Few weeks ago, I wrote my first blog about cats, featuring “Kidi’’ the cat who was adopted by my brother .if ever you missed it feel free to check it our here :
Today I’m excited to introduce the newest addition to our extended furry family “Garfield” —he’s also adopted by my brother.
His name is a nod to the beloved cartoon cat. Gar is Maine Coon— Persian Mix—and he’s absolutely stunning . My brother recently came for a visit and brought Gar along to stay with us for a week.I already live with seven cats ,all of whom stay out on the terrace because I want them to enjoy things outside. Gar, however has to stay inside the house. I was a little curious and anxious. Would my cats welcome him? Would they play with him when we take him outside? Would he sleep well in a new environment? We still had to find out what kind of food he liked while he was with us.
On top of all that, I’ll admit — I was nervous about his breed. Being a mix of Maine Coon and Persian, I was unsure what kind of behavior to expect. Even as a kitten, he was already as big as my adult cats.I knew I was being a bit stereotypical due to his size and breed.
It turned out that all my assumptions were wrong — he’s just a sweet boy. He stayed in our living room, and every time I got out from room for a quick toilet break , he would meow , as if asking me to stay with him .But, later we figured out he was hungry. I would pet him and take him for a morning walk. We experimented with different kinds of cat food, until we finally discovered his favorite: steamed chicken
Just when I thought everything was going well, I noticed that “Tim” , my black cat is , had slowly started to shy away from us. Each time I called him and or tried to approach him, he would run. I’m just thankful that my other cats — especially my ginger cat, “Jinggo” — remained sweet and cuddly through it all .
It took weeks, even after Gar already left , for Tim to understand that everything is okay . He had been so jealous. I never imagined how difficult it would be to make him feel loved and wanted with a a guest around. Whenever I get near him , I reassure him: Gar was just a guest” . It was funny , but I think talking to them as if they’re humans actually helps .At the same time , it was a bit worrisome to see cats act that way and I had no idea how to handle it. Thankfully, he now let’s us pet him.
