There are things expected of us to do in order for us to make it to heaven.
Romans 10:9 – that if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
Many people make the mistake of thinking that simply because they are born in a Christian family that automatically makes them a christian and therefore they are saved. That's not really how christianity works. Salvation is not something that is inherited. One doesn't receive salvation simply by being a child of a christian. Salvation is something that is personal. This is because we have our own individual race to run.
The scripture in Romans mandates that we need to confess the Lord Jesus with our mouth, not in our minds. Then with our hearts we should believe what we have said. Believing has to do with faith. The bible says in Hebrews 11:6 that without faith it is impossible to please God, for whoever comes must first of all believe that He is, what this means is that first of all we should believe that who we are coming before is God.
Whenever we come before God's presence we should come with the awareness that we are coming before the creator of the universe. We should believe that He is God Almighty to begin with. The bible in John 3 16 says that whoever believes in God would not perish. So we need to believe in God.
We also need to repent of our sins. All of these should be things of the past. We are not expected to bring to to our christian journey because it compromises our walk with God.
