Reading this felt like catching up with a friend who tells it like it is, funny, messy, and heartbreakingly real. Dolly Alderton’s memoir is not your regular memoir of life lessons, but It’s about friendship, self-discovery, and learning to love yourself even when life throws curveballs (and trust me, it throws a lot).
As a woman in mid 20's, I found Dolly’s voice quite relatable. She’s not perfect, far from it and that’s what makes her story so humane. She shares her awkward moments, her mistakes, her insecurities and those nights of wild partying that somehow lead to life lessons. One part that really struck me was her honest talk about body image, especially the pressure she felt to look thin, felt like someone has put words on a feeling i used to have a lot. Dolly doesn’t sugarcoat the anxiety and confusion that comes with trying to fit into society’s narrow ideas of beauty, and how that struggle affected her. It’s so rare to see that kind of vulnerability paired with humor, and it made me feel like I wasn’t alone in those insecurities.
Her friendship with her best mate, Farley, is the heart of the book. Its not about romance but it’s about the people who stick by you when everything else feels unstable. Her humor is warm like she’s letting you in on the joke that is adulthood.
The book’s structure is a bit like life itself nonlinear and full of surprises,it feels like Dolly is figuring things out as she goes, and you’re right there with her.
There were moments that hit me right in the chest that made me took a pause and stop, like when she talks about the fear of being alone or the struggle to grow up without losing yourself. It’s these honest, sometimes messy feelings that make the book feel so human.
If you’re looking for a book that’s equal parts funny, emotional, and real, Everything I Know About Love is a perfect pick. It’s like a hug from a friend who’s been through it all and is still standing, ready to share the good, the bad, ridiculous moments of life and love.
