From the eighteen minute mark: We still need nodes to be simpler for people to set up, and for the hardware to be less demanding to make it more accessible. If we can optimise the software more (or it becomes a reality where phones are powerful enough) - nodes on a mobile phone, connected to data will be incredible. Nodes would be popping up everywhere.
The one great thing about HIVE is definitely what you've spoken about (to rewind to points you made earlier in the video) - is that immutability. The fact that trust is built upon trustless trust, and the ability to look back, to audit, and make a decision for yourself.
Twenty five minute mark: blockchains that are run as a business means they'll fail. Most businesses do fail.
I agree with you about hive - if it were to vanish, I wouldn't know what to do, I wouldn't know where to go. There's no "place" that I could throw my creative efforts toward.
Your passion is evident in your voice. I wish others could feel the same way.
If I recall correctly from the Hive Thrive show the other day @solominer is running a witness node from his home using a $700 Mini-PC, running Ubuntu on bare metal.
I didn't ask if he had to jump through any hoops with his internet provider.
I have hardware that could run a witness node in the very room I'm sitting in, I just want someone to hold my hand to help me set it up step by step, because, while I am computer literate - I am not a system administrator - and I'm scared of fucking it up.
If anyone wants to help, feel free to message me :P
I've looked at someguy's witness node in a box before (the dockerised version), but my brain cannot fathom many of the concepts - because, I am not a sys admin :P
If we have a shell script that lets anyone deploy a witness node, given an operating system and a hardware requirement - and clear instructions on what needs to be added to the config, then we would probably see a lot more witness nodes up and running.
For me, that's the dream state for hive :)
Turn on a computer, run a script. Put in your priv key for declaring you're a witness, wait for the chain to sync, and presto, go and campaign for some votes based on your reptuation / history around the place (and your ability to feed the server power, data, and care over an extended period)
I guess it would be good for people who want to run a witness node to have some level of sys admin knowledge and some technical understanding of the workings of the chain. Doesn't have to be deep but some level of understanding will really help the decentralization. If it's just a matter of "set it and forget it", then during difficult periods there is a much higher likelihood of all those nodes going down (or worse, to be tricked, infiltrated or co-opted). The witness node operator also has to review proposed updates to the chain and implement them if deemed desirable. Imagine hundreds of witnesses who blindly implement updates - that can be very problematic.
I don't think every witness has to be a sys admin and a developer, but a conceptual understanding of things and being able to operate the node on their own would be highly beneficial to the network's resilience.
Anyways, there is a step-by-step guide on setting up a witness node, if you'd like to give it a try: https://gitlab.syncad.com/hive/devportal/-/blob/develop/_nodeop/witness-node.md We can help if you get stuck on any point, and the guide can be improved accordingly, so that it becomes cleaner for others. If you also have questions about any of this, I and others would be happy to chime in. Better to do it on-chain than in messages so that it would be available to others.
I've self-hosted my own wordpress site at home, exposed to the Internet, without issue; so I know a little more than someone who will just run a shell script and press update every single time :P
I saw many of the hardforks through steem's early times, and also, of course, the one that led to hive.
I might have some time later this week. I have an unraid machine with 128GB of RAM, 10C, 20T processor, but my limiting factor might be the fact that I only have ~2TB SSD space on it.
Plenty of space for spinning rust though, and plenty of space free. I feel like that will be the biggest bottleneck. My intent would be to run the witness node in a VM, to ensure it is isolated from other processes on the machine, with no access to my local network.
Some amount of stress is as necessary condition for growth, but that growth requires a period of rest and recovery.
The internet has been fantastic for connecting us across the globe, but it also is a firehose of unactionable "danger" information. If you read the news in the morning, its all wars and rumors of wars.
A hundred years ago if we were neighbors in a small town most of our troubles would have been local troubles, and common to us all - with occasionally some larger problems arising.
It's likely that our biology and neuro-psychology is not well served by the systems that exist.
You know I have beenconnecting with a few other people who have been here a while and complain a little about those who come and go, and the quality blog content/engagement. My answer is always to spend more time on the NETWORKING component of Content + Networking + Time = Hive Success. While that may be a factor, it totally discounts what you covered in our 52-minute visit.
While there is plenty of room for people to earn and practice writing, share experiences and connect, this is a platform also for those who will fight against a world order that constantly sets us up for the fleecing.
I hit play so that I could get some work done and double the value of that time passing for me. Turns out I was more distracted than I thought and I had to stop and think too many times to get much done. Ah the work for a centralized system (even though I own this business) can wait an hour to allow me a stronger connection to the blockchain and one of the leaders I have followed for so many years.
I am sorry to hear about your struggles in the last while but inspired by the learning you were able to do in the downtime. Hopefully you are on the strong upswing and we will hear from you more regularly.
One incredible power you may have overlooked is how Hive can grant us direct audience with those who lead and there is an open invitation for anyone to step into that leadership group.
11:00 A monkey picking another monkey's eyelid will throw anybody off, but your energy does not get thrown off.
Marketing - What's Hive niche?
21:50 HIVE already has great utility as it is. It works very well for sending and receiving value, but people want to move the magic internet money that they know (Dash, LTC, Bitcoin...) All of which have larger and more recognized brands than HIVE.
With @vsc.network it's going to be possible to position hive as a chain-agnostic, underlying protocol that lets you move money freely. Got a nice upvote? Withdraw BTC.
Decentralization:
When it comes to decentralization, HIVE is moving in the right direction, but we need, at the very least, ~300 orcas with 100,000 HP each with varying opinions, willing to vote on DHF and governance. We don't have to agree, but we need a larger, active middle class. LTC's founder, Charlie Lee, also sold a large part of his coins which he mined fairly just so he didn't remain a large stakeholder. Could we talk to some large whales to do an OTC deal with the community in the name of decentralization?
Skin in the game 38:40
You talk about people not having to buy $HIVE and $HBD; they can earn in. This is true, but isn't it also true that having skin in the game also makes you a hard-core, committed Hivean?
I think Hive is more distrubted then we think, in terms of utility. Many countries maynot have orcas or whales, but they have users. Most of the world will not have reasonable stake, at least not at first. For being as "under the radar" as we are, we have a strong distrbution than we can use as a solid foundation. As the cracks in the legacy system show more and more, people will have no choice but to use crypto as value/communication rails. Hive has not f'd around at all, we are more than prepared to handle the gaps that are ahead. Destination is clear, we need to keep pushing. Whales, as utility/price grows will naturally sell off stake, me, since I've been here have lost stake because I've invested in so many different projects, I actually had more Hive 4 years ago than today. Whales tend to over spend on the chain, (my projects alone well over six figures that I won't recoup, nor do I want to, I want it for the good of Hive) So I believe, rep, what you do, how you do it, all this is "stake" - in the vid I said there are people higher than me in the witness ranks yet hold less stake, as it should be. Anyone on Hive as the opp to rise, stake or no stake. Cheers for your input, always a good convo
You're right about attackers will have to buy up supply from the exchanges, making us all wealthy, and we can just use the blockchain for what it was designed for, consensus and censorship resistance... take over our chain? we will fork hive, blacklist the attackers, and just keep on moving...
Community IS the consensus, and Hive is one of the largest "underground" community in the ecosystem
I see in the comments that respected people are writing about the essence of the problem. Unfortunately, I don’t understand English by ear, and as far as I understand, there are no subtitles. If it’s not too much trouble, please write a short post in text, and even more people will know your opinion. Your opinion is important in this blockchain.
Unfortunately, Hive is being destroyed by Downvotes of the little bloggers who are trying to make it here. Where are they supposed to go if the whales attack the small Creators ? People are trying to earn Hive and earn HBD but it is being taken away on day 7 by Buildawhale (markymark) Blocktrades and others
I throw counters here and there but there is somethings we can do to help here. Hive is still a baby. I remeber when "bid bots" took over, and we fixed that overnight. We have a lot of things focused on, but I have not forgotten what most call "proof of brain", I call incentivized stakeholder distribution. Nothing is perfect, and the distribution model can have a few tweaks. I was actually on the "team" that solved this issue last time to defeat bid bots, came up with the theory etc. I believe we are halfway there, we can add a few more parameters to make "upvote distribution" better than it is. I'll talk more about this in a future vid. But lets not throw the baby out with the bathwater, because we have something truely special
Once this issue is solved I may actually be able to return and share all the cool stuff I've been creating. Until then I feel a terrible taste in my mouth every time my hard work is zero'd bc I don't ring kiss.
Yeah … so many incredible artists, Photographers, Filmmakers, story tellers and musicians have left Hive in the past few weeks .. thanks to the nonstop downvotes to zero on Day 7. It’s like a massive Exodus
You also don't admit to your mistakes, your last post kept saying "it wasn't well received" rather than admitting to you using AI to generate text to make it look like you put more effort into your farmy screenshot posts.
Marky's not a dumbass. People can go around and twist and turn what actually happened and plead that downvotes are chasing people away but that's only a small fraction of abusers, way more people are being onboarded and join hive daily than 1-2 leaving every week cause they decide to start farming or attempting to deceive curators and stakeholders.
The issue is that these few people like yourself and offgrid sit and wait on the chance to be loud and make the issue bigger than it really is, because all you care about at the end of the day is to earn rewards for your posts, which is fine in and of itself, but pretending that there's a problem with downvotes isn't true. If downvoters actually went against the majority, there's always bigger fish around that'd counter them or band together to do so.
I also left Steemit and joined this platform and have been working on this platform for the past few years and I see that people here are putting a lot of effort and hard work to make this platform more successful and it is a fact that its demand, supply and all the other things are being looked after with a lot of hard work and the people here are creating different communities and inviting their friends to this platform, so it is a matter of great joy. It is absolutely true that there were a lot of problems even when it was created and then after working hard it was launched globally and then a lot of people joined it and they are using it till today. After doing each task, problems also come and then slowly growth starts.
The phrase "we have a shout" in minute 31:20, has impacted me greatly, even more so coming from someone who cares about others and Hive platform, otherwise, you wouldn't be calling for conscience and we need to make real difference. Hive has a looooot of benefits and we need to talk that and spread it

In the video @theycallmedan mentions a book he wrote with @starkerz
That book is the "The Digital Community Manifesto (Digital Rights, Game Theory and Governance of Scalable Blockchains for Use in Network States)"
Chapter 4 and the rest of the book can be read at:

Yes …
I am a big Stakeholder and Investor on Hive and Splinterlands
I’m hanging in there.
This is why I still have 15,000 in staked in HBD Savings. And more on the Exchanges … Hodling … Hodling
I believe that the top 10 Hive Witnesses can fix this Buildawhale / markymark Downvote problem …
Hive has a ton of potential. So I’ll wait to see if there is a remedy.
