There is no comparison between this Jazz-Matinée and the events of recent months and years. I am here today to invite you to a memorial service dedicated to the remembrance of one of Croatia's finest jazz pianists. I would like to say goodbye to Matija Dedić, who passed away last Sunday at the age of only 53. Even though he was so young, the news of the pianist's death did not come as a complete surprise to jazz lovers in my homeland, as Matija Dedić simply could not get through a day without alcohol.

Diese Jazz-Matinee gleicht in keinster Weise den Veranstaltungen der vergangenen Monate und Jahre. Heute lade ich zu einer Trauerveranstaltung, die dem Andenken an einen der besten Jazz-Pianisten Kroatiens gewidmet sein soll. Ich verabschiede mich von Matija Dedić, der am vergangenen Sonntag mit nur 53 Jahren dem Leben den Rücken zugekehrt hat. Obwohl so jung, kam die Nachricht vom Tod des Pianisten für Jazzliebhaber in meiner Heimat nicht nicht völlig überraschend, da es Matija Dedić schlicht und einfach nicht gelang, ohne den Alkohol einen Tag zu überbrücken.

Some people still say that Arsen Dedić and Gabi Novak's (Gabrijela Dedić) son failed to live up to the unspoken expectations and fame of his super popular parents in Southeast Europe. I would not subscribe to this theory, as Matija was active in an entirely different musical field than his parents. He did not have a talent for finding the right words to accompany melodies, but rather for transferring his thoughts to the piano keys through his fingers.

Es verstummen nicht die Stimmen, die lauthals verkünden, der Sohn von Arsen Dedić und Gabi Novak (Gabrijela Dedić) wäre daran gescheitert, den unausgesprochenn Anforderungen und dem Ruhm seiner in Südosteuropa überaus populären Eltern nicht gerecht zu werden. Dieser Theorie möchte ich mich nicht anschließen, da Matija auf einem musikalisch vollkommen anderen Feld, als seine Eltern unterwegs war. Sein Talent bestand nicht daraus, die richtigen Worte zu Melodien zu finden, sondern Gedanken durch seine Finger auf die Tasten des Pianos zu übertragen.

It was his approach to his profession (his calling) that set Matija Dedić apart from the other ‘stars in the musical firmament’. For him, there were no genres with strict barriers that should not be crossed in order to avoid antagonising the purists. There was probably no colleague who asked to collaborate with him and was rejected. Although he never pushed himself into the foreground, one always had the feeling that the man at the piano made the whole project complete. He respected the work of his colleagues. He felt responsible for the finishing touches that turned a found object into a diamond.

Das, was Matija Dedić so sehr von den anderen „Sternen am Musikhimmel“ unterschied, war seine Herangehensweise an seinen Beruf (seine Berufung). Für ihn bestanden keine Genres mit strikten Barrieren, die man besser nicht überwinden sollte, um die Puristen nicht gegen sich aufzubringen. Es gab wohl keine Kollegin oder Kollege die/der um eine Zusammenarbeit bat und auf Ablehnung traf. Obwohl sich nie in den Vordergrund drängend, hatte man stets das Gefühl, als mache der Mann am Piano das ganze Projekt zu einem Ganzen. Er respektierte die Arbeit des Kollegen. Er fühlte sich zuständig für den Feinschliff, der aus einem Fundstück einen Brillanten macht.

It was their undisputed ability to give the people of the Balkans the feeling that the multi-ethnic state of Yugoslavia, with its immense wealth of artistic creativity, still existed, regardless of national political decisions, that united father and son. Whether in Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia, Montenegro, or Macedonia – nowhere were father and son confronted with nationalistic prejudices. For Matija Dedić, jazz was like a large apartment of communication on a philosophical level, but one that never descended into incomprehensibility. The best of the best was considered the basis.

Was Vater und Sohn verband, war die unbestrittene Fähigkeit, abseits aller national-politischen Entscheidungen, den Menschen auf dem Balkan das Gefühl zu verleihen, als bestünde noch immer der Vielvölkerstaat Jugoslawien mit seinem immens großen Quell künstlerischen Schaffens. Egal ob in Slowenien, Kroatien, Bosnien, Serbien, Montenegro oder Makedonien – nirgendwo wurden Vater und Sohn mit nationalistischen Vorurteilen konfrontiert. Der Jazz war für Matija Dedić wie eine große Wohnung der Kommunikation auf einer philosophischen Ebene, die jedoch nie ins Unverständliche abgleitet. Das Beste vom Besten galt dabei als Grundlage.

An outstanding example of this is the Boilers Quartet, featuring Dedic, Križić, Baraković and Levacić, which has been invited to perform at the world's most famous jazz venues. After their performance in London, The Times included the quartet in its list of the best jazz bands outside the United Kingdom. It was only after his father's death that the son took up his works for the first time and interpreted them in a wonderfully emotional way. However, the memorial matinee concludes with a duet with Slovenian Zoran Predin and a song by Bosnian Goran Bregović that encapsulates everything a mother fears most: having to accompany her own child to the grave.

Als markantes Beispiel dafür kann das Boilers Quartet in der Besetzung von Dedic-Križić-Baraković-Levacić gelten, das weltweit für die bekanntesten Jazz-Bühnen der Welt eine Einladung erhielt. Nach ihrem Auftritt in London nahm die »Times« das Quartett in die Liste der besten Jazz-Bands außerhalb Großbritanniens auf.Erst nach dem Tod des Vaters nahm sich der Sohn dessen Werke erstmals an und interpretierte sie auf eine wundervoll emotionale Weise ganz neu. Doch bildet den Abschluss der Gedenkmatinee ein Duett mit dem Slowenen Zoran Predin und einem Lied des Bosniers Goran Bregović, das all jenes beinhaltet, was eine Mutter am meisten fürchtet. Nämlich, dass sie das eigene Kind zum Grab begleiten muss.
