Visiting Kyoto with my friend and my sis

I’m really proud of the awesome friends I made back in school. Whenever they come to visit Japan, I love taking them sightseeing in Kyoto and Osaka. It’s not every day that I get to explore the tourist spots, so it’s such a fun opportunity to discover new things together with my friends from overseas. I always look forward to these adventures!

学生時代にたくさんの友達を作ったことは私の誇りです。そして、そのたくさんの友達が日本に訪れる度に一緒に京都や大阪市内を一緒に観光に行くことがこの頃私が行う楽しみの１つでもあります。なかなか観光地に行く機会が少なくなってきているのですが、海外から遊びに来てくれた友人と一緒に観光地に訪れると新たな発見があり、とても良い機会だと思っています。

On that lovely day, I decided to take my friend, who was visiting me in Japan, on an adventure to Kyoto. It was great that my sister could join us for some sightseeing too! We set our sights on the beautiful five-story pagoda called Yasaka-no-Toh (八坂の塔）, which sits right behind Yasaka Shrine. It’s such a popular spot in Kyoto, and I was excited to share the amazing views with my friend!

この日は日本に遊びに来てくれた友人と一緒に京都に遊びに行くことにしました。姉も時間があると言うことで一緒に観光に参加してくれました。八坂神社の裏にある、八坂の塔と言う五重塔を見に行くことにしました。京都観光では定番の観光地で、友人にもこの景色を見せてあげたいなぁと思い一緒に行くことにしました。

When I was handling marketing at my last job, we loved showcasing the stunning view of Yasaka-no-toh (八坂の塔） to introduce people to Kyoto. It’s definitely one of my favorite spots because it’s just so beautiful and charming! These days, it’s bustling with tourists, and one of the hottest trends is renting kimonos. It’s so much fun to see visitors wearing kimonos as they stroll around the city. I can’t help but think it’s really sweet to spot couples exploring Kyoto in their traditional outfits!

八坂の塔は私が前職でマーケティングを担当しているときにもたくさんこの景色を使用し、京都の紹介を行いました。本当にきれいで風情のある地域で私の大好きな地域です。今ではたくさんの観光客が訪れていました。京都では今、レンタル着物がとても人気で、着物を一日借りて着物を着ながら京都観光をすると言うことがとても人気がある様です。カップルが着物を着て、観光をしている姿をみるととても微笑ましく、見ていてとてもかわいらしいと思いました。

We strolled from Yasaka-no-toh (八坂の塔） to Kiyomizu-dera Temple, which is just about a 15 to 20-minute walk. However, it was quite crowded with tourists, making it a bit tricky to move forward. We visited Kyoto in February, and it felt pleasantly warm as the plum blossoms started to bloom. As we meandered through Sannenzaka on our way to Kiyomizu-dera, I realized that even though we’d been here many times before, there’s always something new and exciting to discover. One of my favorite spots on Sannenzaka is a little shop that sells lovely gourd ornaments. I have such fond memories of picking up many souvenirs there for my friends living abroad.

八坂の塔から清水寺に向かって歩きました。徒歩で行くとだいたい１５分から２０分程度の距離ですが、観光客が本当にたくさん来ている場所で、歩くのも人がいっぱいでなかなか前に進めないほど混んでいました。私たちが京都に行ったのは２月だったのですが、梅の花が咲き始め少しずつ温かくなってきたと感じる気温でした。三年坂を通り抜けて清水寺に向かったのですが、何回も来たことがある地域でしたが、来るたびに新しい発見がありとても楽しかったです。三年坂にあるヒョウタンの置物を販売している売店は私のお気に入りのお店で、そこでは海外に住む友人にたくさんお土産を買ってプレゼントとしてあげたのを懐かしく思い出されます。

We strolled over to Kiyomizu-dera Temple, and it turns out my friend had already been there before. Instead of wandering inside the temple grounds, we snapped a fun photo in front of it. I first visited Kiyomizu-dera when I was a junior high school student, and even after more than 30 years, I still can’t get over how beautiful it is every time I come back. In winter, the maple trees are bare, but I can’t help but wish I could visit again in April when the leaves turn vibrant red and the cherry blossoms are in full bloom. My sister, my friend, and I took a great photo together, and it really felt like a school excursion. We had a blast capturing that moment!

そして、清水寺まで歩いていきました。清水寺は友人が既に着たことがあったらしく、私たちと行った時には境内の中には入りませんでしたがお寺の前で記念撮影を行いました。清水寺に初めて来たのは私が中学生の時でした。修学旅行で来たのですが、それからもう３０年以上経過するのですが、何度来てもそのお寺の美しさには見惚れます。冬はカエデが既に落葉した後ですが、紅葉の時期や、サクラが咲く４月は特に美しくまたその時期に行けたらいいなと感じました。友人と姉と３人と一緒に写真を撮影したのですが、修学旅行の集合記念写真のようで楽しい一枚を撮影することができました。

Afterward, we felt a bit hungry and decided to search for a ramen restaurant. Kyoto is home to many excellent ramen spots, so it was easy to find a good place to eat. Once we had our fill, we continued our sightseeing tour. As we walked around town, I noticed numerous kimono rental shops. I had never had the chance to stroll through the streets of Kyoto in a kimono, but I believed that such an experience would create lasting memories. I hoped that one day I would be able to share that special experience with someone.

その後はお腹が少しすいたので、ラーメンを食べるためにラーメンレストランを探しました。たくさんのラーメン店が京都にも進出していて、簡単に美味しそうなラーメン店を探すことができました。腹ごしらえをして、その後、また観光をつづけました。町を歩いていると着物レンタルをしている店をたくさん見かけました。私は一度も着物を着て京都の町を歩いたことはないのですが、その様な経験をすれば一生の思い出になるだろうなぁと思いながら、だれかといつかその様な思い出を作ることができたらいいなぁと考えていました。

I strolled over to Maruyama Park and, not far from there, I stumbled upon a lovely temple featuring a massive statue of Kannon. Honestly, I was completely in awe of its size! It was a warm day, but then out of nowhere, it started snowing in the afternoon—such a beautiful surprise! Kyoto was buzzing with tourists, and the lively atmosphere was contagious. I really hope more people come to experience Kyoto and decide to return to Japan. This trip has also sparked my desire to travel abroad!

その後、円山公園に向かって歩いていきました。円山公園から少し歩いたところにすごく大きな観音像があるお寺を見つけて入ってみました。その大きさには圧倒されました。温かい日ではあったのですが、午後からは雪が降り始めるほど寒い一日でした。京都は観光客があふれて、とても活気がありました。京都を観光して、また日本に来てみたいなぁと感じる観光客の方がふえたらいいなぁと感じています。わたしも海外旅行に行きたいなぁと感じました。
