Introduction

Engagement on Hive is very important and it’s what sets Hive apart from every other web3 social media platform. Hive is a “social media” platform and by social media, you need to socialize and connect with people.

In this post, we will cover the basics of Hive. You will get to understand how to carry out little activities on the Hive blockchain.

No man is an island and being on a platform like this, you will need to make great connections. Hive is more interesting when you have friends, it makes it easier for you to stay longer as these people cheer and support you.

Hive is too big to get bored, and no one is going to reprimand you for exploring rather we would applaud you as long as you are doing the right thing.

We will be covering the following topics:

  • How to join communities.
  • How to post in a community.
  • How to follow people.
  • Upvoting, commenting, and reblogging of posts.

Be very careful with your screenshots as not to show personal information like: keys, passwords account memo's on Binance Exchange etc.

How to join a Community

You can’t say you are a bonafide member of Hive if you do not belong to a community or support a community. Hive is community-based and together as a community we grow.

A community is made of people who share similar interests in a particular niche. Joining a community means meeting people of similar interests and building relationships. Remember, we build genuine relationships on Hive.

Joining communities you like and engaging with members of the community can help build new relationships. Being active is also important.

In this tutorial, you will learn how to join several communities using the Ecency DApp.

People follow people for different reasons and on various social media platforms so Hive is not different.
Do you find a Hivean's post educational? Does the post resonate with you? Do you want to read their blog again?

If you wish to read this Hivean's post again all you have to do is to follow them.

There are so many ways of following people. You can decide to follow people from the communities you subscribed to, the trending feed, or from reblogs from friends, whichever way works for you.

In this tutorial, we will be following people from the communities we subscribed to as these people share similar interests with us making it easy to establish common ground.

Upvoting, commenting, and reblogging of posts

Upvote on Hive is simply to like a post. Just the way you like people’s posts on Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok, we also do that here. Remember, Hive is a Social Media platform.

When you upvote(like) a post or comment it simply means you enjoy the post or you appreciate the author. When you upvote a post you earn from it so does the author, making it a win-win situation.

How to upvote

  • Click on the little blue arrow.

image.jpeg

  • Choose the percentage of vote you want to give to the author.

image.jpeg

  • Click on the little arrow.

image.jpeg

This is an indication that you have upvoted the post.

image.jpeg

Note: Self-voting is wrong and you could get downvoted for doing so and downvotes can damage your reputation. Be very careful. You don’t want to ruin the reputation you worked so hard for.

How to Comment

Do you find a post interesting and you would love to leave a comment?

  • Click on the post

image.jpeg

  • Scroll down and input your comment in the comment box.

image.jpeg

  • Click on reply.

image.jpeg

Always remember to reply to comments on your posts. Ignoring comments on your posts can give a negative impression of you. From commenting and replying to comments, you can make new friends.

One of the perks of commenting on Hive is that you get rewarded for your comments too. Yes, you can earn via commenting.
If a Hivean likes your comment he or she can go ahead to upvote your comment and that is why you need to avoid making generic comments like “nice post” or emojis alone.

On Hive we prioritize thoughtful comment and you should as well.

Reblogging

Reblogging simply means sharing a posts you find interesting. It’s the same thing as reposting. Every post you reblog appears on your blog and also reaches a wider audience.

  • Click on the reblog icon.

image.jpeg

  • Click on reblog.

image.jpeg

The longer you stay on Hive the more you’d find different ways to carry out these little activities.

It sure does, friendships are golden you know😃

Hi my friend! This is beautiful! You touched one of the most important and fundamental part of Hive. I say this because this is what every newbie needs to see to understand the concept of socialisation.

Your tutorial is not only instructive but well arranged and easy to comprehend. Another thing that stands out for me is the use of screenshots, it is very nice.

Never really seen you make videos, but yeah I enjoyed watching the tutorial video. Great task execution and great explanation too. I believe this would be a great guide for newbies to understand engagement.

Thank you so much, I tried to make it as simple as I could. For the screenshots, I hope it wasn't too much, I tried to be careful with it too.

Engagement is key and that's one of the biggest ways to excel on Hive and I wish newbies get to understand this.

Thanks for your lovely comment.

Well done Ibb.

Thank you Funshee, I hope this helps a newbie out there😃

You are welcome 🤗, I think it will.

This was nice @ibbtammy. I have a problem concerning what you said; voting yourself is wrong.
I follow curation trails and I just noticed the trails I follow vote my posts and I also do. So I manually check and remove my votes from my own posts.

Hi @zain-ab001,I saw your comment and just wanted to clarify something.

Curation trails themselves don’t automatically make you vote your own posts unless the trail leader happens to vote your post first. In that case, your account copies that vote because you’re following the trail. It’s not technically you voting yourself but it can look like it if you also vote manually. And also voting yourself is not wrong as some cases justifies it, however if you’re community driven, you’d rather use that mana or vote on another meaningful or quality post. People that vote themselves often and without a reasonable cause are usually downvoted by people that share this idea.

If you’re seeing this happen often, it might be worth checking your trail settings on Hive.vote. You can even set it to avoid voting your own posts entirely.

Hope this helps! And have some !PIZZA

Thanks 🙏🙏. This was really helpful and I would check it right away.

This for the explanation Samuel. Curation trails can be a bit tricky for newbies.
