It was family day at my wife's work and she wanted to take her parents along to see where she works and what she does - not that she can really show what she does like that. But still, it was the thought that counts. They enjoyed the factory tour though, especially her dad, who worked his career in the Finnish paper industry.
Plus, there were hotdogs.
Smallsteps and I didn't do the tour, since we have done it before, and instead she went on the jumping castle and patted the alpacas. Last year they had bunnies - she liked them a lot too. I think it is a nice thing for the employees to have a chance to show their place of work, though for the kids it makes work seem like a lot of fun and candy.
And alpacas.

After we dropped off her parents home again, we went to Ikea to pick up some lavender I saw there yesterday, while we were getting some things for Smallsteps' bedroom. Block-out curtains being the main thing - because the sun rises and shines into her room at 3am at the moment.
So, I bought some lavender.
And Smallsteps chose a pineapple for her room. I don't know when pineapple's became indoor plants, but here we are, owners of a tiny little pineapple plant - that will never be edible, as far as I know. Still, she is happy with it, even though she discovered after that it needs a bit more care than she had anticipated. Which is no surprise, considering it is a tropical fruit trying to grow in one of the coldest countries on earth.
She took great care picking out the right pot for it once we got home.
And when I got home, I planted my lavender (into a large pot) straight away too. I was hoping to actually spend some time outside enjoying the garden, but it is so bloody windy, it just isn't pleasant. Hopefully it means a nice warm change is coming and the weather is good enough to grill properly, without wearing a jacket. Though in Finland, there are entire summers where that isn't possible sometimes.
Hopefully not this summer.
I need a good barbecue day.

They have alpacas at the factory?
Our daughter is super into alpacas. She has a collection of soft alpacas from real alpacas fur.
Only for the family day - not normally. But they are very dog friendly in the office :)
My dad used to work in a factory and once a year they would have a day where families could come like this. I remember it was always really impressive and we had to wear safety glasses and stuff like that. It's cool that they still do stuff like this.
I think so too. It is a pretty easy lift for them to organise considering, and it creates some good will.
Was you're misspelling in the title deliberate?
May Smallsteps find jobs with alpacas and bunnies and four leaf clovers, and may everyday be a BBQ day for you.
Definitely not! I don't always pick up on them these days. Well, I miss a lot of them anyway.
Hopefully, she learns to grill also, so I can just sick back and enjoy :)
something tells me she won't be grilling any bunnies
My wife would crucify her ;D
ha! Rabbit meat is not that good anyway.
I have only tried it once.
The alpacas shaves stick necks cracked me right up for no real reason XD
they look like very excessively detailed hobby horses
Can somewhat relate, we've had some pretty miserable summers where it was too cold to hit the beach. And this is here. Hope you get some good barbeque days :)
Or something out of a Dr Seuss book.
I lived inland in a family of poor swimmers, so not having beach weather was okay! :D
Getting cooler there now?
Yeh it's pretty cold where I am now x_x The kids got me an oodie and it has been getting worn quite frequently.
also I'm a sook and can't cope with the cold
Kids tend to choose things with no clue how much care they’ll need. Still, that’s kinda how we all learn, anyways. Maybe there's magical hope that one day in a multiverse that pineapple will be edible
She also decided to try and grow a watermelon in the garden :D
She's going to go far with this, I'm so impressed right now what a girl
In St. Petersburg, pineapples were grown in greenhouses in the 1730s. Perhaps, with lighting, pineapples could be grown in Finland too.
Yeah, I guess it is possible, but is it really a good use of energy?
I really hope you have a sunny day perfect for a barbecue this summer because hot weather with family and friends has a special with irreplaceable flavor.
Especially when eight months of the year can have snow :)
Your daughter’s clearly the optimistic type. I’d struggle to keep a cactus alive in this weather. At least alpacas come pre adapted to the cold
Let's see how long it lives. She will get a few reminders - and then she is on her own :)
😂😂😂 such is life
I love the idea of bringing people close to you to your workplace. I wonder if kids would find mine exciting since I work remotely as an editor 😅 I’m pretty sure they’d find my old job more fun (teaching kids) 😂
Hope the pineapple thrives inside! I saw one at my grandma’s place in the province and wanted to take it home too. It was so pretty! Can’t blame Smallsteps for picking it 😂
Unlikely - but I might! :)
That pineapple is so red. I also didn't realise they take so long to grow. Can be two years!
There is nothing good then seeing family together doing for excursions or sightseeing. I'm sure this experience will stay with you forever and likewise your inlaw too. This is really lovely family day. I also like how Smallsteps got to enjoy the alpacas and even picked a pineapple plant. Hope the weather gets better for your barbecue.
It is interesting how in some places they wish for rain, others for sun :)
Also, nurturing a plant can be such a rewarding experience for her, and some of plants require more care than expected :)
This definitely will take more care - I secretly think she isn't up for it.
I think you really have an awesome sunny day spending time with your wife and family. I just loved these alpacas, they are literally so cute. I think you'll be able to enjoy the barbecue grill soon!
Hopefully this week we can fire up the grill again.
@tarazkp Loved the cute captures of alpacas munching greens and behind them there seems to be great background, little blurr though!
Besides...hope you would thoroughly enjoy the BBQ!
Cheers!
Just a factory building in the background :)
Dear @tarazkp !
This is the first time I've seen a pineapple grown indoors. I'd like to see how to grow pineapples indoors!
I wonder what Smallsteps' room looks like!
By th way, In East Asian medicine, pork barbecue is considered very bad for stroke.
Foods that are good for treating stroke include strawberries, avocados, spinach, and walnuts.
I hope you always check your current health status! I hope you live healthy until Smallsteps turns 60!😄
Cheers :)
