The miniseries "Uncontrolables" recently premiered on Netflix, and the reason I watched it was because the lead actress was Toni Collette, whom I greatly admire and can't stop watching any projects she chooses to participate in. She captivated me in the film Heredetary, which is in my Top 10 favorite horror films and where her performance carried the entire weight. In this series, she also stood out with a masterful performance as the main character of Evelyn Wade, a disturbing (to say the least) director of a correctional center for young people with behavioral problems.
"Uncontrolables" addresses themes such as mind control, manipulation, and domination over young people in an institution ostensibly for rehabilitation or behavioral correction; which turned out to be quite shady, a sixth form with marked ideals and control over even the entire town population. This topic is not new, in the 60s, 70s and 80s it was a very chosen subject for the seventh art, because really during those years mind control or MK Ultra was used a lot, as experiments by the main powers and also by the different sects that were born at that time.
Recientemente se estrenó en Netflix, la miniserie "Incontrolables" y la razón por la que la vi fue porque la actriz principal era Toni Collette, a quien admiro mucho y no puedo dejar de ver los proyectos en los que elige participar. Ella me cautivó en la película Heredetary que está en mi Top 10 películas de terror preferidas y donde su actuación soportó todo el peso, y en ésta serie igualmente destacó con una interpretación magistral, en el personaje principal de Evelyn Wade, una inquietante (por decir lo menos) directora de un centro correccional de jóvenes con problemas de conducta.
"Incontrolables" aborda temas como el como el control mental, la manipulación y la dominación sobre jóvenes en una institución aparentemente de rehabilitación o corrección de la conducta; que resultó ser bastante turbia, una sexta con marcados ideales y control sobre incluso toda la población del pueblo. Este tema no es nuevo, en los años 60´s, 70´s y 80´s fue un tema muy elegido para el séptimo arte, porque realmente durante esos años se utilizó mucho col control mental o MK Ultra, como experimentos por parte de las principales potencias y también por las diferentes sectas que nacieron en esa época.
Alex (a trans man) and his pregnant wife, Laura, move to Tall Pines, her hometown, after Alex loses his job and struggles with his family. Alex works as a police officer in this town and quickly becomes interested in investigating some strange situations in the town, where he notices odd behavior among its residents and also about young people entering Tall Pines Academy, where his wife also attended in her youth.
We are also introduced to Abbie and Leila, two rebellious young people who, due to different circumstances, are forced into the Academy and discover that the "therapies" are actually a process of mental manipulation and subjugation that seeks to erase their individuality, leading them to plan an escape that could expose the disturbing truth about Tall Pines and the entire town.
The protagonist is the Headmistress of Tall Pines Academy, Evely (Toni Collette), who controls everything, including what happens in the town. She hides deep and sinister secrets involving sectarian control and youth abuse.
Plot Objective:
Alex helps young women Abbie and Leila discover and expose everything happening at Tall Pines Academy and in the town. Will they succeed?
Alex (hombre trans) y Laura su esposa embarazada, se mudan al pueblo natal de ella, llamado Tall Pines, luego de que Alex perdiera su empleo y tuviese problemas de donde venían. En este pueblo Alex trabajará como Policía, y rápidamente se interesa en investigar algunas situaciones extrañas en el pueblo donde percibe comportamientos extraños en sus habitantes y también sobre jóvenes que entran en la Academia Tall Pines, donde por cierto también estuvo su esposa en su juventud.
También nos presentan a Abbie y Leila, dos jóvenes rebeldes que por diferentes circunstancias entran forzadamente en dicha Academia y descubren que las "terapias" son en realidad un proceso de manipulación mental y sometimiento que busca borrar su individualidad, llevándolas a planear una fuga que podría exponer la perturbadora verdad de Tall Pines y de todo el pueblo.
La protagonista es la Directora de la Academia Tall Pines, Evely (Toni Collette) quien controla todo, incluso lo que sucede en el pueblo, esconde secretos profundos y siniestros que involucran un control sectario y abusos a jóvenes.
Objetivo de la Trama:
Que Alex ayude a las jóvenes Abbie y Leila, descubran y expongan todo lo que ocurre en la Academia Tall Pines y en el pueblo. ¿Lo lograran?
But... "Uncontrolables" isn't just a psychological thriller that manages to keep us on edge, telling us about Tall Pines Academy and the whole theme of mind control over young people through a strict structure of order, emotional manipulation, manipulation and creation of false memories, etc. I thought that was a good narrative for a series, and although there are cult-like institutions with those characteristics, even religious institutions, I think the MANIPULATION OF THE MASSES through social media, programs, or series like this one, where in "Second Plane," they are manipulating us with other objectives, is a more up-to-date and realistic theme.
Clearly, I could perceive from the first moment with the character of "Alex" who is a trans man with a pregnant woman, and in the series he is incorporated into the different environments in a quite natural way, and I really think that in real life that is fine, we should not exclude or discriminate, but... then, I see the entire series and these characters with sexual orientation or attraction towards their same gender, it is repeated over and over again, and it really caught my attention.
Pero... "Incontrolables" no es solo un thriller psicológico que logra mantenernos en tensión, que nos cuenta sobre la Academia Tall Pines, y todo el tema del control mental sobre los jóvenes a través de una estricta estructura de órden, manipulación emocional, manipulación y creación de recuerdos falsos, etc. Eso me pareció bien como narrativa para una serie, y a pesar de que si hay instituciones de sectas con esas características, incluso instituciones religiosas; creo que es un tema más actualizado y realista la MANIPULACIÓN DE LAS MASAS a través de las redes sociales, programas o series como ésta, donde en "Segundo Plano" nos están manipulando con otros objetivos.
Claramente, pude percibir desde el primer momento con el personaje de "Alex" quien es un hombre trans con una mujer embarazada, y en la serie es incorporado en los diferente ambientes de forma bastante natural, y realmente creo que eso en la vida real está bien, no hay que excluir ni discriminar, pero... luego, veo toda la serie y estos personajes con orientación sexual o atracción hacia su mismo género, se repite una y otra vez, y realmente me llamó mucho la atención.
The presence of men in the series is absurdly made invisible. They're there only to make things happen, as completely secondary characters, all the protagonists are women, even when they're unnecessarily present, as in the case of Alex.
Men aren't relevant to the plot, and this really bothered me a lot. It's not necessary to manipulate us like that, in a series about mental control and manipulation, and they do exactly that to the viewer. I repeat, I have no problem with the orientation of other people; that's something to be respected, but... why make the male characters invisible like this?
La presencia de los hombres en la serie es absurdamente invisibilizada, ellos están ahí solo para que algunas cosas pasen, como personajes totalmente secundarios, todas las protagonistas mujeres, incluso cuando innecesariamente como en el caso de Alex están presentes.

Well, as for the series' plot, it certainly captures the attention of the various events, and one can empathize with some of the characters. Toni Collette's performance is masterful, as always. Some episodes, while not filler, felt like they had a different direction. They fell a bit short in terms of pacing. For now, it was a good series, and at times, it was quite "X-rated."
They haven't said if there will be a second season; apparently not. But there are characters who have been hinted at, like Wyatt Turner, played by Patrick J. Adams, who said he was a graduate of Tall Pines Academy, only to no longer appear in the series. And so on, several characters who could have continued the series, despite the end of this first season.
Bueno, en cuanto a la trama de la serie, ciertamente logra la atención a los diferentes eventos, uno logra empatizar con algunos personajes, la actuación de Toni Collette es magistral como siempre. Algunos capítulos aunque no fueron de relleno, se sintieron como con una Dirección diferente, caen un poco en cuanto a ritmo, de momento era una buena serie, y por momentos era bastante "X".
No han dicho si va a haber una segunda temporada, aparentemente no. Pero hay personajes que se asomaron como el Wyatt Turner, interpretado por Patrick J. Adams, que dijo que él era egresado de la Academia Tall Pines, y luego no sale más en la serie. Y así varios personajes que pudieran dar continuidad a la serie, a pesar del final de ésta primera temporada.
Toni Collette's performance, as I mentioned, is another masterful one, portraying Principal Evelyn Wade, the founder of Tall Pines Academy. She manages to encapsulate the essence of a cult leader, with a superficial warmth and disturbing kindness, the perfect disguise for the relentless manipulation and evil she hides. The actress displays impressive skills in her performance, from her controlled movements, tone of voice, and fleeting microexpressions—an icy stare or a forced smile—that reveal the character's true predatory nature. She's a 10/10.
Each episode had its own rhythm, and although there were two episodes toward the end that fell somewhat flat, there were no filler episodes; each one presented a developed situation.
The characters made intelligent decisions, trying to resolve the situation from each perspective, to the point where one can empathize with them.
La Actuación de Toni Collette, como mencioné es otra actuación magistral, interpretando a la Directora Evelyn Wade, la fundadora de la Academia Tall Pines, porque logra encapsular la esencia de una líder de culto, con una calidez superficial y la amabilidad inquietante, es el disfraz perfecto para la manipulación implacable y la maldad que esconde. La actriz muestra recursos impresionantes en su interpretación, desde sus movimientos controlados, tono de voz, micro expresiones fugaces—una mirada gélida o una sonrisa demasiado forzada—que revelan la verdadera naturaleza depredadora del personaje, ella es un 10/10.
Cada capítulo tuvo su propio ritmo, y aunque hacia el final hubo dos que cayeron algo, no hubo capítulos de relleno, cada uno nos trajo una situación que fue desarrollada.
Los personajes tomaron decisiones inteligentes, tratando de resolver la situación desde cada perspectiva, al punto que uno logra empatizar con ellos.

Recomiendo que veas la serie con una actitud analítica y atenta a los detalles. El núcleo narrativo o tema central es muy interesante, como la manipulación psicológica y emocional, la forma en que la academia logra anular la personalidad de los jóvenes hasta la inquietante técnica de implantar recuerdos falsos.
Sin embargo, te invito a prestar especial atención a los mensajes de segundo plano que la serie introduce, y que te crees tu propio juicio sobre si estos elementos narrativos se integran de manera orgánica o si parecen forzados dentro del contexto de la trama.
