Light Painting on of these Iconic trees in the National Park
In the past two blog posts I showed you some of what I created when visiting Joshua Tree National Park, but I haven't featured an actual Joshua Tree. But all along, I thought I must also feature at least one of those iconic trees. So here we go.
Also los geht’s.
Challenge 1 - find the right spot for the night.
The best location scouting is of course during the day. We drove around and looked for a representative tree in the right setting. When we came across the Hidden Valley I saw that tree from the street. With the rock formation behind it, I quickly qualified for my later Light Painting on the way out of the National Park.
Challenge 2 - waiting for the sun to set
Patience is not exactly my strong suit. But hey that location was worth it. we found a good spot for a picnic and as soon as we were in full-on blue hour I just started taking test images.
Sunset galore!
Challenge 3 - Setup & Composition
This time I was not exactly on top of my game but I found one angle that was satisfying my vision. after some trial and error, I found a spot to see the rock formation and the tree in a nice complimenting line.
Since I was all alone here, lighting up this location was once again not possible. To come up with complicated installations or concepts was just not in the cards.
This is a relatively short 60-second long single exposure where I stepped to the side and lit the tree for a bit and then also some light to the rock in the background. The camera was set to ISO 100 and the lens to F4 at 24mm focal length.
That was it. simple and quick.
Bonus Image - Camera Rotation
Since the Camera was already on my rotation rig; why not spin it a few times and see what comes of it? Find the right CenterPoint and go again.
In one of the shots a car passed and gave me some extra light effects. After some shots, I knew exactly where to step and run, so I had my path optimized and internalized. That way I got faster and faster. So the shots you see here should actually be twice as long as the first image plus the rotation of the rig. Since I got faster I also ended up with a similar timing. This Light Painting shot is a 64-second long single exposure. I did have to change the lens to my Laowa 12mm F2.8 to get the composition into the frame twice.
See the image below: there is a plane coming from LA flying over the park in both parts of the image. Love it!
Sehr cool!
EXPLAINED
Camera Rotation is what?
As I have shared with you in many of my posts about Camera Rotation. Yes, it is just what the name suggests. The camera is being rotated during the exposure, sometimes in steps sometimes in a continuous motion while doing so I also light up the scene.
Prinzip Kamera Rotation Light Painting?
When you are now interested in this specific niche photography technique, there is an article on my website and here on Hive as a blog post.

The outcome looks great, so well done! Just a little note: I had a look at your engagement and I see there's room for improvement. You're not engaging much, which is a shame as you could get more followers to your blog. I hope you will consider being more active.
Yes, you are absolutely right. If you also see my post frequency went down the past year. The reasons are manifold. In part it's because iam somewhat shy on commenting but more so was the issue of time. I had a bit of a rough work load and a rough patch also privately in the past 2-3 years. That resulted first in less time for content creation (could not collaborate often as i hoped) and then later even more stressful time resulted in me having less time for engaging. I wanted also to put in more time for the @lightpainters community but that's hopefully about to change. Hardest times are now in the past and I want to be more creative and do more artwork and I expect to have more time again for interacting with the community. Thanx for pointing it out so clear. That means a lot to me and shows me that it was all worth while sticking to the hive community. A little hey man you voice is valued feels great. Cheers to the hive and of course you right here. Thanx!
I'm really sorry to hear about you going through some rough times. Unfortunately this happens to all of us, but good thing it's behind you.
I'm sure you'll find some time to drop a comment or two here and there, when you're reading some post. It's not easy to come back, I know, but this is an amazing community and you'll do well. You have no reason to be shy here, trust me :)
Yes, iam super motivated since i see a summer with much more freedom to explore new projects is ahead. And the entire cryptoverse with Hive and all that is calling me.
Thank you so much. Your comments and encouragement are very much appreciated.
Great, great Post and amazing Shots
