To clear my lungs of the big city air of Sao Paulo, my wife and I decided to spend a few days at the beach. Our destination was the small town of Paraty in the state of Rio de Janeiro in south-eastern Brazil, which I last visited about 25 years ago with my friend, who recently passed away. It was a trip down memory lane, so to speak. We made our first stop on the way to Paraty in a small fishing village called Picinguaba. It belongs to the Ubatuba region and is also popularly known as UbaChuva, which means Uba rain. And that's exactly how we were greeted. Fortunately, the weather changed the next day. We were treated to perfect beach weather for the rest of our stay.
Um meine Lungen von der Grossstadtluft aus Sao Paulo zu reinigen, zogen meine Frau und ich es vor, ein paar Tage am Strand zu verbringen. Ziel war die kleine Stadt Paraty im Staat Rio de Janeiro im Süd-Osten Brasiliens, die ich vor ca. 25 Jahren das letzte Mal zusammen mit meinem, vor kurzem verstorbenen, Freund besucht habe. Es war sozusagen eine Gedächtnistour. Den ersten Zwischenstopp auf dem Weg nach Paraty machten wir in einem kleinen Fischerdorf Namens Picinguaba. Es gehört zur Region Ubatuba und wird im Volksmund auch UbaChuva genant, was soviel wie Uba-Regen heißt. Und genau so wurden wir auch empfangen. Allerdings änderte sich das Wetter glücklicherweise am nächsten Tag. Wir bekamen ein 1A-Strandwetter für den Rest unseres Aufenthaltes serviert.

The village is currently being developed for tourism. There are a few pousadas and a number of small restaurants and snack bars. You can book trips to one of the many islands with the fishermen or, like us, hike to one of the nearest beaches. If you like a quiet beach holiday without noise and hustle and bustle, this is the place for you. Time seems to have stood still here. The people here are open and friendly, and everyone goes to bed by ten o'clock at the latest. As it gets dark here at eight o'clock even in summer and one section of the beach is not lit, light painters will also get their money's worth. So, on our first rainy evening, after a hearty dinner in one of the fish restaurants, we paid a visit to the beach.
Das Dorf wird gerade Touristisch erschlossen. Es gibt einige Pousadas und eine Reihe kleiner Restaurants und Imbissbuden. Man kann bei den Fischern Ausflüge auf eine der vielen Inseln buchen oder so wie wir an einen der nächsten Strände wandern. Wer einen ruhigen Strandurlaub ohne Krach und Hektik mag, ist hier sehr gut aufgehoben. Die Zeit scheint stehen geblieben. Die Menschen hier sind offen und freundlich und spätestens um zehn Uhr Abends geht man hier zu Bett. Da es hier auch im Sommer schon um acht Uhr dunkel ist und ein Strandabschnitt nicht beleuchtet wird, kommt man auch als Light-Painter auf seine Kosten. So statteten wir gleich am ersten, verregneten Abend, nach einem ausgiebigen Dinner in einem der Fischrestaurants dem Strand einen Besuch ab.

Equipped with a camera, tripod, an EMISAR D18, a scanner and (don't forget!) mosquito repellent, I searched the beach for a suitable location for my ‘Christmas card’. Every year, I create light painting greeting cards for Christmas, New Year's Eve and other occasions to send online.
But I had other ideas in mind, and this beach was perfect for them.
The theme was ‘the phantom of the beach’.
Ausgerüstet mit Kamera, Stativ, einer EMISAR D18, einem Scanner und (nicht vergessen!) Mückenspray suchte ich am Strand nach einem geeigneten Standort, für meine „Weihnachtskarte“. Jedes Jahr erstelle ich Light-Painting-Grußkarten zu Weihnachten, Silvester und anderen Anlässen, um sie dann online zu versenden.
Ich hatte aber noch weitere Ideen im Kopf und dieser Strand war ausgezeichnet dafür geeignet.
Das Thema hieß „the phantom of the beach“.

To realise my idea, I needed a rock. Fortunately, there are plenty of them on this beach. The weather rewarded us with absolutely no wind and the clouds disappeared from the sky. Fantastic!
Only the light from a pousada shone on the beach and illuminated the rocks from the side. I chose a rock in the shade for the project.
Um meine Idee umzusetzen, brauchte ich einen Felsen. Davon gibt es an diesem Strand glücklicherweise genügend. Dazu belohnte uns das Wetter noch mit absoluter Windstille und die Wolken verschwanden am Himmel. Phantastisch!
Nur das Licht einer Pousada schien auf den Strand und beleuchtete die Felsen von der Seite. Ich suchte mir für das Projekt einen Felsen im Schatten aus.

My idea was to have my wife Geane emerge from a rock. To do this, I positioned Geane in front of the rock and illuminated her with a scanner. Then I brought the rock into the picture with the help of a torch. Next, I opened the aperture for 10–15 seconds to capture the surroundings in the picture. The result is shown on the cover. It took a few attempts to get the right light balance between the ‘phantom’ and the rock.
I then tried the whole thing on myself as a selfie.
Meine Idee war es, meine Frau Geane aus einem Felsen steigen zu lassen. Dafür platzierte ich Geane vor dem Felsen, beleuchtete sie mit Hilfe eines Scanners. Danach brachte ich den Felsen mit Hilfe der Taschenlampe ins Bild. Dann öffnete ich die Blende für 10 -15 Sekunden, um die Umgebung mit ins Bild zu bringen. Das Ergebnis zeigt das Titelbild. Ein paar Versuche brauchte es doch, um die richtige Licht-Balance zwischen dem „Phantom“ und dem Felsen zu bekommen.
Das Ganze versuchte ich dann an mir selbst als Selfie.
