Osaka castle, Osaka, Japan
One of my friends came to visit me in Osaka, and we decided to check out Osaka Castle together. It brought back memories of last year when another friend visited from overseas, and we also explored the castle, but that time it was a chilly autumn day. This visit was so much nicer because we went in spring when the cherry blossoms were starting to bloom. What a perfect way to make new memories.
I met my friend at Osaka-jo Koen Station, and we headed off to Osaka Castle. Since it was the weekend, the station was buzzing with tourists eager to see the castle and the beautiful park. The weather was warm, and those gorgeous cherry blossoms were turning the area into a stunning sight. I could just feel the excitement in the air with everyone enjoying the springtime vibes!
As you stroll toward Osaka Castle from Osaka-jo Koen Station, you'll notice a large moat surrounding the castle. The castle grounds are quite expansive and are encircled by two impressive moats! When it was built, Osaka Castle was the largest castle in Japan, featuring an amazing triple-layered moat. It’s interesting to think that lords from all over Japan brought large stones to contribute to the castle's construction. Each lord carried the stones not only to show off a bit but also to pledge their loyalty to Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the castle's owner. And let me tell you, the stone walls are absolutely stunning and truly remarkable.
I found it really fascinating that each feudal lord had their own family crest engraved on their will to show that this stone was carried by me. It’s a bit mind-boggling to think about how all the moats, stone walls, and stones were transported from all over Japan to Osaka over so many days.
This monument is dedicated to Yododono and Toyotomi Hideyori, the last rulers of Osaka Castle. It's a poignant reminder of their story. Young Toyotomi Hideyori and his mother, Yododono, bravely faced a challenging attack led by Tokugawa Ieyasu. In a tragic turn of events, they chose to end their lives here, marking the fall of Osaka Castle. Their legacy lives on through this monument, honoring their memory.
As you approach, you'll find a lovely large bridge spanning the moat, offering a fantastic view of Osaka Castle. It’s the perfect spot for taking beautiful photos that capture the charm of the castle. When we visited, the cherry blossoms were just starting to bloom, and it was delightful to see those pretty pink flowers beginning to appear on the cherry trees in Osaka Castle Park.
Once you cross the bridge over the first moat and take a few more steps, you'll catch sight of Osaka Castle! At first, it may not seem that big from a distance, but prepare to be amazed as you get closer. Although the current version of the castle was rebuilt recently, it's fascinating to think that the original structure was built over 400 years ago! Back then, a castle of this size must have been quite a sight to see. You can really appreciate how powerful Toyotomi Hideyori must have been to create such an impressive landmark!
For just 600 yen, adults can enjoy a visit to the rooftop observation deck! Inside the castle, you'll find a fantastic museum filled with armor and artifacts from the period, perfect for history buffs. And don’t miss the observatory on the rooftop—it offers breathtaking views of the entire city of Osaka! From up there, we could spot Namba and Umeda in the distance. It's an experience you won't want to miss!
I love when I take the Keihan train to Osaka City and get to see Osaka Castle from my window. Back in high school, I passed by this beautiful castle almost every day on my way to school. It really is a symbol of Osaka! It had been a while since I visited, but when I finally went back, I was reminded just how stunning it is. I have so many great memories tied to it, and my love for the city of Osaka has only grown stronger. 😊
