A visit to a historic place - the Venice of Szczecin

Hello everyone!

In this post, I'd like to take you to one of the most interesting places in Szczecin, especially from a photography perspective. I had a bit of a dilemma about which community to post this in. Ultimately, I chose the travel community Worldmappin. My main concern was that the presented place is constantly changing, and such views won't be available to new visitors. However, the deciding factor was that I don't live in Szczecin myself; for me, this was a trip to the city.

Witam wszystkich!

W tym wpisie chciałbym Was zabrać do jednego z ciekawszych miejsc w Szczecinie, zwłaszcza pod kątem fotografii. Miałem mały dylemat, w której społeczności umieścić ten wpis. Ostatecznie wybrałem podróżniczy Worldmappin. Głównym tematem moich rozmyślań było to, że prezentowane miejsce się zmienia i takie widoki nie będą dostępne dla kolejnych osób. Natomiast przeważyło to, że sam nie mieszkam w Szczecinie, była to dla mnie podróż do tego miasta.

Szczecin's Venice, seen from the small bridge connecting the waterfront with Jaskółcza Island. This site is located on the banks of the Oder River, next to the Main Railway Station on Kolumba Street. Access to the bridge is through a gate and a passage between two buildings. I visited this site in 2023, but this gate was later closed. There's a second bridge on the station side, but I don't know if it's also accessible to non-residents. Currently, the only way to view these buildings from the water is by kayak or boat.

Szczecińska Wenecja widziana z małego mostu łączącego nabrzeże z wyspą Jaskółczą. Miejsce to położone jest nad brzegiem Odry obok Głównego Dworca PKP przy ulicy Kolumba. Wejście na mostek jest przez bramę oraz przesmyk między dwoma budynkami. Ja odwiedziłem to miejsce w 2023 roku, później ta brama została zamknięta. Od strony dworca jest drugi mostek, ale nie wiem czy i on nie jest dostępny dla osób, które nie są użytkownikami tych posesji. Prawdopodobnie aktualnie jedynym sposobem na obejrzenie tych budynków od strony wody jest kajak lub łódka.

What has changed since 2023, when I visited this place with my camera without any problems? After many years, a developer was found who decided to renovate and rebuild some of these buildings. Construction work is currently underway there to create almost 300 apartments.

Co się zmieniło od 2023 roku, kiedy ja bez przeszkód odwiedziłem to miejsce z aparatem? Po wielu latach znalazł się deweloper, który postanowił wyremontować i przebudować część tych budynków. Aktualnie trwają tam prace budowlane nad stworzeniem prawie 300 apartamentów.

The red brick buildings were constructed at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Tenement houses and a alkohol and yeast factory were built here.

Budynki z czerwonej cegły powstały na przełomie XIX i XX wieku. Powstały tutaj kamienice oraz wytwórnia alkoholi i drożdży.

The origins of this place on the Oder River date back to the Middle Ages, when its inhabitants engaged in fishing and small-scale trade. In the following centuries, the Venice of Szczecin grew and became an increasingly important trading center. Its heyday came somewhat earlier, in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Początki tego miejsca nad Odrą sięgają średniowiecza, kiedy mieszkańcy tych terenów zajmowali się rybołówstwem i drobnym handlem. W kolejnych wiekach Szczecińska Wenecja rozrastała się i stawała się coraz większym ośrodkiem handlowym. Największy rozkwit tego miejsca przypadł nieco wcześniej, na XVIII i XIX wiek.

I planned to visit this place because of photos like these. I'd seen similar ones taken by other photographers and wanted to take some myself. The weather cooperated, allowing me to capture shots with beautiful reflections of the buildings on the water.

Ja to miejsce planowałem odwiedzić ze względu na takie zdjęcia. Widziałem podobne wykonane przez innych fotografów i chciałem sam takie wykonać. Dopisała mi przy tym pogoda, dzięki czemu mogłem wykonać ujęcia z pięknym odbiciem budynków na wodzie.

I took most of the photos from Jaskółcza Island. However, there are no similar buildings on the island itself. The photos and views of the island on Google Maps are currently out of date and differ significantly from reality.

Większość zdjęć wykonałem z Wyspy Jaskółczej. Na samej wyspie nie ma natomiast tego typu zabudowy. Zdjęcia i widok na wyspę na Google Maps są obecnie nieaktualne i mocno różnią się od rzeczywistości.

I've also been to Venice, Italy, and I know how much of a difference there is between the real Venice and the local one in Szczecin. Nevertheless, this one also has its charm and was worth a visit. I wonder what it will look like in a few years after the renovations are completed.

Byłem również we Włoszech w Wenecji i wiem jak duża jest różnica między prawdziwą Wenecją, a tą lokalną szczecińską. Niemniej ta również ma swój urok i była warta odwiedzenia. Ciekawe jak to będzie wyglądało za kilka lat po zakończeniu przebudowy.
