitamos la Basílica de San Pablo Extramuro, fui con mi grupo misionero Caracas Peregrina y, aunque ya habíamos recorrido las otras basílicas, esta experiencia fue distinta. Se encuentra más alejada del Vaticano y el trayecto hasta allí se siente como una verdadera peregrinación.

As part of the Jubilee, we visited the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls. I went with my missionary group, Caracas Peregrina, and although we had already visited the other basilicas, this experience was different. It is further away from the Vatican, and the journey there feels like a true pilgrimage.

San Pablo es conocido como el apóstol de los paganos. No formó parte de los doce primeros discípulos, pero su conversión marcó un antes y un después. Antes perseguía a los cristianos, hasta que tuvo aquel encuentro decisivo con Cristo camino a Damasco. Desde entonces, dedicó su vida a anunciar el Evangelio por todas partes. Por eso tantas de sus cartas figuran en la Biblia: su fe era misión, movimiento, viaje.

Saint Paul is known as the apostle of the Gentiles. He was not one of the first twelve disciples, but his conversion marked a turning point. He had previously persecuted Christians, until he had that decisive encounter with Christ on the road to Damascus. From then on, he devoted his life to spreading the Gospel everywhere. That is why so many of his letters appear in the Bible: his faith was mission, movement, journey.

La basílica lleva su nombre porque allí se encuentra su tumba. Se llama “Extramuros” porque, en tiempos del Imperio Romano, este lugar quedaba fuera de las murallas de la ciudad, en la zona donde solían enterrarse a los condenados y mártires. Pablo murió decapitado por su fe, y sus restos fueron colocados aquí.

The basilica bears his name because his tomb is located there. It is called “Extramuros” because, during the Roman Empire, this place was outside the city walls, in the area where the condemned and martyrs were usually buried. Paul died beheaded for his faith, and his remains were placed here.

Al llegar, lo primero que me impresionó fue la amplitud del jardín y el atrio que rodea la basílica. La tradición afirma que allí reposan los restos del apóstol, aunque más allá de lo que pueda comprobarse históricamente, la fe se percibe viva en ese lugar. Recuerdo que algo que me llamó la atención fue el hecho de ver un sarcófago, donde se veían unos huesos del pie, si bien, no correspondían a la tumba de San Pablo, ese detalle, tan sencillo y frágil me conmovió.

Upon arrival, the first thing that struck me was the size of the garden and the atrium surrounding the basilica. Tradition holds that the remains of the apostle are buried there, and regardless of what can be historically verified, faith is palpable in that place. I remember that something that caught my attention was the sight of a sarcophagus, where some bones from a foot could be seen. Although they did not belong to the tomb of St. Paul, that detail, so simple and fragile, moved me.

Otra imagen inolvidable es la serie de retratos de todos los Papas que rodea el espacio: desde San Pedro hasta el Papa Francisco. El retrato actual es sorprendentemente realista, casi como si estuviera allí con nosotros. Ver esa continuidad me hizo pensar en la historia que heredamos y en cómo la fe se transmite de generación en generación.

Another unforgettable image is the series of portraits of all the popes that surround the space: from Saint Peter to Pope Francis. The current portrait is surprisingly realistic, almost as if he were there with us. Seeing that continuity made me think about the history we have inherited and how faith is passed down from generation to generation.

Al salir, nos encontramos con una pequeña feria organizada por la Familia Paulina, nos recibían personas de distintos países, recuerdo un sacerdote italiano, una hermana italiana que hablaba español y otra hermana asiática. Con ellas hicimos una dinámica hermosa: leímos juntos el Himno de la Caridad y reflexionamos sobre lo que significa amar verdaderamente en lo cotidiano.

As we left, we came across a small fair organized by the Pauline Family. We were welcomed by people from different countries. I remember an Italian priest, an Italian sister who spoke Spanish, and another Asian sister. We did a beautiful activity with them: we read the Hymn of Charity together and reflected on what it means to truly love in everyday life.

Fue un momento sencillo, pero profundo, a veces, lo más valioso en una peregrinación no es lo monumental, sino lo humano, por otro lado, todos dejamos un legado, aunque no siempre lo percibamos. No solo los apóstoles o los papas, también nosotros, en los jóvenes que acompañamos, en las misas que animamos, en cada conversación sencilla.

Ese día me quedé pensando en Pablo, en su camino, en su misión, y en cómo su vida continúa tocando la nuestra. Comprendí que el legado no se mide en monumentos, sino en las vidas que acompañamos, en la fe que compartimos, en la palabra que sembramos, incluso cuando parece pequeña.

It was a simple but profound moment. Sometimes, the most valuable thing on a pilgrimage is not the monumental, but the human. On the other hand, we all leave a legacy, even if we don't always realize it. Not only the apostles or the popes, but also us, in the young people we accompany, in the Masses we celebrate, in every simple conversation.

That day, I kept thinking about Paul, his journey, his mission, and how his life continues to touch ours. I understood that legacy is not measured in monuments, but in the lives we accompany, in the faith we share, in the word we sow, even when it seems small.
