Hey everyone, I hope you had a good start to the new week and maybe some of you already have plans for the week! In my new post I would like to share something about a travel experience and am happy if you like it.
In my last post I have already shared something about my trip to Volendam and already mentioned that I have combined this trip with Marken and I can recommend to every visitor to the area to combine both places. It's a good idea to connect both and from Volendam you can either take the ferry which takes you to the destination in about 30 minutes or alternatively you can also make a tour by bike to explore the landscape even more. Marken is a relatively small town and less than 2000 people live here and for the formation of the village fishing was essential and for centuries, this ensured the maintenance of the people until it was changed during the 20th century. If you want to see aspects of the traditional Netherlands, you are definitely in the right place here and whether it is architecture or just the morale of the inhabitants, everything seems very traditional.
Unfortunately I didn't notice much of it, but someone told me that people walk around in traditional clothes on certain holidays, but I could still see the clothes when I visited the museum. Shortly after I arrived, I first sat down in one of the restaurants at the harbour which offer traditional food and the view of these restaurants on the harbour and the sea is simply incredible. Somewhat hidden next to the harbour can also be seen some texts which tell the history of Marken, but I can only recommend every visitor to take a look at the museum which is relatively small but with the extensive collection highlights the culture of Marken very well. The museum is located about 10 minutes away from the harbour and on the way I have already walked past some traditional buildings which have their own and special style and some of the buildings of the village are not without reason under monument protection.
Although the town is very small, it has attracted a lot of attention in the past and even on an international level because some well-known artists have visited it and in addition, the royal family of the Netherlands has visited the village more often in the past. Even if it seems as if everything is in a good condition, this was not always the case because in the past there were often environmental disasters which even had the consequence that a large part was destroyed a few decades ago, which was not only a great tragedy for the inhabitants but also brought some problems from an economic point of view. Most of the inhabitants of the village also concentrated on fishing at that time while the women led even more the old life and took care of the household or the family and it's very interesting to be able to learn more about this traditional life of which many traces can be found in the museum.
Otherwise there was not much open on this day what there is to visit and I decided to go to the lighthouse which is slightly outside of Marken and can be reached in about 30 minutes, but the longer way should not deter anyone because it leads through a breathtaking nature and past a stream where I could even see some people who have pursued the hobby of fishing. Nearby there are also many farms and animals to see and a highlight is of course also the typical flatland and arrived at the lighthouse people also have the opportunity to go swimming and enjoy the breathtaking landscape. The lighthouse itself cannot be visited because it's actually privately owned, but people like me have noticed some problems when it comes to the water supply and they have to buy drinking water because there is no flowing drinking water there, but the electricity is no problem. People have probably fulfilled a dream to live so secluded in a lighthouse and for me the visit was also very interesting before I decided to walk back to the ferry to reach one of the last and this tip I can also give to visitors to keep the plan in mind, since the ferries only run at a certain time.
Thank you very much for stopping by and I hope you could learn something new and like my post! I captured these pictures with my Sony Alpha 6000 plus 55-210 mm lens.

Thanks a lot for the kind words
I reckon the food in the restaurants must be very good!
It's as if time stopped there and the museum looks very nice
The lighthouse is cool tool and too bad for the environmental disasters!
Yes, not only the location but also the food was very good.
Cool review! I've recently visited Volendam myself and Marken in the past too. But I live in the Netherlands myself.
Where are you from?
Great! How did you like it and what time were you there? I would also have liked to see the tulips, which of course is one of the highlights. I also heard that Zandvoort is supposed to be very beautiful! I was only there for a week but think I used the time well, do you have any insider tips? Happy start to the weekend
Such a peaceful place. The traditional houses and quiet streets make it look like something out of a storybook.
Thank you so much for the feedback
You're welcome 🙏
