St Martin's Cathedral, Bratislava

Hello everyone!

Last week, I featured the monastery in Tihany, which is historically linked to one of the Hungarian kings. This post will focus on a church that is historically much more important to Hungary, even though it is located in the capital of Slovakia. St. Martin's Cathedral in Bratislava was built in the 14th century in the Gothic style, but its ceremonial consecration did not take place until 1452. The church is located on the southwest edge of the Old Town on the main street, Staromestská Street.

Tydzień temu przedstawiałem klasztor w Tihany, który historycznie powiązany jest z jednym z królów węgierskich. W tym poście będzie kościół, który historycznie jest dużo ważniejszy dla Węgier, chociaż znajduje się w stolicy Słowacji. Katedra Św. Marcina w Bratysławie powstała w XIV wieku w stylu gotyckim, natomiast uroczysta konsekracja odbyła się dopiero w 1452. Kościół położony jest na południowo-zachodnim skraju starego miasta przy głównej ulicy Staromiejskiej ("Staromestská").

Widok na średniowieczne mury miasta z bastionem, w tle widoczna jest katedra oraz coś co mnie irytuje podczas zwiedzania z aparatem, czyli wszelkie remonty w sezonie turystycznym.

After walking along the walls a bit further, I was able to take a photo without scaffolding or cranes. Of course, the church's 85-meter-high tower stands out, having been rebuilt in the 19th century after the previous one burned down in 1833.

Po przejściu murami kawałek dalej mogłem zrobić zdjęcie bez rusztowań czy dźwigów. Oczywiście wyróżnia się wieża kościoła o wysokości 85 m, która została odbudowana w XIX wieku po pożarze poprzedniej w 1833 roku.

There was a certain inconvenience to visiting this place with a group of people. Everyone has their own pace of sightseeing, and everyone is interested in slightly different things.

W zwiedzaniu tego miejsca dała znać pewna niedogodność podczas zwiedzania w kilka osób. Każdy ma własne tempo zwiedzania i każdego interesuje trochę coś innego.

When we were visiting Bratislava, my friends moved ahead quite quickly, and I had to chase them. Normally, I'd walk around a cathedral like this with my camera, but in this case, I limited myself to the north side.

W przypadku zwiedzania Bratysławy kumple dość szybko poszli przodem i musiałem ich gonić. Normalnie taką katedrę obszedłbym dookoła z aparatem, w tym przypadku ograniczyłem się tylko do strony północnej.

The entrance to the cathedral is from the north. Even though I was behind my friends, I decided to go inside for a moment.

Wejście do katedry od północnej strony. Pomimo, że byłem w tyle za kumplami to postanowiłem na chwilę wejść do środka.

Why is this church important in Hungarian history? Because from 1563 to 1830, it served as the coronation church for Hungarian kings. Eleven kings and eight queens were crowned here. Subsequent coronations took place in Budapest.

Dlaczego ten kościół jest ważny dla historii Węgier? Ponieważ w latach 1563–1830 był to kościół koronacyjny dla królów węgierskich. Odbyło się tutaj 11 koronacji królów i 8 królowych. Późniejsze koronacje odbywały się w Budapeszcie.

The interior of the church is a mixture of different styles: Gothic, Neo-Gothic, Baroque.

Wnętrze kościoła to mieszanka różnych stylów: gotyku, neogotyku, baroku.

Inside the church there are several chapels from different eras.

Wewnątrz kościoła znajduje się kilka kaplic z różnych epok.

The visible stained glass windows were created in the second half of the 19th century.

Widoczne witraże powstały w drugiej połowie XIX wieku.

To be honest, I didn't find this cathedral particularly impressive, either from the outside or the inside, as I've seen more impressive ones, especially in Italy. However, I wanted to see it for its history.

Będąc szczerym, to ani z zewnątrz ani z wewnątrz ta katedra nie okazała się dla mnie szczególnie imponująca, ponieważ widziałem bardziej okazałe, zwłaszcza we Włoszech. Jednak chciałem ją zobaczyć ze względu na historię.

One last look behind and it's time to go on looking for friends in the city center.

Ostatnie spojrzenie za siebie i trzeba iść dalej szukać znajomych w centrum miasta.
