Here and there: Twenty Eight - In the chopper

I've been on a few helicopters over the years, cool but also sort of scary at times as those buggers sometimes fall out of the sky. I've not had one do that yet so I'm not dead and to celebrate I thought I'd share a few images I took from a helicopter a while back. Ok, I lied a little bit, one of the shots is of the helicopter so I wasn't actually in the helicopter when I took it.

If you look carefully you'll be able to see a bit of reflection from the glass in one of them (above) and the fourth image actually caught the rotor blade in the top left corner.

Have you ever been in a helicopter? If so, tell me about it...and if you've been in a helicopter that crashed I'm even more keen to hear the story!

Nope... Not gonna happen

Come on man, I see you as the side gunner type. It's fun.

I've been in a few helicopters. When we visited Brazil, we flew over Foz Do Iguacu

I also hired copters a couple of times to ferry my staff about.

Sightseeing from a chopper is a pretty good way to do it and for most the experience of flying in a helicopter is a thrill in itself.

That pictures are simply fantastic, it's stunning...

I've never been in an helicopter, not like that there are many chances here I think, not many helipads... I would be kinda scared, helicopters look delicate and very skill requiring to drive

It's a nice part of the world and yes, it's bloody amazing!

Flying helicopters is pretty complicated and getting it wrong usually means it's lights out, they tend to drop like a stone when things go wrong.

Yep that's the feeling, one mistake and it's game over... even harder than planes since you have no auto pilot on there

Yep, and planes can glide to some degree, helicopters just drop, and are usually spinning wildly when they do.

The closest I've ever been to a helicopter is a toy one. The good thing is that it was remote-controlled. I was excited when my nephew lent it to me and I tried to fly it. When I tried to land it, it crashed into the floor. Luckily, it wasn't a real one.

Remote control helicopters are pretty difficult to fly...the landings can bring the most complexity as you found out. I hope your nephew wasn't too upset.

I'm not sure if he was upset, but the fact is that he didn't lend me the helicopter again 😕 We put it back together and I didn't touch it again, even though I really wanted to.

I've never flown in a helicopter but those pictures look incredible! My 77 year old uncle recently fulfilled his dream of taking a helicopter trip and was fascinated, I'm glad he did it, it was in the USA.

Maybe you'll get to do it someday, it's a lot of fun, mostly.

I assure you that if the opportunity arises I will take it, life is a life to be lived!

Amazing views! Can’t really beat the quiet mountain landscapes!

I have been in a helicopter only once as a kid 32 years ago. My old uncle was one of the guys higher up at Fokker and the Dutch Space Program. When he went to retire, the Noordwijk Space Expo had a celebration of his career, that included a Helicopter trip. I was lucky to be invited (we flew a short trip near the Dutch coast line).
What I recall most was the intense sound during lifting off.

That's pretty cool indeed.

There's a lot going on when a helicopter is taking to the air and the forces involved are immense, the noise too as you point out.

Never been in one. I am not sure if I will ever either. They were doing tours at one of the campgrounds I was at this summer, but I didn't realize what it was until it was too late.

The small ones, aren't much fun, like what we use here for mustering on our gigantic cattle farms. These can be the MH-6 "little bird" (military use them too) and much smaller and cheaper. The larger ones feel a bit better but most people would only get to go into something in between like what tourist operators use I guess.

Yeah, that makes sense. Probably no blackhawk rides for me in my future!

Yeah, a cool chopper though.

Have you ever ridden in a Blackhawk? Or can you neither confirm nor deny it? :)

😶

The shots are nice. The view from a help must be almost às breathtaking as that from a plane. I have never been on a helicopter but would very much like too. Though I suppose I would be half frightened out of my wits any time I see signs of a possible crash. The snow capped summits provide an exhilarating view.

If you were in a helo and crashed you'd only be concerned for a while and then it's almost certain you'd be dead and that would be that; you'd not care about anything at all.

I have never done a helicopter ride and I think I would really like to. Especially in that setting! Thank you for sharing this!

I hope you give it a try sometime and the scenery below is worth the effort.

I have never been in a helicopter but it is on the bucket list. What I am really hoping for is to become wealthy enough to learn to fly one. that would be wild.

Looks like a really wonderful day. How is the temperature control inside of it?

It wasn't cold, but wasn't warm either, fairly comfortable I'd say.

My tip would be, if you ever get your own helicopter set some money aside for a snuggie as well, that way, if it's cold, you can slip on your snuggie and be all nice and snuggly warm.

Won't look so good, but looks aren't always the priority I guess.
