[ENG-ESP] 📚💖 Book Review: Ligths Out (Into Darkness Novel 1) 🏥💻

Hello Hello Community! ✨, Lately, I've been a little absent from this platform (even though I'm still posting regularly), and it's basically for two reasons: 1. I was making my graduation dress, and I can say that it's my most challenging project yet, so that's all I could think about, and 2. I've been feeling a bit mentally exhausted, so when that happens, I usually take refuge in reading to escape from my reality. It is from this perspective that today I bring you a review of a somewhat controversial book 😂. I came across it because the premise of the story really piqued my curiosity, and as I read it, I couldn't help but laugh 😂. So, without further ado, let's get on with the review of A Oscuras 💻.

Alyssa Capelucci is a nurse devoted to her work. Her routine consists of sleeping, caring for her cat, working, going on some not-so-pleasant dates, and watching videos of her favourite masked man. who, unbeknownst to her, has been indulging Aly's fetishes. So one day she decides to leave him a message, not knowing that this might be the way to fulfil her wildest fantasy: to find a masked man waiting for her in her bedroom.

Joshua Hammond keeps his identity well hidden due to family issues that haunt him, but this has not stopped him from showing an alter ego on social media, where he uploads videos wearing a mask and fuels the fetishes of his followers, especially one of them: Aly. Now she has piqued his interest, and a message will be enough for Josh to want to fulfil Aly's fantasies.

This book is what it is, a dark romance with a lot of spice, but what makes it stand out for me from other books of the same genre is all the humour you can find in it. Navessa Allen makes an incredible effort to ensure that the reader genuinely enjoys the events presented in the story with humour. Above all, I think that the character of Joshua is portrayed in a way that not only makes you connect with him but also laugh at what he does, says and experiences. Beyond the obvious spice in the story, because let's be clear that the book is about that, the author makes sure you have fun even in the middle of a spicy scene.

Another detail I really liked about the book is that it is not afraid to show fetishes in a natural way. Here, the protagonists like extreme things, such as knife play, consensual stalking, spying, and other themes that we would not see in other stories with slightly more common sexual dynamics. Now, why am I mentioning this? Because there are currently a lot of stories on the literary market that claim to touch on these topics but don't really do so, or they greatly soften what extreme sexual practices can be, and it's appreciated when a book delivers what it promises, even if it's not to everyone's liking.

I feel that the characters are very well written in terms of what the author wanted them to be. On the one hand, we have Aly, who is a nurse in the emergency room, and this is an important detail because a large part of her character's weight comes from the fact that she is exposed daily to the most extreme aspects of healthcare. She is a woman who has seen it all and has to deal with it all professionally. So, with these characteristics in her life, if you tell me she is someone with extreme fantasies, I will believe you because, as a writer, you manage to build a narrative around the character that allows you to understand why she likes what is presented throughout the story.

However, with Joshua, I feel that this narrative is a little weak and is simply left to inherited characteristics that are not very well explained when they appear. Joshua comes from a family background with a father who was a serial killer, and because it is such a famous case, he must hide his identity so as not to be constantly connected to it. Under this premise, the character describes how these extreme sexual tastes have emerged, but although it is a valid narrative, it does not detract from the fact that they remain somewhat weak, especially when they are not explored in depth.

And it is precisely this lack of exploration that leads us to the ending, which in my opinion is the weakest part of the entire book, not so much because it is unclear how they got there, but because how they got out of that situation is quite bizarre and a little convenient for the plot. Under the book's main slogan: ‘A couple that kills together stays together’, the truth is that the ending is the icing on the cake. It even makes you believe that the characters were inevitably headed in that direction, especially if you take Joshua's previous history into account, but the reality is somewhat far from that message, and I think that's what prevented me from fully enjoying the book's ending.

My favourite parts were where Aly's cat appeared, or better known to me as Joshua's absolute accomplice 😂, their son as he used to call him, and that's because the cat and the home environment it represented were always used for humour and, obviously, to lighten the density of the plot. Obviously, it's not a perfect book, and it's not for everyone, but it's quite entertaining and delivers what it promises, so that makes it worthy of 4/5 stars for me.

¡Hola Hola Comunidad! ✨, últimamente ando un poquito perdida de ésta plataforma (aunque siga publicando con regularidad), y es por básicamente dos razones: 1. Estaba confeccionando mi vestido de graduación y puedo decir que es mi proyecto más retador así que mi cabeza solo pensaba en eso, y 2. Me he sentido algo agotada mentalmente, así que cuando ésto pasa suelo refugiarme en la lectura para poder despejarme de mi realidad. Es bajo ésta perspectiva que el día de hoy les traigo la reseña de un libro un tanto controversial 😂, llegué a él porque la premisa de la historia la verdad me llenó de curiosidad y en el transcurso de la lectura no hice más que reírme 😂, así que sin más que agregar vamos con la reseña de A Oscuras 💻.

Alyssa Capelucci es una enfermera entregada a su trabajo, sus rutinas consisten en dormir, atender a su gato, trabajar, tener algunas citas no del todo placenteras y ver los vídeos de su enmascarado favorito, éste último sin saberlo se ha encargado de complacer los fetiches de Aly, por lo que un día ella decide dejarle un mensaje sin saber que quizás de esa forma podría cumplir con su fantasía más soñada: encontrarse con un enmascarado esperándola en su habitación.

Joshua Hammond mantiene su identidad bastante encubierta debido errores familiares que lo persiguen, sin embargo ésto no lo ha detenido para mostrar un alter ego en redes sociales, donde se dedica a subir vídeos con una máscara y avivar los fetiches de sus seguidoras, en especial los de una de ellas: Aly. Ahora ella ha despertado interés en él, y un mensaje bastará para que Josh quiera cumplirle las fantasías a Aly.

Éste libro es lo que es, un dark romance con muchísimo spice, pero lo que lo hace distintivo para mí del resto de libros del mismo estilo, es todo el humor que se puede encontrar en él. Navessa Allen hace un esfuerzo increíble por hacer que el lector genuinamente disfrute con humor los hechos que se presentan en la historia, sobre todo considero que el personaje de Joshua está plasmado de una manera que no solo te hace conectar con él sino reírte de lo hace, dice y vive. Más allá del evidente spice que tiene la historia, porque tengan en claro que el libro es sobre eso, la autora se encarga de hacer que te diviertas aún en medio de una escena picante.

Otro detalle que me gustó mucho del libro es que no tiene miedo en mostrar los fetiches con naturalidad, aquí a los protagonistas le gustan cositas extremas, como el juego con cuchillos, el rol de persecución consensuada, el espionaje y demás temas que no lo veríamos en otras historias con dinámicas sexuales un poquito más comunes. Ahora bien, ¿Por qué hago mención de ésto?, porque actualmente hay en el mercado literario un montón de historias que dicen tocar éstos temas y realmente no lo hacen, o suavizan muchísimo lo que pueden llegar a ser las prácticas sexuales extremas, y se agradece cuando un libro promete lo que vende, así ésto no sea del agrado de todo el mundo.

Los personajes siento que están muy bien escritos en cuanto a lo que la autora quería que ellos fuesen, por un lado tenemos a Aly que es una enferma del área de urgencias, y ésto es un detalle importante porque gran parte del peso de su personaje es que está expuesta diariamente a lo más extremo del campo de la salud, es una mujer a la que le ha tocado ver de todo y hacer frente con profesionalismo a todo eso. Entonces con éstas características de vida, si tu me dices que es alguien con fantasías extremas, yo te lo voy a creer porque logras como escritor construir una narrativa alrededor del personaje que te permite entender la razón de que le guste lo que se plantea a lo largo de la historia.

Sin embargo, con Joshua siento que esa narrativa queda un poquito floja y se deja simplemente a características heredadas que tampoco se explican muy bien cuándo aparecen, y es que Joshua viene de un contexto familiar con un padre que fue asesino serial, siendo un caso tan famoso es la razón por la que él debe ocultar su identidad y así no estar constantemente conectado a ésto. Bajo esa premisa es que el personaje describe que han surgido éstos gustos sexuales extremos, pero aunque es una narrativa válida, no quita que sigan siendo un tanto floja, sobre todo cuando no se explora a profundidad.

Y es justamente esa falta de exploración la que nos lleva al final, que a mí perspectiva es la parte más floja de todo el libro, no tanto porque no se entienda el cómo llegaron ahí, sino porque el cómo salieron de esa situación es bastante bizarra y un poco sacada a conveniencia de la trama. Bajo el eslogan principal del libro: “La pareja que mata unida se mantiene unida”, la verdad es que el final es la guinda del pastel, incluso te haría creer que inevitablemente los personajes estaban dirigidos hacía ese camino, más si tienes en cuenta la historia previa de Joshua, pero la realidad está un tanto alejada de ese mensaje y creo que eso fue lo que más me hizo no poder disfrutar del todo ese cierre del libro.

Mis partes favoritas era donde aparecía el gato de Aly, o mejor conocido para mí como el cómplice absoluto de Joshua 😂, el hijo de ambos como él solía llamarlo, y es porque el gato y contexto hogareño que este representaba siempre eran los elementos usados para el humor, y obviamente para aligerar la densidad de la trama. Evidentemente no es un libro perfecto, y no es para todo el mundo, pero es bastante entretenido y cumple con lo que promete, así que eso lo hace merecedor de 4/5 estrellas para mí.
