I rubbed her eyes. I couldn't tell what I was feeling at that moment. Was it grief? Was it stress? I had returned to my mother's house after her funeral to escape the house of the city and maybe feel closer to my mum. Instead, I was talking to a mouse with a leash.

Neatly placed in corners. Peanut butter bait. Clever designs, all of them. It was almost flattering. But I'd been through this before. I knew how to wait. Humans get impatient. They think life should bend to their will. They forget the house belongs to more than just them.
I knew how to steal bait without setting the traps off. She tried sealing my entrance, so I chewed a new one - right behind her bookshelf.

Whiskers In The Dark
When she had the courage to crawl out of the tunnel, Ubulele came along, pausing after every few steps, leading the way.
She walked when the mouse walked and stopped when it did. She watched and learnt from its every move.
Soon after, several patrols passed by, leather boots clanking, guns slung over shoulders. Her heart pounded as she stopped, always taking a cue from Ubulele.

Drawn to Life
He did not wait for a response but went upstairs angrily leaving his mother's call to come back for dinner half way behind him. In his room he slammed the door shut then turned the key; this was his little rebellion which they allowed because they had not been able to take it off yet.
Lying on the bed staring at ceiling he thought of different things. The fan made its usual clicking noise – one, two, three.

“Have I ever gotten angry with you over something like this before? That’s a weak excuse, and you know it,” I said, this time not hiding my disappointment. “If you had just said something earlier, I might have even added some extra to help you get a better phone. But no, you decided to play on my intelligence.”
He went quiet. I could tell he wanted to say something, maybe to explain further or apologize. But I was done. For now, at least.

There’s no more beautiful way to live. To feel the burn in your legs as you run across black basalt that gleams like a dark mirror. Sometimes it’s impossible to describe the sensation. I spend my nights reading the old books my grandfather left behind—stories of athletes who could do whatever they wanted on the open surface: run, climb mountains, compete. Inspired by those, I started working—with the few others like me—on designing a race. A competition where the goal is to run, and to outrun certain death. To break records during those two hours we’re allowed to roam the surface.
