Hello to all the craft-loving and cat-loving members of this community! Whenever I travel to visit my cat, I try to bring him a small gift, but since I didn't have much time, I made something simple he could enjoy with some catnip I bought at a pet store.

For those who don't know, catnip is a plant that provides a relaxing effect on felines. It's approved by veterinarians and isn't harmful. It's perfect as a treat or for moments when you want your feline to relax a bit. Where I live, it wasn't available before, but it's now increasingly available in pet stores. They sell it in different forms: in sachets, inside toys, compressed, or even for planting. In my cat's case, I had previously bought him a compressed ball of catnip, and it didn't have any negative effects (some cats aren't affected or interested in it, but there are some cases where it can have adverse effects, so, like everything, it's best to always supervise everything that's new to our pets 🤓👍).

I got a small bag of catnip for $1, and instead of using it to pour it on the floor (cats roll around in it when they smell it 😌), I thought it best to make a kind of pouch to put the contents in so the bag wouldn't get lost. So, I cut a piece of thin fabric and also got a piece of thin paper.

✨ Materials ready ✨

The first thing was to cut out the shape of the pillow or toy. I chose a heart because I love my cat so much 😇, but it can be any shape you like: a star, a triangle, or a square. I cut two pieces, which I sewed with my sewing machine, leaving a small opening so I could turn the piece inside out and stuff it. If you don't have a sewing machine, you can easily do it by hand. I just recommend making the seams very tight and small to prevent the catnip from leaking out through the openings. Once this is done, turn the piece inside out.

When it's time to fill the bag, empty the contents into the paper. This is so that when you press the toy, it makes a sound. Cats really like things that crunch, or at least I've noticed that my cats' favorite toys have been simple paper balls.

Finally, close the toy's opening with a hand seam, making sure to seal it well, both to prevent the contents from escaping and to prevent the kitty from removing the seam while playing. This way, we have a squeaky toy with a very attractive scent for cats ✨

If you've never used catnip and don't feel confident using it on your cats, you can research it, read reviews from cat owners who have used it, and ask veterinarians. I also recommend monitoring your pets once you give them these types of toys, to see if they like them or if they have any harmful effects (although, as I mentioned, catnip is generally harmless to cats). But if you're not convinced, you can use valerian instead (you can find it at health food stores). I read that some cats are attracted to the smell of that plant and it relaxes them 😊

¡Hola a todos los integrantes de esta comunidad, amantes de las manualidades y de los gatos! Cada vez que viajo a visitar a mi gato, trato de llevarle un pequeño obsequio, pero como no disponía de mucho tiempo, elaboré algo sencillo que pudiera disfrutar con algo de catnip que compré en una tienda de mascotas.

Para aquellos que no sepan, el catnip o "hierba gatera", es una planta que le brinda a los felinos una especie de efecto relajante, es aprobada para los veterinarios y no es dañina. Es perfecta para utilizar como premio o para momentos en los que se desee que nuestro felino, se relaje un poco. En dónde vivo, antes no se conseguía, pero ya se encuentra cada vez más disponible en tiendas de mascotas. La venden en diferentes presentaciones: En bolsitas, dentro de juguetes, comprimidas o hasta para sembrar. En el caso de mi gato, anteriormente le había comprado una bola comprimida de catnip y no tuvo ningún efecto negativo (hay gatos que no le genera ningún efecto o interés, pero hay algunos casos en que puede generarle efectos adversos, por eso, como todo, lo mejor es siempre supervisar todo lo que sea nuevo para nuestras mascotas 🤓👍).

Conseguí una bolsita de catnip en 1$ y en lugar de utilizarla para verterla en el suelo (al olerla, los gatos se revuelcan sobre la misma 😌), pensé que lo mejor era elaborar una especie de saquito en donde pudiese meter el contenido de la bolsa y así, la misma no se perdiese. De esa forma, corté un trozo de tela fina y también conseguí un pedazo de papel delgado.

Lo primero, fue cortar la forma del cojín o juguete. Yo escogí a un corazón, porque amo mucho a mi gato 😇 pero puede ser la figura que desees: una estrella, un triángulo o un cuadrado. Corté dos piezas, las cuales procedí a coser con mi máquina, dejando una pequeña abertura para voltear la pieza y rellenar. Si no tienes máquina de coser, puedes hacerlo sin problemas a mano, sólo te recomiendo hacer muy cerradas y pequeñas las costuras, para evitar que el catnip se salga por las aberturas. Una vez hecho esto, se procede a voltear la pieza.

A la hora de rellenar, se vacía el contenido de la bolsa en el papel. Esto para que al presionar el juguete, el mismo genere sonido. A los gatos le gusta mucho las cosas que crujen o por lo menos he notado que los juguetes favoritos de mis gatos, han sido simples pelotas de papel 😌

Para finalizar, se cierra la abertura del juguete con una costura a mano, procurando de sellar bien, tanto para evitar que se salga el contenido como para evitar que el minino, pueda sacar la costura mientras juega. De esa forma, tendremos un juguete que cruje con un olor muy llamativo para gatos ✨

Si nunca han usado catnip y no se sienten seguros de usarlo en sus gatos, pueden investigar sobre el mismo, leer comentarios de personas que tengan gatos y lo hayan usado, así como preguntarles a veterinarios. También, les recomiendo hacer seguimiento de sus mascotas una vez que les den este tipo de juguetes, para saber si son de su agrado o si tienen algún efecto nocivo (aunque, como mencioné, el catnip suele ser inofensivo para los gatos). Pero si no les convence, pueden usar valeriana en su lugar (esta se consigue en tiendas naturistas), leí que algunos gatos se sienten atraídos al olor de esa planta y de igual forma, los relaja 😊
