Ptal se mě @krakonos, jestli taky máme v Brně Sherwood. V Praze je tak nazýván nechvalně proslulý park před Hlavním nádražím, kam není radno chodit ani za dne bílého. A ano, i v Brně by se našel Sherwood. U sídliště Vinohrady je lesopark Akátky, kterému místní neřeknou jinak, než Sherwood. Dokonce se u parku nachází i restaurace tohoto jména. 

Tímto dotazem mě @krakonos inspiroval k návštěvě exoticky znějících míst, které se v Brně nacházejí. A kde jinde začít než ve slavném Bronxu, nebo chcete-li, Brnoxu.

This question from @krakonos inspired me to explore some of the more exotically named places scattered around Brno. And where better to start than in the famous Bronx — or as some like to call it, Brnox.

Bronx je lokalita ohraničená ulicemi Cejl, Ponávka, Vranovská a Francouzská, přesahující odtud do dalších městských částí Zábrdovice a Husovice.

Dříve v činžovních domech z 19. století bydlelo obyvatelstvo židovské, během světové války je vystřídali obyvatelé německé národnosti a po odsunu zde byli ubytováváni Romové přicházející ze Slovenska a Bulharska. 

Vzhledem k lukrativnímu umístění v blízkosti centra zde probíhá čilá bytová výstavba a další obměna obyvatelstva.

Thanks to its lucrative location near the city center, the Brno Bronx is now undergoing a wave of new residential development — and with it, a gradual shift in its population. 

Špatnou reputaci Bronxu se snaží vylepšit brněnští umělci Kateřina Šedá, Kateřina Tučková a Martin Reiner. Posledně jmenovaný stojí za projektem Městská galerie. Pro ty, co se nebojí, je přístupná 24 hodin denně a sedm dní v týdnu. Jednotlivá díla se nacházejí na zdech budov, většinou sousedících s prolukou. V rámci projektu Městská galerie už vzniklo 13 velkoplošných maleb.

EN At the same time, a group of local artists is working hard to change the area’s bad reputation. Among them are Kateřina Šedá, Kateřina Tučková, and Martin Reiner. The latter is the mind behind the project known as the Urban Gallery.

For those who aren’t afraid to explore, the gallery is open 24/7. The artworks aren’t displayed in a traditional space — they’re painted directly onto the walls of buildings, usually ones that border empty lots. So far, 13 large-scale murals have been created as part of this project.

S murály se můžete setkat i v jiných částech města. Nejnovějším a největším murálem je Vlk a Zajíc na Novobranské ulici v samotném centru. Proluka vznikla po domě zasaženém leteckou pumou za druhé světové války a dosud nebyla zastavěna. Toto dílo financovala společnost Eon, která tímto způsobem  obyčejně zkrášluje své trafostanice.

EN: But murals like these can be found in other parts of the city too. The newest — and biggest — one is called The Wolf and the Hare, located on Novobranská Street, right in the heart of Brno. The mural fills a gap left by a building destroyed during a World War II air raid, a lot that has remained vacant ever since.

This particular artwork was funded by the energy company E.ON, which often beautifies its transformer stations in a similar way.
